By Alex Madlangbayan on Oct 30, 2011 in Baseball, Sports, United States, World ? No comments

U.S. Mint of the National Treasury will mint gold coins in celebration of the 75th anniversary of the U.S. Baseball Hall of Fame, according to reports by several international news sites on Friday, October 28, 2011.

The U.S Mint will be producing no more than 50,000 $5 gold coins, 400,000 $1 silver coins and 750,000 half dollar coins over a period of one year starting January 1, 2015. The production was given permission by the U.S. Secretary of National Treasury.

A bill to mint the coins will need the approval of the U.S. Senate and before it can be signed by U.S. President Barack Obama. Reports say that the bill will gain quick approval since baseball is a very popular game in the U.S..

The U.S. baseball hall of fame building opened in 1939 and became a national landmark. About 15 million people reportedly visited the building which exhibits baseball items of the greatest players of the game that include Babe Ruth, Mickey Mantel, Roger Maris and many others.

Drunk, naked driver smashes 12 cars in Moscow (AP)

MOSCOW ? Russian police say a drunk and naked driver has wreaked havoc in central Moscow, damaging 12 cars before being caught by police.

The city police said they started pursuing the man Sunday after he ignored a road sign banning a turn and refused orders to stop. In the ensuing chase, the motorist nearly hit a school bus, rammed through a police vehicle and smashed several other cars before being caught. When police got him he was completely naked.

Footage broadcast by Russian television stations showed him lying on the pavement and shouting "don't cover me!" to officers who tried to cover him with clothes.

The man said he came from the ex-Soviet nation of Moldova and was in distress over an unhappy relationship.

Daily Aspirin May Help Prevent Colon Cancer for Those at High Risk (HealthDay)

THURSDAY, Oct. 27 (HealthDay News) -- Two aspirin a day may cut the risk of colon cancer by more than half in people who are predisposed to these types of tumors, new research suggests.

And two tablets of 300 milligrams each also cut the risk of other tumors related to Lynch syndrome, a major form of hereditary colon and other cancers, according to research published in the Oct. 28 online edition of The Lancet.

People with Lynch syndrome should talk to their doctors about taking daily aspirin, keeping in mind that aspirin does have side effects, including stomach ulcers, said the study authors.

Previous research has found that otherwise healthy people who take about 75 milligrams (mg) of aspirin a day reduced not only their risk of developing colon cancer but also their chances of dying from it.

But the one in 1,000 people who have Lynch syndrome, also known as hereditary nonpolyposis colorectal cancer (or HNPCC), have a much higher risk of cancer than the general population: About half of people with these genetic abnormalities will go on to develop cancer in their 30s or 40s.

Earlier data from this trial showed no reduction in colon cancer among regular aspirin takers but that phase of the study only followed people for two years.

This part of the study, which was funded by a consortium of cancer organizations and Bayer Corporation, followed 861 carriers of Lynch syndrome for about four years.

The participants were randomly chosen to take either 600 mg of aspirin (427 patients) in two tablets daily or a placebo (434 patients) for at least two years.

Participants were also randomly selected to receive a resistant starch, thought to protect against colorectal cancer, or a placebo. "There's evidence that people on high-carbohydrate diets have a lower incidence of colon cancer," said study lead author Dr. John Burn, professor of clinical genetics at Newcastle University in England, during a Thursday press conference.

"In people taking aspirin, there were 10 colorectal cancers versus 23 in the placebo group," Burn reported. "We reduced by 60 percent the number of colon cancers in people who actually took aspirin for two years."

The incidence of other forms of Lynch syndrome-related cancers was also reduced and the authors hope to see a reduction in non-Lynch syndrome-related cancers over the coming years.

Surprisingly, however, there was no difference in the number of polyps in the two groups, indicating that "there must be something [happening] early in the process," said Burn.

"One possibility is that [aspirin] might be enhancing programmed cell death or apoptosis in [certain] cells that will go on to become cancer," he added.

Also surprisingly, side effects from "what seems like a huge dose of aspirin," Burn said, were about equal: 11 in the treatment arm and nine in the placebo arm.

"Results of this study support aspirin use for people with Lynch syndrome, in addition to regular colonoscopies as recommended by their health care provider," said Eric Jacobs, strategic director of pharmacoepidemiology for the American Cancer Society. "However, aspirin use can have side effects and should be discussed with a health care provider."

Jacobs added that aspirin use is not presently recommended for cancer prevention alone "because even low-dose aspirin can increase the risk of serious stomach bleeding."

The next phase of the study will randomly select people to receive differing doses of aspirin, from 75 mg to 600 mg, and follow them for five years.

If a lower dose proves also to be effective at lowering the incidence of colon cancer, that might reduce side effects even more, Burn said.

"This is a randomized, controlled trial so it's the best data by far you can get," said Dr. Richard Whelan, chief of colorectal surgery at St. Luke's Roosevelt Hospital in New York City. "If you've been diagnosed with Lynch syndrome, you should talk to your doctor to make sure you're not at high risk for complications from aspirin such as a history of ulcers, gastritis, gastrointestinal problems," Whelan noted.

"If you are at risk, it may be possible to add preventive medicines to protect against ulcers and the like," he said. But the results "cannot be extrapolated to the general population," Whelan continued. "There the level of evidence is much lower."

Republicans seek $2.2 trillion in deficit cuts (Reuters)

WASHINGTON (Reuters) ? Republicans in Congress are calling for $2.2 trillion in deficit-reduction, including significant cuts to healthcare programs for the elderly and poor along with tax changes that they argue would boost the economy, congressional aides said on Thursday.

The plan offered by Republicans who serve on a congressional "super committee" tasked with slashing deficits calls for cuts to the Medicare and Medicaid health programs for the poor and elderly and other health and welfare programs.

The panel of six Republicans and six Democrats have been negotiating behind closed doors, but the details of the Republican plan that have emerged show the two sides far apart over the issue of tax increases to reduce the deficit.

Aides said the Republican plan claims hundreds of billions of dollars in savings by lowering corporate and individual tax rates. They say that would increase economic activity and bring in more revenue. Democrats have argued that position is a non-starter for them.

In contrast to a Democratic plan that has an almost even balance between spending cuts and tax increases, House of Representatives Speaker John Boehner said the focus of deficit reduction efforts should be almost exclusively on cutting benefit programs.

He rejected the idea of additional defense spending cuts.

"When you look at what is yet to be done by the super committee, almost all of that is going to fall in the area, I think, of mandatory spending, which is more than two thirds of the budget. It is time for us to do our work there," Boehner told reporters.

PLAN DRAWS FIRE

Mandatory programs range from Medicare and Medicaid to the Social Security retirement plan and food stamp program for the poor. It also includes federal workers' pension plans.

Congressional aides, who asked not to be identified, said the Republican proposal has $785 billion in mandatory spending cuts, including $500 billion for Medicare, $185 billion for Medicaid and $100 billion for other health programs.

The Medicare cuts include premium increases for beneficiaries, according to a congressional aide.

There are an additional $400 billion in spending cuts for other mandatory spending programs that include government retirement programs and food stamps, according to other aides.

The proposal also includes a controversial plan to change the way annual benefit increases are calculated for Social Security and other government programs to reflect a lower rate of inflation than the current formula.

The Republican plan calls for tax changes, but would dedicate any revenues generated by closing tax loopholes and other breaks to reducing overall income tax rates, the aides said.

The Republican plan immediately drew fire from Democrats. They complained it was designed more to please Grover Norquist, who heads the conservative Americans Tax Reform, which opposes tax increases to reduce the deficit.

"Their offer is a joke," said a Democratic aide who declined to be identified.

The Republican offer came after Democrats on the panel proposed on Tuesday about $3 trillion in savings over 10 years through an equal mix of spending cuts, which also include cuts for Medicare and Medicaid.

The super committee has been asked to develop a plan for at least $1.2 trillion in deficit cuts over 10 years. If it fails to reach a deal an equivalent amount in automatic spending cuts would be triggered.

Boehner said he wanted to avoid the automatic spending cuts, which would fall heavily on the defense sector, traditionally favored by Republicans.

US doubts diplomacy will sway North Korea on nukes (AP)

SEOUL, South Korea ? U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta expressed doubt Thursday that diplomacy will persuade North Korea to surrender its nuclear weapons and he raised the prospect of stalemate leading to "escalation and confrontation."

After daylong meetings with South Korea's government leaders, Panetta told reporters he was concerned by North Korea's pattern of deliberately shifting from periods of modest accommodation with the West to episodes of violent aggression, perhaps with no real intention of giving up its nuclear ambitions.

Asked whether he thinks a renewed effort by the Obama administration to explore a possible new round of international negotiations with North Korea will work, Panetta was blunt.

"We're not sure where those talks are headed at this point," he said, referring to discussions held this week in Geneva by American and North Korean diplomats. The talks yielded suggestions of progress but no apparent breakthrough.

"For that reason, I guess the word `skepticism' would be in order," he said.

The Pentagon chief said he believes, nonetheless, that efforts at a diplomatic solution must go on.

"On the one hand, we have to engage," he said. "We have to try to seek the hope that ultimately they'll do the right thing and join the international family of nations. ... But I think we always have to be cautious that at the same time, they're going to continue to develop their nuclear capability."

In the same session with reporters, the commander of U.S. Forces Korea, Army Gen. J.D. Thurman, indicated that he suspects the North Koreans are determined to keep up the expansion of their nuclear capabilities.

"Based on what I have observed, they show a willingness to continue to develop and test capabilities that can be associated with their nuclear program," Thurman said. "This is something we've got to remain vigilant on."

Separately, the State Department's top Asia policy official, Kurt Campbell, was in the South Korean capital on Thursday to brief officials on the Geneva talks.

North Korea's foreign ministry issued a statement saying the talks "helped deepen each other's understanding." The statement said both sides agreed to further talks on whether to resume the international discussions involving North and South Korea, Japan, China, Russia and the United States.

Panetta said China, a longtime North Korean ally, "can do more" to push North Korea to give up its nuclear program.

"There are moments when we think that they are urging North Korea to engage, but frankly I think China can do more to try to get North Korea to do the right thing," he added.

"I know that sometimes they make that effort and sometimes North Korea doesn't pay attention."

Panetta's first visit to South Korea as defense secretary is part of a broader U.S. effort to shore up South Korea's confidence in a military alliance that has endured for six decades.

Panetta met with the South Korean defense and foreign affairs chiefs and paid a courtesy call on President Lee Myung-bak.

In parallel talks, the new chairman of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff, Army Gen. Martin Dempsey and top officers from the U.S. Pacific Command met with top South Korean military officers for an annual review of the U.S.-South Korean military alliance.

Panetta planned to attend a second round of alliance talks Friday before flying home.

Panetta has called the North "reckless" and a "serious threat" to peace on the Korean peninsula, which exploded in war in 1950 and drew the U.S. and other nations into a three-year conflict against the North and China.

Panetta was asked by reporters what he thinks can be done to break a cycle of North Korean behavior in which it alternately makes gestures of accommodation to the West, followed by provocations.

"The cycle ultimately has to be broken," he said. "There is either going to be an accommodation where they decide to make the right decisions with regards to their future and join the international family of nations ... or, if they continue these provocations, then obviously that's going to lead to the possibility of escalation and confrontation."

Among the maneuverings that influence U.S. thinking about the security threat posed by North Korea is the process now under way in which the supreme leader, Kim Jong Il, is expected to turn over the reins of power to his son, Kim Jong Un, a newly minted four-star general believed in his late 20s. He would be the third generation leader in a family dynasty that has ruled since Kim Il Sung founded the Democratic People's Republic of Korea in 1948.

U.S. officials are unsure what timeline has been set for the leadership succession. But two senior American military officers in Seoul said it appears the process has slowed, possibly because Kim Jong Il's health problems seem to have eased. The officials spoke to a group of reporters on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the topic.

U.S. and South Korean officials believe Kim Jong Il had a stroke in August 2008 that kept him out of the public eye for months.

The officials, who are privy to the latest intelligence assessments, said North Korea's recently more accommodating approach to the U.S. is judged to be only a tactical maneuver likely to be followed next year by demands for concessions. That would follow a decades-long pattern in which unmet concessions lead to a period of provocations from North Korea, such as the 2006 nuclear test that came just months after the North cut off nuclear disarmament talks.

The U.S. officials declined to say whether they believe the North can be persuaded to give up its nuclear weapons, but their analysis of the North's basic approach to the West strongly suggested that they do not expect it to change course.

State: Gaming tribes underpay millions | Santa Fe, N.M. | KRQE ...

SANTA FE (AP) - State gaming regulators say most of New Mexico's 14 tribes that operate casinos could soon receive notices that they're not complying with agreements for sharing their casino take with the state.

Gaming board chairman David Norvell tells the Santa Fe New Mexican that "most" of the gaming tribes are responsible for what now totals an underpayment of between $13 million and $20 million, although he couldn't specify which ones.

The issue is "free play" aimed at getting gamblers in the door. Norvell says the casinos wrongly incorporate it in a formula used to determine what they owe the state.

Pojoaque Pueblo chief executive Allen Mosley says if you give something to someone for free, why should you have to pay a tax?

In the second quarter of 2011, tribes paid the state about $16 million in revenue sharing.

Senior Pentagon official resigns (Politico)

A senior Pentagon official whose leadership style reportedly was under investigation by the department?s inspector general resigned Thursday.

Defense Secretary Leon Panetta has accepted the resignation of Clifford Stanley, a retired Marine Corps major general and undersecretary for personnel and readiness, according to Assistant Secretary of Defense for Public Affairs Doug Wilson. Stanley will leave his post within two weeks, Wilson said.

?He felt he had done his utmost to carry out the mandate he was given, and that he had arrived at the point where the next steps could be carried out most effectively by a successor. His decision to resign was his own,? Wilson said in a statement.

?Secretary Panetta, who is on travel in Asia, believes that Dr. Stanley has been a devoted public servant ? including as a Marine ? for all of his professional career,? Wilson added. ?He has praised Dr. Stanley as an advocate for America?s men and women in uniform. The secretary has accepted his resignation, and upon his return will personally convey his appreciation for Dr. Stanley?s service as part of the Pentagon?s senior leadership team.?

In his resignation letter, Stanley expressed his ?gratitude ? for this truly unique opportunity to serve? and his belief that the personnel and readiness division ?is on the right path.?

Stanley took over the post in February 2010, assigned by then-Secretary Robert Gates to shake up the agency.

However, his leadership style sparked accusations, mostly anonymous, that he had ?hurt morale by dismissing or reassigning dozens of top officials, spent lavishly on a new conference room, and offended staff members when he used the word ?mongoloidism? to describe people of low intelligence,? The Washington Post reported in August.

Wilson said Stanley will be replaced by his deputy, Jo Ann Rooney, until a permanent successor is confirmed.

(AP) ? Boeing's much-anticipated 787 carried its first passengers Wednesday on a four-hour, 8-minute flight filled with cheers, picture-taking and swapping of aviation stories.

The new long-haul jet aims to change the way passengers think about flying with larger windows, improved lighting and air pressure and humidity that more closely resembles that on the ground.

It's not the fastest jet or the largest jet but the plane, nicknamed The Dreamliner by Boeing Co., is built of lightweight materials that promise to dramatically improve fuel efficiency. The first flight, from Tokyo to Hong Kong, was filled with 240 aviation reporters and enthusiasts ? some of whom paid thousands of dollars for the privilege.

"It's silly, but it's a little piece of history. New cars come out all the time but how often do new planes come out?" said Stephanie Wood. She and her husband Dean, of Davie, Fla., won a charity auction, paying nearly $18,700 for two business-class seats. Another passenger paid $32,000.

The most noticeable feature of the plane is its windows, which are 30 percent larger than those on older jets. Passengers no longer need to hunch forward to see the ground. Those in the middle of the plane can even glance out part of the windows. The shades are replaced with a glare-reducing, electrical dimming system that adds tint to the window within 30 seconds.

"The windows are absolutely amazing. You're not confined. You've got the outside inside," Wood said.

The $193.5 million plane's debut was delayed more than three years because of manufacturing problems. But that didn't bother the fans who broke out in applause at every opportunity.

The highlight for many was a rainbow-colored light show that transformed the sedate white interior into something closer to the Las Vegas strip.

Many of the 106 enthusiasts on board the flight by Japan's All Nippon Airways were carrying memorabilia from past inaugural flights and snapping photos of everything from the overhead bins to the bathroom with a window and bidet.

Thomas Lee, of Los Angeles, handed out his own press release and biography. There was his first inaugural flight ? the Boeing 747 as a 17-year-old boy in 1970 ? and then the Airbus A380 four years ago.

"I'm not crazy," he said. "For an aviation enthusiast, this is as high as it gets. It's like going to a movie on opening day."

He and the rest of the coach passengers paid the apt sum of 78,700 yen, about $1,035, to be part of the inaugural flight.

The 787 has been sold by Boeing as a "game changer," promising to revolutionize air travel just as its 707 did by allowing nonstop trans-Atlantic service and the 747 did by ushering in an age of mass travel.

The 787 is designed to connect cities that might otherwise not have nonstop flights. Planes like the Boeing 747 and 777 and the Airbus A380 can fly most long-haul routes but finding enough daily passengers to fill the massive jets is a challenge. The A380 typically has 525 passengers but can hold up to 853.

The 787 only carries 210 to 250 passengers. That means it can fly nonstop routes that larger planes can't profitably support like San Francisco to Manchester, England or Boston to Athens, Greece.

"It's going to be a hub-avoiding machine," said Ernie Arvai, partner with aviation consulting firm AirInsight. "You'd pay extra not to go to (London's) Heathrow."

Connecting such smaller cities is the "holy grail" of air travel, said Richard Aboulafia, analyst with the Teal Group. That's why the plane is the fastest-selling new jet in aviation history. There were 821 orders for the 787 before its first flight, although 24 were recently canceled by China Eastern Airlines because of delays. Now, the industry is waiting to see if the plane meets Boeing's 20 percent fuel-savings claims.

"If it performs as promised, it's the iPod of the aircraft world. If it doesn't, it's just another CD player," Aboulafia said.

ANA is the first airline to fly the plane and expects to have seven of them by the end of the year. United Continental Holdings Inc. will be the first U.S. carrier to fly the 787, sometime in the second half of 2012. It's planning to use the plane between Houston and Auckland, New Zealand.

There will probably be a short period when United ? which ordered 50 of the jets ? uses its first 787 on domestic or short trans-Atlantic flights. To make the Auckland route work, it will need a second 787 flying in the other direction.

For passengers, the changes start with boarding. They enter into a wide-open area with sweeping arches. Eyes instinctively move up. There's an impression of more space. Claustrophobia is reduced just a bit, even if seats are as cramped as ever.

Another physiological trick: lights gradually change color during long flights to reduce jet lag.

But the biggest changes come thanks to the stronger composite shell, which is less susceptible to corrosion than aluminum. Air won't be as dry, with humidity doubled to 16 percent. The cabin will be pressurized at the equivalent of 6,000 feet ? 2,000 less than most planes. That should lead to fewer headaches and leave passengers with more energy during long trips. A number of passengers said Wednesday's flight was too short to notice any improvement.

Other changes for passengers include:

? The largest overhead bins ever. They are designed at an angle to make the cabin feel significantly larger. Boeing says there's enough room overhead for every passenger to have one carry-on bag; however, the only way that seemed feasible was with identically rectangle bags, stacked in the optimal order.

? Less noise. New engines with a wave pattern around the exhaust reduce interior and exterior noise, although Boeing won't say by how much. Since the plane is lighter, additional sound and vibration padding can be added. Wednesday's flight appeared quieter, but a handheld sound meter registered noise levels similar to Boeing's 777.

? Later models will have a turbulence dampening system. Accelerometers in the nose register a sudden drop. A signal is sent in nano seconds via fiber-optic cables to the wings. Adjustments are made and what would have been a 9-foot drop is cut to 3 feet.

Most passengers don't know the make or model of their plane, unless they read the safety instruction card. The 787's interior is likely to change that. Even those who don't fly it, are likely to notice.

Hundreds of employees at Hong Kong airport stopped working to watch ? and take photos ? of Wednesday's arrival.

"We're celebrities," said passenger Lee Simonetta of Atlanta. "We ought to just taxi around for an hour."

Gaddafi son preparing to flee Libya: NTC official (Reuters)

TRIPOLI (Reuters) ? Saif al-Islam Gaddafi, a fugitive son of the deposed Libyan leader, is near Libya's borders with Niger and Algeria and planning to flee the country using a forged passport, an official with the National Transitional Council said on Monday.

"He's on the triangle of Niger and Algeria. He's south of Ghat, the Ghat area. He was given a false Libyan passport from the area of Murzuq," the official told Reuters by telephone.

The official said Muammar Gaddafi's former intelligence chief Abdullah al-Senussi was involved in the escape plot.

"In the south, they intercepted Thuraya (satellite telephone) communications. Abdullah Senussi has been on the border in that area to organize his exit and also a neighboring intelligence source tipped us off about that," the official said.

Saif al-Islam, a fluent English speaker who studied at the London School of Economics, is the only one of Muammar Gaddafi's sons still unaccounted for.

Two fled to Algeria, one is in Niger, two were killed earlier in the Libyan conflict and one, Mo'tassim, was killed after being captured with his father last week near the city of Sirte.

The International Criminal Court earlier this year issued an arrest warrant for Saif al-Islam, and another for al-Senussi.

The NTC official said it would be difficult to track Saif al-Islam's movements and stop him crossing out of Libya.

"The region is very, very difficult to monitor and encircle. It needs warplanes. Even NATO cannot monitor this area," he said.

"It needs a large force of our brigades to intercept and to be able to monitor and hunt him down. It is very, very difficult. All we have there is some small-scale patrols of our fighters."

"The region is a desert region and it has many exits. It is also a smuggling route. It has many, many exit routes."

The Class War Has Begun

New York Magazine:

During the death throes of Herbert Hoover?s presidency in June 1932, desperate bands of men traveled to Washington and set up camp within view of the Capitol. The first contingent journeyed all the way from Portland, Oregon, but others soon converged from all over?alone, in groups, with families?until their main Hooverville on the Anacostia River?s fetid mudflats swelled to a population as high as 20,000. The men, World War I veterans who could not find jobs, became known as the Bonus Army?for the modest government bonus they were owed for their service.

(AP) ? The girlfriend of an Army National Guard soldier who fatally shot a sheriff's deputy and himself told investigators the gunman "definitely had a drinking problem" and grabbed an assault rifle from his trunk after she made him pull over while he was driving drunk, a Georgia sheriff said Monday.

"She said he had been drinking and he was drunk and that when he gets drunk, he gets violent," Richmond County Sheriff Ronald Strength said. "Why shoot a law enforcement officer? We don't have that answer."

Spc. Christopher Michael Hodges, 26, was randomly firing an assault rifle into traffic from behind his car on the side of an Augusta highway at about 1 a.m. Sunday when Deputy James Paugh pulled over and was shot ? apparently not realizing at first that Hodges posed a threat, authorities said.

Hodges served in the Tennessee National Guard but had been training at Fort Gordon in Augusta for six months. Strength said Hodges' girlfriend told police that they had gotten into an argument in the car after he had gotten drunk at a friend's house.

"She said he definitely had a drinking problem," the sheriff said.

Hodges pulled off the highway and into the grass after "she got mad and said, 'Let me out. I want to go home,'" Strength said. "That's when he got out and got the rifle out of the car and started shooting."

The sheriff said Hodges didn't shoot at the woman, whose name wasn't released, but seemed to be randomly firing as he emptied one magazine on the M4 rifle and loaded another. Investigators found at least 40 shell casings, though no motorists reported being hit, Strength said. He said authorities were working to trace the gun, and Fort Gordon officials had determined it didn't come from the Army post.

Meanwhile investigators were awaiting autopsy results likely ready on Tuesday that are expected to include tests for drugs and alcohol in Hodges' blood.

And investigators were still trying to fill in the details of Hodges' military service for clues to what led to his outburst. Strength said authorities had determined the citizen-soldier had served in Iraq, but he wasn't sure of the timeline. He also cautioned that, while investigators are interested in whether Hodges suffered from any service-related mental problems, "we're not psychiatrists or psychologists."

"There are many things that will never be answered," Strength said.

The military said Hodges had served on active duty and later in the National Guard at least since 2005, when he was stationed at Fort Stewart with the Army's 3rd Infantry Division. His four years based at the southeast Georgia post included a yearlong deployment to Iraq from 2007 to 2008.

According to the Tennessee National Guard, Hodges joined its ranks in February after he'd spent about two years in the Georgia Guard.

"This is a time of deep sorrow for all involved and in the midst of this tragedy our thoughts are first and foremost with the families," Major Gen. Max Haston, Tennessee's adjutant general, said in a statement Monday. He said the military is working with civilian authorities to figure out what happened.

Neither Tennessee National Guard nor Fort Gordon officials have said what sort of training Hodges was doing at the post in Augusta. He belonged to the 1st Battalion,107th Aviation Regiment based in Smyrna, Tenn., which deployed to Afghanistan in June while Hodges was training at Fort Gordon.

Paugh was one of Richmond County's veteran deputies, having served for 17 years. Strength said the slain deputy was off-duty but still wearing his uniform when he was shot.

He said Paugh, 47, was riding his motorcycle home after spending the evening on patrol outside Augusta's fall fair. Authorities believe the deputy spotted Hodges' car beside the highway and stopped check.

Investigators found Paugh's motorcycle lying on its side in the grass, leading them to believe Hodges opened fire on the deputy before he could put down his kickstand. Evidence shows Paugh fired two shots from his service handgun, but he missed Hodges.

His funeral was planned for 11 a.m. Thursday at First Baptist Church of Augusta.

"We're set up for more than 1,000," said sheriff's Capt. Scott Gay. "We know that people are coming from all over Georgia and from throughout the United States."

Gay said his department has been flooded with emails and notes from well-wishers.

One of them, from a doctor in Ohio, said the deputy "is a true hero" and expressed hope that his family finds some comfort.

"I hope the fact that he is being honored by so many brings them some comfort in this time of loss," the note stated. "May they feel comfort and love from across the nation."

2012 Ford Focus and 2011 Ford Fiesta at SEMA

Ford?s hot-selling new Focus is making its SEMA (Specialty Equipment Market Association) show debut with seven customized cars that showcase the possibilities of both the hatch and sedan. Offering just about anything a customer could want to amp up the performance and personalization of the car, the Focus models have a wide variety of upgrades and enhancements. Since launch, the new Focus has been gaining interest, with nearly 500,000 customers raising their hands to request more information about the latest small car from Ford.

?Millennials, which this car is all about, want to personalize every aspect of their lives ? everything from laptop covers to body art, and even cars,? said Mike Murphy, C-Car Marketing manager. ?Being unique allows them to stand apart and be different, and all the Focus models we have on display at SEMA live up to that standard.?

The hot-selling Fiesta adds to Ford?s SEMA display, showing off the possibilities for a car with a style all its own.

?Fiesta is a natural fit for SEMA because it?s a unique brand,? said Lew Echlin, Ford Global Car Marketing manager. ?One of the top three purchase reasons for the vehicle is that it fits the customer?s personality. Steven Nereo: The Silent Crisis

With the decline in availability of natural resources, there is no question that the world is reaching a tipping point. A time when the availability of fossil fuels or natural gasses approaches terminal velocity. A time when there is no turning back. No researching of the alternatives or energy for the impending conversion. This crisis is no secret though, and spoken about at length lending some hope that solutions will be arrived at.

It's the silent crisis amongst us that is a lot more troubling. The real threat to our society which looms with gnashing teeth above all of us, just waiting to sink them into the soft and tender flesh of our social fabric and shredding it like a young pitbull's chew toy. Yes, I'm talking about the shortage of reclaimed wood.

"It's not pretty out there" says San francisco's Outerlands restaurant owner Blaine Potmice. "There's an empty gas station across the street we would love to turn into a cafe, but with the price of reclaimed wood these days, it's just not feasible..." He pauses thoughtfully before solemnly adding, "What can I say, there's no other words for it but sad....and scary."

What began as a simple solution to counter expensive building supplies has ironically turned into the problem itself. All across America's urban centers, the bedraggled hoi polloi have gathered around the comforting aura of reclaimed wood. Be it the countertops they receive their caffeinated creations on or the shelving that holds their vintage surf photographic books and hand-screened trucker caps.

Reusing wood is nothing new, but as a viable trend and wholesale vibe for an entire generation's interiors, we can look no furthur than Mollusk Surf Shop -- also located in San Francisco's aptly named Reclaimed Wood District, RecWo for short -- for this trend's humble beginnings.

"I thought we were just building a nice affordable interior that reflected our love of the sea-worn 'hutacillios' that dot Baja California's beacheside" states Mollusk owner Spencer Sumerhador. "I never imagined we'd kickstart an entire movement." When asked how he feels about the trend -- and resulting shortage -- Spencer answers with calculated thought, "Honestly, I just wish I could find some usable wood."

The problem is simple, people just aren't weathering wood like they used to. With stronger finishes and more permanent building techniques, the worn, hand-painted, barn-side advertisement or farmhouse flooring of yesteryear no longer exist. Alternative materials are being used in their place, but their ability to transform a barren space into an endogenous hearth welcoming of woolen-clad patrons whilst simultaneously showcasing artisanal delectabilities is unparalleled.

"Yes, I've tried these alternatives" says a Williamsburg cafe entrepreneur who wishes to remain anonymous, "But reclaimed Linoleum? Reclaimed cement? How do I expect others to enjoy a single-origin half-pull in such an incommodious space when I know that I myself could never?"

As of now, there is no solution. With more and more establishments recognizing the hypnotic, hipster-draw of reclaimed wood, they will go to no ends to procure it. Until the day we find an acceptable alternative, there will be no relief. That doesn't mean all hope is lost as recycled glass tiles are showing much promise, but we still have a long way to go until we are out of the (reclaimed) woods.

Old-Time Radio Convention Meets For Last Time

NEWARK, N.J. ? The annual Friends of Old-Time Radio Convention is signing off for the last time Saturday.

The ghosts and survivors of Jack Benny, Benny Goodman and hundreds of other legends of the old days of radio are holding court for one final weekend at a hotel in Newark, N.J.

After 36 years, musician and organizer Jay Hickerson says the march of time has taken its toll.

The gathering used to call on a constellation of stars from radio's early days. Now it's down to former child stars in their 80s and 90s.

Eighty-eight-year-old Arthur Anderson acted as a teen with Orson Welles and is an honored guest. Also on this year's program are the grandsons of 1930s song and dance star Eddie Cantor and Brace Beemer, voice of the Lone Ranger.
