SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) ? Expedia Inc. shares rose more than 4% in after-hours trading after the online travel site reported a 10% increase in fourth-quarter earnings and strong growth it its gross booking and hotel room nights.

That was up from a profit of $80.6 million, or 58 cents a share, on sales of $787.1 million in the same period a year ago.
Analysts surveyed by FactSet had forecast Expedia to earn 65 cents a share on $933 million in revenue.
Expedia said that its gross bookings rose 19% from a year ago to $7.5 billion, while hotel-room nights rose by 33% and revenue from hotel sales grew by 25%. Air ticket sales increased by 10% from a year ago.
International sales made up $464 million of Expedia?s total revenue in the quarter, making up 48% of the company?s total quarterly sales.
