Networking creates devices buzz at mobile fair

BARCELONA (Reuters) - Networks, whether superfast mobile broadband, wifi or a combination of both, are helping add pizzazz to new mobile products as the rapid evolution in smartphone and tablet design slows to a trickle.

The world's fastest smartphone, new "phablets" - sized between a phone and tablet - and small tablets optimized to watch video and run multiple applications on 4G mobile networks were making the biggest splash at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.

Networks are also enabling millions of other devices, from coffee makers to bicycles and cars to homes, to become "smart".

Chipmaker Qualcomm Inc for instance demonstrated a connected home in which a smartphonecoffee can be used to start a coffer maker and speakers burst into sound when you enter the room, thanks to the handset in your pocket.

Such innovations are made possible by AllJoyn, an open-source software framework compatible with mobile operating systems Android, Windows and iOs, that allows devices to speak to each other directly without needing a separate server.

"We are making the Internet of everything a seamless blend of the physical and the digital world," said Brian Spencer, engineer at Qualcomm Innovation Center.

U.S. network operator AT&T Inc, meanwhile, is adding your home and your car to your smartphone contacts.

Its Digital Life product allows a user to automate and monitor his or her home remotely, and it has replaced Verizon Communications Inc as mobile partner for General Motors Co's OnStar connected car service.

Glenn Lurie, AT&T president of emerging enterprises, said the next step would be joining the two products together, creating a smart ecosystem dedicated to an individual.

"When my wife drives into the house and flips the garage door open, the house will know she's home and unlock the door and turns the thermostat up; that's the future," Lurie said.

NEXT BIG THING

Meanwhile wearable devices are the next big thing to be connected, industry watchers say. Google Inc revealed on YouTube last week some of the features of Google Glass, a pair of glasses that allows users to see information and record video.

Apple Inc, meanwhile, is experimenting with the design of a smart device similar to a wristwatch made with curved glass, according to a New York Times report.

In Barcelona, many of the wearables were designed to keep tabs on health problems.

A blood sugar monitor was being used by cyclists, with real-time data sent to a Sony Corp Xperia smartphone on the handlebars. Readings can then be sent to doctors using a secure mobile connection.

It will be used by a team of diabetics riding between Brussels and Barcelona next month, said trip organizer Adam Denton.

Most new smartphones and tablets unveiled at the show, however, displayed no departure from the touch-screen format popularized by Apple and Samsung Electronics Co Ltd.

Device maker Huawei set itself apart by emphasizing the connection speed of its flagship smartphone, the Ascend P2, while Japan's NEC Corp took a fresh approach to smartphone form with a device offering screens back and front that can be unfolded to make a 5.6 inch-sized tablet.

Olaf Swantee, chief executive of British network operator EE, said faster networks were changing how people use their devices and how manufacturers were designing kit.

"Miniaturization was the big thing a few years ago, but now, with customers able to do more on their screens than ever before, we're seeing device manufacturers maximize screen space, not minimize it," he said at the show.

James scores 26, Heat beat Bulls 86-67

CHICAGO (AP) ? LeBron James scored 26 points and grabbed 12 rebounds, and the Miami Heat beat the Chicago Bulls 86-67 Thursday for their season-high ninth straight win.

James also had seven assists in another big performance after ending his franchise-record seven-game streak of scoring at least 30 the previous night in Atlanta.

Dwyane Wade added 17 points, and the Heat took control in the first half, sending the Bulls to their fifth loss in seven games on a night when the Derrick Rose recovery story took another twist.

After saying last week that he wouldn't rush back from his knee injury to play this season if he wasn't ready, Chicago's sidelined superstar had to go into damage control mode after his older brother Reggie blasted the organization in an ESPNChicago.com article for not making a move before Thursday's trade deadline.

Things didn't get much better for the Bulls once the game started.

Nate Robinson scored 14 points, Carlos Boozer had 12 points and 11 rebounds and Joakim Noah added 11 points, eight rebounds and eight assists, but he also committed four of the Bulls' season-high 27 turnovers.

Chicago was particularly bad in the first half, coughing it up 17 times as the Heat built a 45-35 lead, and the Bulls came up short after winning at Miami last month. This time, the Heat took control in the second quarter, scoring 13 straight points during a 4 1/2-minute stretch to turn a two-point deficit into an 11-point advantage even though James was on the bench for much of the run.

It started after a soaring right-handed dunk by Taj Gibson to give Chicago a 28-26 lead with 8:16 remaining. Allen answered with a driving layup, Wade followed with two jumpers and the Bulls turned it over five times as the Heat built a 39-28 lead.

Marco Belinelli ended the scoring drought for Chicago with a free throw, and Boozer then nailed a jumper after Bosh buried a 20-footer. But it was a rough night all around for Chicago, even before the Bulls took to the court.

Rose, recovering from a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee, found himself at the center of attention after his brother went off, and he wound up releasing this statement in response: "I have always felt that the Bulls organization's goals have been the same as mine and that is to bring another championship to this city."

That comment came after Reggie Rose ripped the Bulls, telling ESPNChicago.com they don't have the talent to compete for a championship and that their decision to stand pat before the trade deadline could be a "big factor" in whether Derrick plays at all this season.

"It's frustrating to see my brother play his heart and soul out for the team and them not put anything around him," said Reggie Rose, Derrick's manager.

NOTES: Bulls G Kirk Hinrich sat out because of soreness in his right elbow. The veteran Hinrich missed seven games with an infection in the elbow before delivering 10 assists Tuesday in a win at New Orleans. The Bulls visit Charlotte on Friday, and Thibodeau expects him to make the trip. ... The Heat traded backup center Dexter Pittman and a second-round pick in this year's draft to the Grizzlies on Thursday for the rights to center Ricky Sanchez. ... Mike Miller remained in Miami because of ear problems resulting from a head cold. He also missed Wednesday's game at Atlanta but could be available in Saturday at Philadelphia.

Sony: PSN games won't transfer to the PS4, nor will your game saves

It's the morning after the night before, and Sony Worldwide Studios president Shuhei Yoshida has just confirmed to us that current-generation PSN titles won't transfer across to the PlayStation 4. The company admitted last night that PS3 games wouldn't be compatible with the latest console, but has added that it will try to make titles playable "in some form." Because the architecture of the Power-PC-based PS3 and x86-based PlayStation 4 are so different, Sony will only bring across games that don't guzzle the latest console's power in emulation. The executive also said that the company aims to offer server-side and cloud services to offer a wider library of older games, but said that's one for the "longer term."

Obama reaches out to GOP as budget cuts loom

Larry Downing / REUTERS

U.S. President Barack Obama discusses the automatic budget cuts scheduled to take effect next week, while in the South Court Auditorium in the Eisenhower Executive Office Building in the White House complex in Washington February 19, 2013.

By Andrew Rafferty, Staff Writer, NBC News

President Barack Obama reached out to the Republican leaders of the House and Senate on Thursday, the first sign in weeks that the two sides could be willing to work on a bipartisan solution to the potentially devastating spending cuts set to take place March 1.

White House spokesman Jay Carney announced the president had reached out to Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell and House Speaker John Boehner to address the automatic $85 billion in cuts set to kick in next month. Carney described the calls as ?good conversations? but provided no more details.

McConnell?s office said it was the first time Obama has reached out since New Year?s Eve when Congress struggled to come to an agreement on the across-the-board spending cuts known as the ?fiscal cliff.?

And while there was no official readout of the meetings, sniping on Twitter between Carney and Boehner Press Secretary Brenden Buck may be an indication that both sides have a ways to go.

Carney tweeted at Buck a USA Today/Pew poll showing American support for the president?s deficit reduction plan, ending his post with the hashtag ?GOPoutOFTouch?? ?

Buck mockingly tweeted back, ?What do you say we show up here every afternoon, say 4:00ish? Talk it out??

And both parties are still accusing the other of not wanting to come to the table to negotiate. During an appearance on Al Sharpton?s radio show on Thursday, President Obama remarked, "At this point, we continue to reach out to Republicans and say this is not going to be good for the economy, it's not going to be good for ordinary people."

"But I don't know if they're going to move and that's what we're going to have to keep pushing over the next seven, eight days," he told Sharpton, who also hosts a show on MSNBC.

Obama will keep pushing by continuing to take his case to the American people next week. On Tuesday he?ll visit Newport News, Va., an area where the automatic spending cuts, known as sequestration, would hit hard. ?

Carney said the president plans to ?highlight the fact that there will be real-world impacts to the implementation of the sequester ? if Republicans choose to allow that to happen.?

Republicans have tried waging a public campaign of their own trying to place the onus on the president, especially when it comes to national defense. And Pentagon officials from Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta down have warned that sequestration could severely inhibit national defense, a responsibility that would rest on the head of the nation?s military.

?As the commander-in-chief, President Obama is ultimately responsible for our military readiness, so it?s fair to ask: what is he doing to stop his sequester that would ?hollow out? our Armed Forces?? Boehner said on Wednesday.

On Thursday, Carney said the president does feel responsible but rejects what he described as Republicans' ?my way or the highway? approach to negotiating.

"My sense is that their basic view is that nothing is important enough to raise taxes on wealthy individuals or corporations and they would prefer to see these kinds of cuts that could slow down our recovery over closing tax loopholes," Obama told Sharpton. "That's the thing that binds their party together at this point." ?

Apple supplier Foxconn freezes hiring at largest plant

TAIPEI/NEW YORK (Reuters) - Apple Inc's manufacturing partner Foxconn Technology Group has frozen hiring at a Shenzhen plant that makes gadgets including the iPhone 5 and put the brakes on recruiting for other factories across China, but said the move was not linked to any single client.

Foxconn, which runs a network of factories across the world's No. 2 economy that make products for tech companies from Hewlett Packard to Dell, sought to pour cold water on a Financial Times report that it had imposed a hiring freeze while it slows production of Apple's latest smartphone.

"Due to an unprecedented rate of return of employees following the Chinese New Year holiday compared to years past, our company has decided to temporarily slow down our recruitment process," the company said in a statement.

"This action is not related to any single customer and any speculation to the contrary is false and inaccurate."

Like other Chinese contract manufacturers, Foxconn relies on a large number of migrant laborers from across the country, who journey home for the most important holiday of the year. Many do not make it back to work, but Foxconn spokesman Louis Woo said this year they saw as many as 97 percent of employees return.

Apple sold a less-than-expected 47.8 million iPhones in the 2012 holiday quarter, fanning fears that its dominance of consumer electronics is on the decline as Samsung Electronics Co and other manufacturers that use Google Inc's Android software gradually gain market share.

The iPhone is Apple's most important product, accounting for half its revenue. The company's shares slipped almost 2 pct on Wednesday to $451, and are down about 34 percent from their September peak above $700, as investors fret about sliding margins and intensifying competition.

IMPLICATIONS FOR APPLE

Apple watchers often take cues from its component suppliers and manufacturing partners. In January, CEO Tim Cook took the unusual step of warning investors that it is difficult to extrapolate from limited "data points".

RBC estimates that just 70 to 80 percent of Chinese workers return to factories it tracks.

"This year we believe the return rates have been closer to 90 percent, which may minimize the need to hire," RBC analyst Amit Daryanani wrote in a Wednesday research note.

"Given the timing of the freeze, it may have more to do with higher return rates of employees versus what was expected by Foxconn and other supply chain companies."

Foxconn's latest statement contradicts another Foxconn spokesman, Liu Kun, who is cited in the newspaper on Wednesday as saying, "Currently, none of the plants in mainland China have hiring plans."

A check on Foxconn's recruitment website on Wednesday showed the company's Taiyuan and Hangzhou plants were hiring. But its factory complex in the southern city of Shenzhen is its single largest production base.

The Shenzhen plant "is not hiring at the moment because workers' return rate after Chinese New Year is very high this year, reaching 97 pct", Woo said.

"We replenish each year depending on the return rate."

Horses don't get stage fright -- but their riders do

Feb. 19, 2013 ? It is well known that horses show symptoms of stress when ridden but relatively little attention has been paid to the effects on their riders. This is surprising, as equestrian sports rely on the close cooperation between the animals and their riders. How does the horse-rider team cope with the stress involved in competing in an equestrian event?

The issue has now been studied by Mareike von Lewinski in the group of Christine Aurich at the University of Veterinary Medicine, Vienna (Vetmeduni Vienna), together with colleagues at the Vetmeduni Vienna and at the Ecole Nationale d'Equitation in Saumur, France. The scientists measured the changes in various stress-related parameters, such as the level of stress hormones in saliva and the regularity of the pulse, in horses and their riders when the animals were ridden in a particular show programme. The measurements were taken both when the presentation was completed in front of about a thousand spectators and when the riders practised beforehand without any spectators. The results were compared to assess how the riders and their mounts responded to the presence of the audience.

In line with previous experiments, the researchers could observe symptoms of stress -- higher cortisol concentrations in the saliva and more irregular heartbeats -- both in horses and in their riders during the study. Furthermore, the riders showed significantly higher levels of stress when an audience was present, confirming what was suspected: participation in equestrian events is associated with stage fright, even in experienced riders. There are many reasons why riders might be more stressed when performing in front of an audience than when they are practising for an event -- as Aurich says, "they are only human, after all." In contrast, the horses appeared not to be affected by the presence of spectators: their reaction to the course was essentially independent of whether an audience was present or not. In other words, the horses and their riders respond differently to the challenges posed by performing for spectators, with the horses not suffering from the increased levels of stress shown by their riders.

The results imply that the riders do not communicate their heightened anxiety to the animals. The lack of transfer of emotions between rider and horse was completely unexpected. Aurich concedes that "we started with the assumption that the rider's stress would affect his horse but this does not seem to be the case. Nevertheless, we should bear in mind that we were working with experienced horses and highly skilled riders: our findings cannot be generalized to inexperienced riders, who might be less able to prevent their horses from being stressed by the situation."

A Banksy mural, lost in London, is found in Miami

North Londoners are furious over a missing Banksy mural that was torn off a building in the Wood Green neighborhood of the city and has since resurfaced online at Fine Art Auctions Miami.

The high-profile mural by the mysterious street artist, no stranger to publicity stunts, depicts a boy on his knees, hunched over a sewing machine and stitching Union Jack bunting. It went up last May on the wall of a Poundland department store in advance of June's Diamond Jubilee Celebration for Queen Elizabeth II, and according to the Guardian newspaper, it's considered a commentary on child labor.

The mural was a popular draw to the neighborhood, attracting locals and tourists alike. It is now titled "Banksy Slave Labor (Bunting Boy). London 2012" on the auction site, and listed for $500,000 to $700,000.

According to the auction house, which specializes in "important Russian, Impressionist, Modern and Contemporary works," the mural was put up for sale by a known collector, who Fine Art Auctions Miami owner Frederic Thut declined to name.

"The collector signed a contract saying everything was aboveboard," Thut told the Sun. Thut was "not available" for further comment, a harried auction-house associate said Tuesday afternoon, when several calls yielded a busy signal.

"Banksy Slave Labor" is one of two pieces by the artist seen in the catalog for an auction scheduled for Saturday, along with "Wet Dog," painted in Bethlehem and valued at $600,000 to $800,000.

Interest in "Banksy Slave Labor" was such that the auction house created a "blanket statement" for all media inquiries: "FAAM has done all the necessary due diligence to ensure the ownership of the work," it reads. "Unfortunately, we are not able to provide you with any information by law and contract about any details of any consignment. However, we are more than happy to do that if you can prove that the works were acquired and removed illegally."

"Wet Dog" was among five privately owned six-ton wall reliefs included in the CONTEXT Art Miami exhibit "Banksy: Out of Context" at Art Basel 2012. The catalog for that show acknowledged that showing site-specific street art outside of its original environment is "a very divisive issue within the art community."

Alan Strickland, a London councilman, urged his Twitter followers to email the auctioneers in protest. He tweeted: "Pls RT. Save our Banksy from sale. Let's all email art company auctioning it on info@faamiami.com. Tell them to withdraw it from auction."

In an interview with the BBC, Strickland said residents of the neighborhood are "shocked and really astonished."

"Banksy gave that piece of art to our community, and people came from all over London to see it," Strickland said.

Additional reporting by Ben Crandell.

Hunt for distant planets intensifies

Feb. 18, 2013 ? When astronomers discovered planet GJ 1214b circling a star more than 47 light-years from Earth in 2009, their data presented two possibilities. Either it was a mini-Neptune shrouded in a thick atmosphere of hydrogen and helium, or it was a water world nearly three times the size of Earth.

Along came Jacob Bean, now an assistant professor in astronomy & astrophysics at the University of Chicago, who used a new method called multi-object spectroscopy to analyze the planet?s atmosphere from large, ground-based telescopes. Aided by technology, Bean and his colleagues are surmounting the challenge of inferring the atmospheric composition of planets that were invisible to humans just a few years ago.

?We?re trying to distinguish whether it?s like the gas giants we know about, or something fundamentally different from what we?ve seen in our solar system ? an atmosphere predominantly composed of water,? Bean said.

The search for exoplanets - planets beyond our own solar system - has taken off over the last decade, and is now a growing component of UChicago?s research agenda in astronomy. One estimate published in January calculated that our Milky Way galaxy alone contains at least 17 billion Earth-sized planets, with a vast potential for life-sustaining worlds. Pursuing the exoplanet search via complementary methods are Bean and Daniel Fabrycky, another assistant professor in astronomy & astrophysics.

Bean has received a 60-orbit allocation on the Hubble Space Telescope to continue his observations on GJ 1214b, a sign of the work?s importance. Previous HST studies of planetary atmospheres encompassed 10 to 20 orbits. Bean will use a technique called transmission spectroscopy to measure the chemical composition of the planet?s atmosphere with unprecedented precision.

A big prize

A definitive assessment of the planet?s atmosphere could lead to a larger prize: learning how to detect potential signs of alien life on a cosmically distant Earth twin. The atmospheric signature of life on an exoplanet presumably would contain some mixture of oxygen and various other gases.

Planetary scientists are conducting theoretical studies to narrow the range of possibilities.

?It?s interesting to note that all the instruments astronomers have used to study exoplanet atmospheres so far were never designed for that,? Bean said. ?We?re using them in very unusual ways. We do what we can with what we have.?

But now Bean aims to build a system that is perfectly suited and well optimized to study exoplanet atmospheres, including that of GJ 1214b.

?The current data suggest an atmosphere predominately composed of water, but it?s not a definitive result yet,? Bean said. ?There could be even more exotic scenarios possible that we?re not able to rule out.?

If GJ 1214b is a water world, ?It would be very different than anything in our own solar system,? said Harvard University astronomy Professor David Charbonneau, whose team discovered the planet.

Deep questions

The search taps into some of modern science?s deepest questions: Are humans alone in the cosmos, and is our life-sustaining world unique? One of the earliest writers to speculate about exoplanets was the Italian philosopher and scientist Giordano Bruno, who was burned at the stake in 1600 for espousing beliefs that the Catholic Church deemed heretical.

In one prescient passage, Bruno wrote, ?In space there are countless constellations, suns and planets; we see only the suns because they give light; the planets remain invisible, for they are small and dark. There are also numberless earths circling around their suns, no worse and no less than this globe of ours.?

Discoveries of new exoplanets have flowed like oil from a gushing wellhead in recent years. The number has topped 850 and continues to climb.

Starting in the 1990s, exoplanet hunters initially were only able to find giant, Jupiter-like gas planets because they were bigger and thus easier to find. ?They were closer to their stars than Jupiter is from the sun, so we nicknamed them ?hot Jupiters,?? Charbonneau said.

But in recent years, scientists began pursuing a new, more interesting goal: find planets that are more Earthlike. One major push along that front was the $600-million Kepler mission, launched in 2009. This mission, encompassing a 100-member science team, is conducting a survey of planets orbiting other sun-like stars.

?Kepler is on the cusp of finding small planets in the habitable zone around both sun-like and small stars,? Fabrycky said. ?This is the goal of the mission, and it?s almost there.?

A Kepler research veteran, Fabrycky began his UChicago faculty appointment last October. Fabrycky precisely measures the timing of transits, the mini eclipses that planets cause as they pass in front of their stars. Timing inconsistencies in the transits often result from the gravitational influence of other planets.

So far Kepler has 105 confirmed planet discoveries to its credit, and has identified 2,740 planet candidates. As a postdoctoral scientist at the University of California, Santa Cruz, two years ago, Fabrycky was a member of a team that discovered six planets orbiting a single star called Kepler-11. ?Kepler-11 is hanging on ? for the moment ? as the one with the most number of planet signals? among exoplanetary systems, Fabrycky said.

Bean and his colleagues have made the best observations of planetary atmospheres so far using the Hubble Telescope, the Spitzer Space Telescope, and, in Chile, the Very Large Telescope array and the twin Magellan Telescopes. But the planned Giant Magellan Telescope, of which UChicago is a founding partner, and the forthcoming James Webb Space Telescope should eclipse the capabilities of today?s observatories when they go into service late this decade.

The new telescopes will be able to do the same sort of exoplanetary atmospheric studies underway now, ?but actually do it for the smaller planets that might even be habitable,? Charbonneau said.

Microsoft's Outlook takes aim at Google's Gmail

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ? Microsoft is so confident it has the Internet's best email service that it's about spend at least $30 million to send its message across the U.S.

The barrage begins Tuesday when Microsoft's twist on email, Outlook.com, escalates an assault on rival services from Google Inc., Yahoo Inc., AOL Inc. and a long list of Internet service providers.

As part of the process, all users of Microsoft's Hotmail and other email services operating under different domains such as MSN.com will be automatically converted to Outlook.com by the summer, if they don't voluntarily switch before then. All the old messages, contacts and settings in the old inboxes will be exported to Outlook.com. Users will also be able to keep their old addresses.

Email remains a key battleground, even at a time when more people are texting each other on phones.

People still regularly check their inboxes, albeit increasingly on their smartphones. The recurring email habit provides Internet companies a way to keep people coming back to websites. It gives people a reason to log in during their visits so it's easier for email providers to track their activities. Frequent visits and personal identification are two of the keys to selling ads, the main way most websites make money.

That's why Microsoft, Google and Yahoo have been retooling their email services in recent months.

After keeping Outlook.com in a "preview" phase since July 31, Microsoft Corp. is ready to accept all comers.

To welcome new users, Microsoft is financing what it believes to be the biggest marketing blitz in the history of email. Outlook.com will be featured in ads running on primetime TV, radio stations, websites, billboards and buses. Microsoft expects to spend somewhere between $30 million to $90 million on the Outlook campaign, which will run for at least three months.

The Outlook ads will overlap with an anti-Gmail marketing campaign that Microsoft launched earlier this month. The "Scroogled" attacks depict Gmail as a snoopy service that scans the contents of messages to deliver ads related to topics being discussed.

The Gmail ads are meant to be educational while the Outlook campaign is motivational, said Dharmesh Mehta, Outlook.com's senior director.

"We are trying to push people who have gotten lazy and comfortable with an email service that may not be all that great and help show them what email can really do for them," said Mehta.

By Microsoft's own admission, Hotmail had lost the competitive edge that once made it the world's largest email service. The lack of innovation left an opening for Google to exploit when it unveiled Gmail nearly nine years ago.

Gmail is now the industry leader, although estimates on its popularity vary.

Google says Gmail has more than 425 million accountholders, including those that only visit on smartphones and other mobile device. The latest data from research firm comScore, which doesn't include mobile traffic, shows Gmail with 306 million worldwide users through December, up 21 percent from the previous year. Yahoo's email ranked second with 293 million users, a 2 percent decrease from the previous year, followed by Hotmail at 267 million users, a 16 percent decline from the previous year.

Microsoft, which is based in Redmond, Wash., is counting on Outlook.com to catapult the company back to the top of the email heap. During the preview period, Outlook attracted 60 million accountholders, including about 20 million that defected from Gmail, according to Microsoft. Comscore listed Outlook with 38 million users through December.

The new features being introduced in Outlook include: the ability to send massive files, including hundreds of photos at a time, in a single email; address books that automatically update new contact information that connections post on Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn; and about 60 percent fewer ads than Hotmail.

None of these features are revolutionary. Google already has been giving its users the option to switch to a new version of Gmail that also allows for larger files to be sent in a single email. And address books in Gmail already fetch new contact information posted on Google Plus, although it doesn't yet mine Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn.

Google declined to comment on Outlook.com. The company, which is based in Mountain View, Calif., plans to convert all of its Gmail users to its redesigned format within the next few months.

Yahoo, which is based in Sunnyvale, Calif. revamped its email service late last year in an effort to provide a more consistent experience on personal computers and mobile devices.

Outlook.com is the latest in a series of major product leases from Microsoft, which has been struggling to regain the cachet that once made it the world's most valuable technology company.

Now, both Apple Inc. and Google are worth more because they have been growing far faster than Microsoft as their products win more fans. Apple's biggest gains have come from the iPhone and IPad, while Google has been benefiting from its dominance in Internet search and its widely used Android software for mobile devices.

Microsoft has been trying to catch up with a major makeover of its Windows operating system, new smartphone software and a tablet computer called Surface. Like Outlook.com, all those products have been backed by expensive marketing campaigns in recent months.

Fibromyalgia prevalence at 2.1 percent of general German population

Study suggests fibromyalgia is a spectrum disorder

Researchers have determined that fibromyalgia prevalence is 2.1% of the general population in Germany. Results appearing in Arthritis Care & Research, a journal published by Wiley on behalf of the American College of Rheumatology (ACR), suggest that fibromyalgia is a spectrum disorder rather than a categorical illness. Additionally, a number of fibromyalgia cases in the general population satisfy proposed criteria for physical symptom disorderthe presence of one or more physical symptoms that impair function, which cannot be explained by another clinical or psychiatric illness.

Fibromyalgia is a chronic, musculoskeletal syndrome characterized by chronic widespread pain together with fatigue, sleep disturbances, cognitive problems, and multiple somatic symptoms. In 2010 the ACR released modified diagnostic criteria for fibromyalgia, eliminating the tender point count assessment that was part of the 1990 criteria. Shortly after the modified criteria was published it was decided that the widespread pain index and symptom severity score could be combined to form a new measurement of pain and symptom severity termed the polysymptomatic distress scale (PSD).

The lead author of the current study, Dr. Frederick Wolfe with the National Data Bank for Rheumatic Diseases and University of Kansas School of Medicine in Wichita, reported on 2,445 subjects who were randomly selected from the general German population in 2012. The team used the 2010 modified ACR preliminary diagnostic criteria for fibromyalgia to identify patients with the disease.

Findings show fibromyalgia prevalence at 2.1% with occurrence in women and men at 2.4% and 1.8%a difference that was not statistically significant according to researchers. Furthermore, the team found evidence supporting the hypothesis that fibromyalgia is a spectrum disorder and not a distinct disease. Nearly 40% of fibromyalgia patients met the proposed criteria for a physical symptom disorder.

The authors suggest that fibromyalgia should be considered a spectrum or dimensional disorder by giving the range of polysymptomatic distress experienced by patients. A patient with a widespread pain index of 7 or more out of 19 pain sites and symptom severity score of 5 or more out of 12 will have a PSD scale score of at least 12, a cut point below which fibromyalgia criteria will not be met.

"Given the continuum of symptoms in patients, our study provides important evidence supporting fibromyalgia as a spectrum disorder," concludes Dr. Wolfe. "Our findings have important implications for epidemiologic and neurobiologic studies, clinical diagnosis and disease management, along with determining disability in those with fibromyalgia."

Thanks for visiting WMJ. If you?re new here, please subscribe to our weekly blog post delivered three times a week. via email or to my RSS feed.

In our inaugural #workingmomchat, we thought it would be wise to talk about how overwhelming it gets sometimes with balancing it all. Sometimes, adding balance to our lives seems challenging and it comes in different format for everyone. In a hyperconnected world, where it?s almost a requirement to be on at least two or three social network, women are also taking the front seat. Women are spending 30% more time on social media than men. Women of course are also in charge of the homefront, childcare and even spending. Which means, things can go wrong quickly when priorities collide. Emily Bennington, ?Author of Who Says It?s a Man?s World: A Girl?s Guide to Corporate Domination will be our guest on #workingmomchat this week as we discuss the enormous task that faces new and seasoned career women in balancing career, home, kids, finances, household duties, fitness, and other unique tasks that are important to us (for example, blogging and social media). Emily brings with her years of experience as a coach, author and leader in corporate America, and with years of working with career women across America. Read Emily?s article here on ?How to Deal With Overwhelm?

Emily-Bennington_Studio_HiRes

Emily Bennington specializes in two distinct forms of career transition: college students entering the workforce and women leaders entering executive management. Her work deep dives into what Stephen Covey famously referred to as ?the space? between stimulus and response where she challenges executives to choose mindful, values-centered action. Emily is the author of?Who Says It?s a Man?s World: The Girls? Guide to Corporate Domination?and the coauthor of?Effective Immediately: How to Fit In, Stand Out, and Move Up at Your First Real Job, a book she wrote with her first boss and mentor Skip Lineberg. Emily has led training programs for numerous Fortune 500 companies and has been featured in business press ranging from CNN, ABC, and Fox to the?Wall Street Journal,?Glamour, and?Cosmopolitan. Emily can be reached online at www.emilybennington.com, on Facebook at www.facebook.com/EmilyBennington, and on Twitter at www.twitter.com/EmilyBennington.

Here are the five questions that we will discuss on #WorkingMomChat this Wednesday, February 20, 8-9PM EST. The format to answering any of the questions will be A1, A2, A3, A4 and A5 respectively and ending with #workingmomchat

Q1: How can we track competing priorities at home and in the workplace? Is it helping or hurting our ability to prioritize tasks and build deeper relationships?

Q2: Social media is overwhelming. How should working mothers approach social media usage in today?s hyperconnected world?

Q3: Stress can be a good or bad thing. How can we develop skills that results in optimal stress where we are productive without the overwhelm?

Q4: For mothers who work from home, the family and work stress could come all at once. How can we snap out of stress-mode & become effective.

Q5:?How best can we dominate the workplace with the enormous challenge we face as career-oriented moms?

Book-Cover-Who-Says-Its-a-Mans-World_LoRes (1)

We will randomly draw winners for Emily Bennington?s newly released book ?Who Says Its A Man?s World? during the chat.??Today?s women are primed to take over the corporate world, Emily shows us in her latest book. The honest truth is, at first I was just tired of another career women book, but when I dived into this book last night, I felt like Emily had reached into my soul and found all my fears and all my inadequacies. It?s the book that every career women, working mother and even supportive husbands? have been waiting for. More review to come! This is a tiny investment in your future, hop over to Amazon right now and grab your copy, thank WMJ later. See you ladies 8PM on Wednesday!

Student Loans And Credit Cards Coming Under More Scrutiny ...

Rising federal student loan debt and potential changes to how such loans are treated under bankruptcy could be a ?train?wreck? for U.S. taxpayers, Discover Financial Services President Roger Hochschild said.

The executive defended his company?s foray into the student lending market, stressing it adheres to high underwriting standards when approving loan applicants.

However, he accused the federal government, which now controls the majority of student lending, of lax underwriting.

?I actually think it?s going to hit all of us as taxpayers in terms of what it does for the federal student loan program and their utter and total lack of underwriting,? Hochschild said. ?But I do not think it will be a train wreck for Discover shareholders.?

Story by Andrew Johnson and Al Yoon for the Wall Street Journal.

Meanwhile, companies that issue credit cards can no longer market them to students at New Jersey public colleges under a law Gov. Christie signed Thursday.

The new law prohibits public colleges from entering into agreements that would allow students to be targeted in ?direct merchandising of credit cards,? which includes displays.

Rutgers and Rowan Universities are among the schools?that fall under the law.

The bill passed the state Assembly and Senate at the end of last year with overwhelming bipartisan support. Story by Jonathan Lai for the Philadelphia Inquirer.

UNMC cancer center parking garage to stay

HDR Architecture

An artist's rendering of the cancer center on the University of Nebraska Medical Center campus, shown from the Durham Research Plaza.

The parking garage will stay.

When officials first announced plans to build a cancer center on the west end of the University of Nebraska Medical Center campus, they said the parking structure near the Durham Outpatient Center would be razed to make way for the project. At the time, they said an underground parking garage would replace the 767 lost parking spots.

";var zflag_nid="1431";var zflag_cid="226/225/224";var zflag_sid="2";var zflag_width="1";var zflag_height="1";var zflag_sz="31";

UNMC cancer center plans

? A 10-story, 252,000-square-foot research tower

? A three-story, 125,000-square-foot inpatient treatment center

? A four-story, 200,000-square-foot outpatient clinic

? A clinic for non-emergency care that isn't cancer-related. That will be built elsewhere on campus.

? Total cost: About $370 million

But plans have evolved since January 2012, and the garage will remain. Among the other changes:

? Instead of one of the new buildings stretching south from Dewey Avenue to Emile Street, it now will stop short of the walkway that cuts between the parking structure and Swanson Hall.

? The building housing the cancer center's inpatient rooms will run farther east and connect to the Hixson-Lied Center.

Construction on the cancer center, a joint project of UNMC and its hospital partner, the Nebraska Medical Center, is expected to begin in late summer. It's set to be completed in 2016.

Joe Graham, the Nebraska Medical Center's chief operating officer, said keeping the parking garage in place will save money, cause less disruption for patients and visitors and allow for better connections back to the hospital's clinical spaces.

Demolition of Swanson Hall is scheduled to begin in June and run through August, said Don Mohlman, the cancer center project manager. Construction on the cancer center will start after that.

The plan to keep the parking garage in place has not affected officials' plans to acquire a square block south of Leavenworth Street for surface parking, a university spokesman said.

A 530-stall parking garage that opened in 1972 at 42nd and Emile Streets was closed in December because of concerns about the integrity of the structure.

Architect and developer Bob Perrin wants to build town homes and condos ? a total of 69 units ? on land that sits between 40th Street and the Field Club Trail and Mason and Marcy Streets. UNMC officials plan to use eminent domain to acquire the land.

The med center also has acquired two properties near Perrin's land that would provide a total of 651 parking stalls.

Perrin's property would hold 502 stalls.

Perrin said Wednesday in an email that he had received an appraiser's report that reaffirms UNMC's initial offer for the property.

He said he had not talked recently with UNMC officials.

8 Arab civilians detained by military in Timbuktu

(AP) ? Eight Arab men have been detained by the military in Timbuktu, raising fears of further reprisals against the region's Arab minority, whose members are accused of having supported the al-Qaida-linked fighters who had ruled northern Mali for most of the past year.

Witnesses late Saturday confirmed the Feb. 14 arrests.

Ibrahim Ould Ali said his 70-year-old father Ali Ould Mohamed Kalbali was taken from his shop. Mariam Mint Elbakaye, a merchant's wife, said her husband Mohamed Ould Mohamed Lamine was grabbed by soldiers while in the street. A neighbor said two brothers were taken by the army from their home and another resident said four truck drivers were taken from the Abaradjou neighborhood.

Islamic extremists had fled Timbuktu before French and Malian forces arrived at the end of January.

Rumor: Google Planning to Open Retail Stores?

Sergey Brin Google Glass Demo

Google opening up a retail store or two? That's this weekend's big rumor, with a few unknown sources letting slip that the search giant might be looking to open up stand-alone shops around the U.S. in a bid to get more Google products ? tablets, phones, and all the other fun things cooking at Google HQ (glasses, anyone?) ? into consumer hands.

It's a move that makes complete sense, given that competitors Microsoft and Apple both have retail stores of their own for pushing out product. And while Google's tested the retail waters a bit with some "store-within-a-store" setups at various Best Buy locations across the United States, the company has yet to go the full nine yards and establish broader retails presences that could focus more on selling instead of showing, as 9to5google's Seth Weintraub suggests.

According to Weintraub, the talk of opening retail Google stores allegedly stemmed from conversations surrounding Google's upcoming "Glass" project, or Google's wearable glasses with built-in heads-up displays. The thought is that Google believes Glass is the kind of project that's more easily sold to consumers when they're given a chance to actually get their hands on (or eyes behind) the glasses themselves. Hence the notion that Google might need to step up its retail game in order to build buzz, interest, and sales around Glass and other Google-branded devices.

"Many people simply aren't going to pop for a $200 phone or tablet, and especially a $500-and-up head-mounted display, without feeling it in their hands. That's especially so when they know?or think they know, thanks to Apple's amazing marketing and product design?that they're buying what may not be the top-end products in the market. And here's the thing: Google's best products, such as its Nexus 7 tablet, are pretty darn good. So at least some of them?not all, by any means?can stand up to hands-on scrutiny," writes Forbes' Robert Hof.

There's no indication as to when Google might officially begin opening up retail stores ? if that's indeed the company's projected plan. After all, it was just this past December when Google's vice president of product management, Sameer Samat, said that Google has no intentions to open up an official retail presence.
