Study examines how couples' collaborative dialogue may assist in a spouse's memory
Monday, August 29, 2011Effective memory is a key ability for independent living in later life, and a new Iowa State University study is among the first to report that social partners can help extend memory. The study also found that the collaboration that helps middle-aged couples with memory tasks doesn't seem to be as effective for couples older than 70.
Jennifer Margrett, an assistant professor in human development and family studies, led the study, titled "Examining Collaborative Dialogue Among Couples: A Window Into Prospective Memory Processes." Psychological researchers Celinda Reese-Melancon from Oklahoma State University and Peter Rendell from Australian Catholic University collaborated with Margrett on the study, which was posted online by the Journal of Psychology and will be published in a special issue on prospective memory. They also presented two posters on their results earlier this month at the American Psychological Association conference in Boston, Mass.
The researchers found that spouses do rely on each other as external memory aids. However, the extent to which this strategy is effective depends on how reliable the partner's memory is, and that reliability changes with age for most people.
"In my lab we found that overall, collaboration is usually very helpful on a variety of cognitive tasks, but it's sort of a mixed bag in this recent study, which focuses on memory tasks," Margrett said. "When you think about memory, if I ask you to remember something, you'll get on a roll, think of one thing, and then another thing should come. But if you have a partner who's interrupting you, interjecting, and perhaps leading you down a 'garden path,' that can definitely interfere in memory. So you may have done better on the memory path working alone than you did with a partner.
"For our middle-aged couples in this pilot study, they definitely seemed to fill in the [memory] gaps more effectively than our older couples did," she continued. "So we found that two heads weren't necessarily better than one among the older couples."
The research was conducted on 14 married couples from central Iowa -- three being younger (average age of 35), five being middle-aged (average age of 52) and the other six being older couples (average age of 73).
All participants were asked to complete a variety of prospective memory tasks by playing the board game "Virtual Week," which encourages verbal interaction among players about completing real life tasks. For each virtual "day" in the game, participants were asked to perform 10 different prospective memory tasks -- four that regularly occur (i.e.: taking medication with breakfast), four that were different each day (i.e.: purchasing gasoline for the car), and two being time-check tasks that were not based on the activities of the board game (i.e.: check lung capacity at two specified times).
The researchers video-recorded the spouses playing the game in order to determine whether partners tried to assist each other in completing the task, and the impact that collaboration had on their partner's memory. They found that partners attempted to collaborate on prospective memory tasks, reporting evidence of tutoring, monitoring, encoding and sociability among the couples -- four of the most frequent types of collaborative behaviors.
"We did look at critical statements and demand statements among the couples, and in this sample, they were very low," Margrett said. "If people expressed any sort of socio-emotional type of statements, it was more encouraging of a partner. But from our better to worst comparison of the dyads, the couples who performed at a higher level were more sociable and encouraging."
While this study specifically examined married couples, Margrett says the research may be extended to others who collaborate in prospective memory tasks each day.
"This study had to do with couples, but you interact with co-workers, adult children and others throughout middle and late life. If someone is living in a long-term care facility, they're interacting with caregivers," she said. "And so the idea is to extrapolate our findings to other dyads to see how can we support people within the context of both normal cognitive aging, as well as non-normative cognitive aging -- which includes some memory impairment, and potentially dementia."
The research team has submitted a grant proposal to the National Institutes of Health to replicate the research using a larger sample, with plans to study the couples outside of the lab as they perform real-world tasks.

U.N. deputy secretary general visits Nigeria bomb victims (Reuters)
ABUJA (Reuters) ? United Nations Deputy Secretary-General Asha-Rose Migiro visited the wounded on Sunday from a bomb blast at the U.N. headquarters in Nigeria that killed at least 23 people and injured dozens.
Friday's car bomb blew out windows, gutted a lower floor and set the building alight in one of the most lethal attacks on the world body in its history.
There has been no confirmed claim of responsibility for the attack but security sources suspect the violent Islamist sect Boko Haram, which has been blamed for almost daily bomb and gun attacks on security forces and civilians in the northeast.
A U.N. spokesman accompanying Migiro at the hospital where the victims were being treated said the death toll had risen to 23, from an earlier estimate of 19 given by emergency services.
That would make it more deadly than the truck bomb attack on the U.N. headquarters in Baghdad in 2003 that killed 22 people, including U.N. envoy Sergio Vieira de Mello.
"We are working as a team to ensure that the injured do get all the treatment that they require," Migiro said after visiting the hospital, where she shook hands and patted the backs of the wounded.
"For people who had lost their lives we are working to see how they are going to be put to rest," she said.
Migiro was due to meet later on Sunday President Goodluck Jonathan, who visited the bomb site on Saturday but declined to speculate on who could be behind the attack.
If Boko Haram, whose name means "Western education is sinful" in the northern Hausa language, was responsible, it marks an increase in the sophistication of its attacks and an escalation from local to international targets.
Migiro said the bombing was "a shocking incident, an attack on global peace and communities."
"I have looked at the ripped-up gate. It is amazing how this happened and we are grappling with that, now ... an investigation is under way ... We will see what we have to do better," added Migiro, who was accompanied by U.N. Security Chief Gregory Starr.
Most of the dead were Nigerian, but a Norway official confirmed one of its citizens was also killed. A U.N. official said he expected to be able to release the names and nationalities of the dead later on Sunday.
The car's driver died in the blast, possibly making it Nigeria's first suicide bombing.
The BBC said Boko Haram had contacted it to take responsibility for the attack, but such claims are hard to verify because the sect's command structure is opaque and many people claim to speak on its behalf.
Its activities have usually been confined to the remote northeast, on the threshold of the Sahara desert, where it has killed more than 150 people in bombings and shootings this year, although it claimed a car bomb at police headquarters in Abuja in June.
It says it wants Sharia law more widely applied in Nigeria, beyond the mostly Muslim north where some states have it, but until Friday had shown no interest in hitting Western targets.
Intelligence officials say they have evidence that some Boko Haram members have trained in Niger and have made contact with al Qaeda's North African wing, which may explain the move.
Jonathan tightened security after the attack and armed soldiers patrolled Abuja, searching cars at roadblocks across the city, which lies in the middle of the country where the mostly-Christian south and largely-Muslim north meet.
Security experts say many of Boko Haram's attacks are done by disillusioned youths, in a region that has much higher illiteracy, poverty and unemployment rates than the south.
A security source on Saturday told Reuters he suspects there may also be a political dimension to its growing attacks, suggesting they are being co-opted by northern politicians angry about Jonathan, a Christian southerner, winning April's poll.

My brother and I grew up son of a Hospice nurse.
From a very young age, conversation around the idea of death and dying was always present in our home. For mom, it wasn?t simply a profession. Helping families and?patients find peace in their final hours together was part passion, and part mission and part of her life.
I think that had an effect on us. Last week, Nick and I talked about a new research project he?s thinking about working on around the idea of the?digital?self (the sense of self we create by putting lots of stuff online) and death.
(OMG, he said the ?d? word.)
It?s an interesting question to think about, though.
Have you ever stopped long enough to think about what happens to your Facebook profile or Blog or LinkedIn network when you finally pass away?
Plenty of time
Most of us default here.
?Meh, I?ve got plenty of time. I?m young and healthy, and I?m not planning to die anytime soon?, we say?confidently with a slight touch of fear, uncertainty and doubt buried deep in our?subconscious.?
The truth is this ? no one actually knows.?Life can be long or short, and the term life insurance industry exists for a reason. But we rarely think about all of that when we log onto Facebook or Google plus to talk with our friends.
Thinking About Bob
In ?early 2007, I was hired as a marketing manager for a technology company called BestTransport. Bob Parsley was the Vice?President?of ?marketing who brought me in.
I remember really liking Bob in the interview. He was a runner, a passionate family guy, and he?d been in the internet game for a ton of years, going all the way back to his time working with AOL. He had always had a passion for being a firefighter, and it was Bob that first introduced me to Burning Man, a really neat festival that happen out west.
Bob was also one hell of a marketer. He quickly became one of my first mentors, teaching me to live the art of white-boarding in strategy, how to build phased plans and how to pitch the ideas to the higher ups. It was Bob who first introduced me to the idea of blogging for a company and using a tool like Exact Target to build and manage drip email campaigns.
He was hands down one of the best dude?s I?ve ever worked for, thus the recommendation on his LinkedIn profile. ?He moved to Resource Interactive after Best fell apart.
After BestTransport, we all moved on to different positions in different?companies. I went to work with Young Isaac, and Bob landed an executive director position at Resource Interactive. It was a great fit for him, and we kept in touch from time to time using LinkedIn and Facebook to chat.
It was last year at a Christmas party, that when I learned why Bob?s replies to my LinkedIn messages had completely?disappeared?over the last 6 months. I had been talking with one of his associates at Resource and asked:
?Do you work closely with Bob Parsley? He was a mentor of mine and I haven?t heard from him in a while.?
His face dropped?immediately.
?Oh ? you haven?t you heard yet.?
After a few months of working in the new gig, Bob learned that he suffered from?Glioblastoma, a fairly rare and extremely agressive?brain tumor. He had passed away last year at his home in the care of hospice, leaving behind?a wife, three children, and a lots of friends and family.

On LinkedIn last week, I somehow stumbled across Bob?s profile in my search results.
I stopped for a moment and then clicked through.
I honestly am ?not sure why I did. I?ve known that Bob was gone for some time now. And to make things even stranger, we we?re close friends or families. I had the?privilege?of working?with?Bob for about a year and learned so much from him. I respected him, and we talked online ? but we we?re what I could consider to be close?friends.
Still, I?clicked?through and there he was. I read through his career accomplishments, looked at his profile photo and started to remember some of the meetings and projects and lunches that we shared. His profile still contains his email address and cell phone number, and I have to admit that for a brief moment, I thought about sending a message and even calling the number to see if it was the same message.
The Question
The question again is this: What happens to our digital self once our human flesh self is gone. The story above is a special case, and it?s everyones hope that a tragedy like above does not happen to us, or to our loved ones.
But, take into consideration that Pew Research study has found that between April 2009 and May 2010, social networking use among internet users ages 50-64 grew by 88%. Moreover,?during the same period, use among those ages 65 and older grew 100%.
As older generations move online, conversation around this topic must happen. We must face this eventually. And, I think there?s some good that can come out of this too. Stick around on tomorrow post for another example of how keeping the integrity of the digital self after the human has passed on can help those left behind to find closure.

Christina Aguilera is considering launching a legal spat with the bosses of a news website after they suggested she had abused her son.
A photo of the singer's son Max sporting what looked like a black eye was posted online on Wednesday, and MediaTakeOut.com implied Aguilera was responsible for the injury. (Click here for a photo.)
Editors published the photo under the headline, 'CHILD ABUSE???? CHRISTINA AGUILERA'S SON IS PHOTO'D WITH A BLACK EYE!!!'
The claim has upset Aguilera and her attorney, Eric Greenspan, has fired off a letter to MediaTakeOut.com's bosses, stating, "Christina is a wonderful mother and was not present in the park when Max fell and hurt himself.
"To imply that she had something to do with this incident, without any investigation on your part whatsoever, is reckless and unconscionable."
According to TMZ.com, Greenspan has threatened to pursue legal action.
The website has removed the reference to child abuse from the story.
Sources close to Aguilera claim little Max was injured when he fell while playing in a park.

Anyone who has read just a couple of my articles will have guessed correctly that my childhood wasn?t one big extended hug filled demonstrative love fest. I really don?t feel that I missed anything.
It should cause no surprise, then, that the only way for a neighborhood stray to make the jump to included family pet was to survive the plastic bag exhaust pipe fest (my sister insists that the same went for all of us siblings).
Sure, the cat would continue to give my dad dirty looks, but in the end they all proved to be very loyal pets. You can be sure the cat doesn?t waste time acting aloof if you have experienced it coming to you when called.
Perhaps that is why I was so shocked when I encountered my first pet as life partner surrogate. It really must be a big city thing.
I don?t know if Vancouver is typical of other, larger, urban centers, but here it seems that the size and number of pets actually increases the closer one gets to the city center. There seems to be a direct inverse size to available practical space ratio in effect.

Twelve years ago I found myself unceremoniously ousted from a perfectly feasible part-time working relationship by the simple act of lifting a cat from my lap and dropping it feet first twelve inches down on the carpeted floor. In retrospect, if it was a real canary in a coal mine moment (I guess for all three of us) and I know that I got off lucky.

Cross Cultural Negotiations
Cross cultural negotiation is one of many specialized areas within the wider field of cross cultural communications. By taking cross cultural negotiation training, negotiators and sales personnel give themselves an advantage over competitors.
There is an argument that proposes that culture is inconsequential to cross cultural negotiation. It maintains that as long as a proposal is financially attractive it will succeed. However, this is a na?ve way of approaching international business.
Let us look at a brief example of how cross cultural negotiation training can benefit the international business person:
There are two negotiators dealing with the same potential client in the Middle East. Both have identical proposals and packages. One ignores the importance of cross cultural negotiation training believing the proposal will speak for itself. The committed itself to the other cross-cultural training. He / she learns the culture, values, beliefs, etiquette and approaches to business meetings and negotiations. Nine out of ten cases on the second successful rivals.
This is because 1) it is likely that there would be more costly to the host negotiation team and 2) that would be able to adapt their approach to negotiations in order to maximize the potential for a positive result.
> Cross-cultural negotiations is more to do business as a foreigner. It addresses all factors that can influence the process. By highlighting this, should some examples of topics that may be offered short cross cultural negotiation training covered.
Eye contact: In the U.S., Britain and much of northern Europe, consult widely, to give direct eye contact, trust and sincerity. In South America, is a sign of reliability. But in someCultures, such as Japanese, prolonged eye contact is considered rude and is generally avoided.
Personal Space & Touch: In Europe and North America, business people usually leave a certain distance when interacting with each other. Touching only takes place between friends. In South America or the Middle East, are businessmen, tactile and like to follow more closely. In Japan or China, it is not uncommon for people to leave a space of four feet when the interview. Touchingonly takes place between close friends and family members.
Time: Western societies are very ?clock conscious?. Time is money and punctuality is crucial. This is also the case in countries such as Japan or China where being late would be taken as an insult. However, in South America, southern Europe and the Middle East, being on time for a meeting does not carry the same sense of urgency.
Meeting & Greeting: most international business people meet with a handshake. In some Countries this is not appropriate between genders. Some may see a weak handshake as a sign of weakness, while others perceive a firm handshake as aggressive. How should people be addressed? And 'by name, first name or title? Talk is part of the procedure or not?
Gifts: Gifts in Japan and China is an integral part of business protocol however in the United States or Great Britain, has a negative connotation. Where gifts are exchanged should generous gift? They are alwaysreciprocated? Should they be wrapped? Are there numbers or colours that should be avoided?
All the above in one way or another will impact cross cultural negotiation and can only be learnt through cross cultural training. Doing or saying the wrong thing at the wrong time, poor communication and cross cultural misunderstandings can all have harmful consequences.
Cross cultural negotiation training builds its foundations Labels on understanding and approaches to business abroad before focusing on cross-cultural differences in negotiation styles and techniques.
There are three interconnected aspects that need to be considered before entering into cross-cultural negotiations.
The basis of the relationship: in most countries in Europe and North America's business is contractual in nature Personal relationships are seen as unhealthy as they can cloud.Lead to complications, and objectivity. In South America and large parts of Asia, the business is personal. Partnerships, to only those who know, to be made, trust and feel comfortable. It must be in relationship building before investing business.
Information at Negotiations: Western business culture places emphasis on clearly presented and rationally argued business proposals using statistics and facts. Different cultures rely on similarInformation but with differences. For example, visual and oral communicators such as the South Americans prefer information via voice and with maps, graphs and tables.
Styles of negotiation: the way we approach negotiation differs across cultures. For example, in the Middle East rather than approaching topics sequentially negotiators may discuss issues simultaneously.
South Americans can be very vocal and animated. The Japanese will negotiate in teamsand decisions are to govern by consensus. In Asia, the decisions usually by the most senior figure or head of a family are made. In China, negotiators are highly trained in the art to obtain concessions. In Germany, decisions can take a long time because of the need to analyze information and statistics in great depth. In the UK, pressure tactics and setting a deadline because of the closing prices, while in Greece this would backfire.
Of course there are many factors to beas in the approach to intercultural negotiations. Through cross-cultural negotiation training, business personnel have the relevant knowledge, given the effective in preparing their presentations and sales calls. Adapting your behavior and the way you approach the negotiation you can maximize your potential.

Reached for comment, Jada's rep told TMZ: "What? In Touch said that? I know nothing about this ... Lord. I'm going back to bed."
Will Smith, of course, is one of the strongest box office draws of all-time, although he's been more focused in recent years on the success of his children. Jaden established himself as a certified movie star in a remake of The Karate Kid, while Willow has whipped her to stardom.

BRUSSELS (AP) ? NATO said Tuesday the situation in the Libyan capital of Tripoli remains very dangerous and the alliance will continue its operations over the country, bombing forces loyal to Moammar Gadhafi if they keep fighting.
But spokesman Col. Roland Lavoie told reporters that pro-Gadhafi forces are severely degraded and losing strength through desertions and defections.
"Our military mission has not changed. It remains to protect the civilian population, enforce the no-fly zone and the arms embargo," he said. "We will conduct strikes wherever necessary to protect the population of Libya."
The U.N. Security Council has imposed sanctions on Libya and authorized military action to protect civilians caught in conflict.
Lavoie spoke at a news conference in Naples, Italy, also taking questions from reporters at NATO headquarters in Brussels by video link.
"The situation in Tripoli is still very serious and very dangerous," Lavoie said. "Snipers, shelling, missiles could do much damage, but they can't change the course of history or the outcome of this campaign."
In Brussels, NATO spokeswoman Oana Lungescu said NATO might play a role in Libya in the post-Gadhafi period.
"NATO is willing to help in a supporting role if needed and if requested," Lungescu said.
She said the alliance had gained much experience in security sector reforms in Eastern Europe during the post-Communist period. "One can put that experience at the disposal of Libya and other regional countries, if requested and if needed."
Earlier, France's foreign minister said he hoped NATO's air operation over Libya would end "as soon as possible" ? once rebel fighters topple Gadhafi and his forces for good. Alain Juppe said France and Britain were responsible for about 75 to 80 percent of NATO air operations over Libya in recent months.
But, Turkey's Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu, speaking during a visit to the rebel stronghold of Benghazi, said air operations would continue until security in the country is fully restored.
"What is important is that Libya's territorial integrity be secured," Turkey's Anatolia news agency quoted Davutoglu as saying in reference to the alliance's air campaign in Libya.
A U.S.-led coalition launched the first air strikes against Libya on March 19. At the end of that month, NATO assumed command of the operation. Alliance warplanes have flown nearly 20,000 flights since then, and carried out 7,500 strike sorties.
The alliance says it has destroyed more than 800 of Gadhafi's tanks, armored vehicles and artillery pieces.
Rebels and pro-regime troops were fighting street battles in several parts of Tripoli, a day after opposition fighters swept into the capital with relative ease, claiming to have most of it under their control.
Lungescu played down the importance of Gadhafi's son's unexpected appearance at a Tripoli hotel, after the rebels claimed he had been captured.
"A brief appearance in the dead of night doesn't indicate somebody in control of the capital or anything at all," she said. "It shows that they are on the run (and) as we've seen in the Balkans recently, those on the run from international justice can do so for some time, but they can't hide."
