Nepal harvest rush threatens "Himalayan Viagra"

KATHMANDU (Reuters) - For decades a rare fungus valued as an aphrodisiac and dubbed "Himalayan Viagra" has been a source of income for poor villagers in Nepal's remote Himalayan foothills.

Men, women and children stream into high meadows every year to harvest the fungus called Yarsagumba, which grows from dead moth larvae. High quality specimens fetch thousands of dollars a kilo.

But experts say the fungus, found only above 3,500 metres (11,480 feet), is under threat and yields are falling, threatening the livelihood of thousands of people who depend on it for up to 70 percent of their income.

"Over-harvesting, premature harvesting, destruction of the pastureland, and perhaps climate change are the major causes of decline," said Uttam Babu Shrestha, a graduate student at the University of Massachusetts. "If this continues it could become extinct soon."

Known as Yartsa gunbu in Tibet, meaning summer grass winter worm, the parasitic fungus kills and then grows on ghost moth larvae in the ground.

Although there is so scientific evidence, the small fungus is prized in traditional Chinese and Tibetan medicines as a tonic to increase vigour.

During the annual May and June picking season thousands of Nepali villagers journey in mule and yak trains to high pastures to look for the tiny buds that protrude from the ground.

Shrestha said villagers who collected several kilos of Yarsagumba 10 years ago now find only a few pieces roughly the size of a potato chip.

"This year has been the worst. Many collectors in Dolpa returned without any," said Shrestha, referring to a region bordering Tibet.

The area, where 50,000 people look for the fungus every year, accounts for more than half of Nepal's annual harvest, which topped 1,170 kilos (2,577 pounds) last year.

Chinese demand for the fungus is soaring. Villagers received $6 (3.82 pounds) for a piece of Yarsagumba about the size of a chilli this year - twice the amount they received last year. In Kathmandu, high quality fungus sells for up to $31,000 a kilo, according to traders.

DAMAGE TO ENVIRONMENT

Commercial collection of the fungus began some 30 years ago.

Nepali villager Tshewang Lama, who lived in a village bordering Tibet, saw how some Chinese army officials in the neighbouring Tibetan town of Taklakot took drops of Yarsagumba as tincture to increase immunity, cure tuberculosis, fatigue, paralysis and cancer.

Lama used the fungus to cure his sleep disorder and other ailments and become one of the first gatherers.

Shrestha said abandoned trash, open defecation and trees cut for cooking and heating damaged the hills where the fungus grows.

"If these are not checked in time the environmental cost will be bigger than its economic benefits," he explained.

Officials said the government collected $132,000 from the export of the fungus in 2011, but analysts said the figures may be low because many villagers sell their crop directly in Tibet without reporting transactions.

Filmmaker Dipendra Bhandari, who made the documentary "Journey to Yarsa" about the fungus harvest, said in several remote villages children accompany their parents during the picking season when schools are closed for two months.

He added that it can be dangerous and villagers fall sick or die during the long journey. In 2009, seven gatherers were killed in a fight with locals over the fungus in west Nepal, and two years earlier at least 16 people perished when a snowstorm buried their camp in Dolpa.

Lama believes the government should regulate trade and strengthen local institutions to ensure pickers get the maximum benefits from the trade.

"It is a money plant. We should conserve it so the harvest becomes sustainable in the long run," Lama said.

St. Thomas Real Estate Analysis: June Data Show Fifth-Consecutive ...

By: University of St. Thomas News Service

Arrows on the Twin Cities real estate chart pointed upward for the fifth consecutive month, according to the Residential Real Estate Price Report Index, a monthly analysis of the 13-county Twin Cities area prepared by the Shenehon Center for Real Estate at the University of St. Thomas? Opus College of Business.

?Twin Cities? housing data for June continued to show encouraging signs for the fifth month in a row,? observed Herb Tousley, director of real estate programs at the university.

Will the trend will continue?? ?In 2011 the market was in a similar condition after a spring and early summer run-up, only to be derailed by a lack of confidence created by the federal debt-level-ceiling controversy, the U.S. government credit downgrade, and the emergence of financial problems in Europe,? Tousley said.

?Barring any serious external shocks, the second half of 2012 will test the durability of gains made in the first half of the year,? he said. ?Historically, sales volume and median prices have decreased in the second half of the year.

?Will sales volumes and median prices continue to exceed last year?s levels? If the answer is yes, then it would appear the market has established the beginning of a sustained recovery,? he said.

Tousley cautioned that recent market gains do not mean the mortgage foreclosure crisis is behind us. ?There are still many properties that need to be sold and the relatively high rate of distressed property sales is going to be with us for several years,? he said.? Distressed property sales are foreclosures or short sales, which are homes sold for a price less than the outstanding mortgage balance.

Here are some of the encouraging signs found in June?s market data:

  • The median sale price of all three types of homes has been increasing since the beginning of the year.? From January to June of this year, the median sale price for traditional homes (not foreclosures or short sales) increased from $209,400 to $229,000 for single-family homes, from $153,000 to $165,000 for town homes, and from $121,500 to $144,000 for condos.
  • The volume of sales has increased from January to June. For homes less than $140,000, sales increased from 797 to 982; for homes from $140,000 to $200,000, sales increased from 432 to 975; for homes from $200,000 to $300,000, sales increased from 336 to 982; and for homes more than $300,000, sales increased from 339 to 943.
  • As a percentage of all homes sold, the number of lower-priced homes decreased while the number of higher-priced homes increased. For homes less than $140,000, the percentage of total sales dropped from 42 percent in January to 25 percent in June. For homes more than $300,000, the percentage increased from 18 percent in January to 25 percent in June.
  • The $214,900 median price for a traditional (non-distressed) home in June 2012 is 3.3 percent higher than the $208,000 price in June 2011. That is significant because this marks the first time since February 2011 that the median price of a traditional home has been higher than the previous year.
  • St. Thomas? composite index uses nine data elements to track the health of the traditional, foreclosure and short-sale markets. The overall June index of 983 was the highest since September 2007, when it was 997.
  • The composite index that only measures foreclosures increased from 660 to 690 from May to June. There are indications that the foreclosure market is finding a bottom.
  • The inventory of homes on the market continues to be very low and the supply of lower-priced homes continues to fall. This lower inventory, coupled with record-low mortgage rates, is creating a very active market for lower-priced properties. Many of them receive multiple offers and are selling within days of their listing.

More details can be found on the Shenehon Center?s website.

Research for the monthly reports is conducted by Tousley and Dr. Thomas Hamilton, associate professor of real estate at the university. The index is available free via email from Tousley at hwtousley1@stthomas.edu.

Socato ? Blog Archive ? Parents blind to learning benefits

Posted: July 30th, 2012 | Author: admin | Filed under: Australian News | Comments Off

PARENTS who keep their children out of valuable early childhood education programs often do so because they see parental care as better.

This suggests evidence showing the benefits of preschool for a child?s development may not be getting through to families.

The Australian Institute of Family Studies is looking at why there are barriers to accessing early childhood education for some families, before a government promise for universal preschool access for four-year-olds by next year.

After comparing results from existing government data on early childhood education, AIFS senior research fellow Jennifer Baxter said more work was needed on why families were not using preschool to ensure universal access was delivered as planned.

?Parents often tell us the children?s non-attendance is related to the fact that there?s a parent at home,? she said.

?They say the child didn?t need it, there?s a parent at home, or they tell us something about prioritising parent care for the children.

?Certainly some families are telling us there are issues around access and affordability or appropriateness of the service (but) they are mentioned by a small minority.?

Dr Baxter and fellow researcher Kelly Hand presented their work at an AIFS conference in Melbourne last week, ahead of a full report for the Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations later this year.

Research has shown that participating in a quality early childhood education program has ongoing benefits for children, especially those from more disadvantaged backgrounds.

All states and territories are working towards giving children 15 hours a week of early childhood education, taught by a degree-qualified teacher, for 40 weeks in the year before they start school.

Dr Baxter said data from surveys taken in 2008 and 2009 showed indigenous children and children whose families were not native English-speakers were less likely to use preschool programs, as were those in outer regional, rural and socio-economically disadvantaged areas.

?We need to know why do we see these relationships and what can we actually do about it to help families out so children are accessing early childhood education,? Dr Baxter said.

?It?s the truly disadvantaged families that are likely to be the ones we are talking about here, where the children are missing out on early childhood education.?

Household income was not found to be significant, but children were more likely to be enrolled if their parents had achieved a high level of education, or if their primary carer was employed.

Dr Baxter and Ms Hand will soon start a fieldwork component of their study, asking families in more detail their reasons for keeping children out of early childhood education.

Data from the Australian Early Development Index, taken in 2009, found 11 per cent of children were not in preschool or long daycare, compared with 7 per cent from the Longitudinal Study of Australian Children.

Microsoft details the Touch Mouse's upcoming support for Windows 8 gestures

We already knew that Microsoft would be upgrading its Touch Mouse to support Windows 8 gestures, but the outfit never confirmed which finger movements, exactly, would be built in. Now, Redmond is explaining it all, even though the mouse won't actually get updated until Win8 goes on sale in late October. According to the company, you'll be able to swipe two fingers to the right to toggle between open programs, and two to the left to expose those Charms. Sliding three fingers up and down will allow you to use Semantic Zoom. (Naturally, you'll be able to swipe from side to side to move through the tiles on your Start screen, but you probably already guessed that.) We have a Touch Mouse here at Engadget HQ that we're just itching to update, but until those drivers drop three months from now, it seems we'll just have to find something else to keep us entertained.

DURHAM, N.C. -- Water pollution from surface coal mining has degraded more than 22 percent of streams and rivers in southern West Virginia to the point they may now qualify as impaired under state criteria, according to a new study by scientists at Duke and Baylor.

The study, published this week in the peer-reviewed journal Environmental Science & Technology, documents substantial losses in aquatic insect biodiversity and increases in salinity linked to sulfates and other pollutants in runoff from mines often located miles upstream.

"Our findings offer concrete evidence of the cumulative impacts surface mining is having on a regional scale," said Emily S. Bernhardt, associate professor of biogeochemistry at Duke's Nicholas School of the Environment. "The relationship is clear and direct. The more mining you have upstream, the higher the biological loss and salinity levels will be downstream, and the farther they will extend."

Numerous recent studies have demonstrated the water-quality problems caused at or near the site of individual surface coal mines, Bernhardt noted. She and her team "set out to understand how the large and growing number of surface mines is affecting water quality throughout Appalachia."

They used NASA satellite images and computer data to map the extent of surface mining taking place across a 12,000-square-mile area of the southern West Virginia coalfields between 1976 and 2005.

They found that companies had converted more than five percent of the land into mine sites and buried 480 miles of streams beneath adjacent valley fills during this period.

Chemical and biological data from 223 streams sampled by the West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection between 1997 and 2007 were combined with mapping to help the researchers determine that pollution runoff from the mines could substantially degrade more than 1,400 miles of streams in the region. That's four times the length of streams buried by the valley fills.

"It's important to recognize that surface coal mining pollution doesn't stop at mine-permit boundaries," said Brian D. Lutz, a postdoctoral associate in Bernhardt's lab.

"Our analysis suggests that mining only five percent of the land surface is degrading between 22 percent and 32 percent of the region's rivers," he said.

Substantial declines in insect diversity began to occur when companies had mined as little as one percent of upstream land, the analysis showed. In areas where companies had converted about five percent of the land into mines, sensitive species such as mayflies and stoneflies had vanished or declined to an extent that the streams would qualify as biologically impaired under criteria set by the state of West Virginia.

The designation means the streams could be placed on a list of waterways that the state must take steps to rehabilitate.

"What is so compelling is that we found many different types of organisms are lost downstream of surface coal mines, and most of them begin to disappear at similar levels of mining," said Ryan S. King, associate professor of biology at Baylor. "Our analysis shows that coal mining is leading to widespread declines in aquatic biodiversity in Appalachian streams."

Lutz and King co-authored the paper with Bernhardt. Other coauthors were John P. Fay, instructor of geospatial analysis at the Nicholas School; Catherine E. Carter, a 2010 master's graduate of the Nicholas School, now at TetraTech; Ashley M. Helton, postdoctoral associate in Duke's Department of Biology; John Amos of SkyTruth; and David Campagna, of Campagna & Associates.

The study was supported by unrestricted gifts in support of research from The Foundation for the Carolinas and the Sierra Club, and through a contract to Amos and Campagna from Appalachian Voices.

NBC draws ire for not streaming Olympics ceremony

NEW YORK (AP) ? A look at media coverage of the Summer Olympics:

Even before NBC signed on for its coverage of the Summer Olympics in London on Friday, it drew a storm online for its decision not to stream the opening ceremony digitally. Despite the grumbling, it's a decision that may pay off for the network.

NBC Universal has promised to stream live online every athletic competition in the Summer Games for the first time. But the opening and closing ceremonies were always planned to be shown on tape delay, a network spokesman said. Coverage began shortly before 8 p.m. on the East Coast, about the same time that spectators in London ? which is five hours ahead of New York time ? were filing out of Olympic Stadium.

NBC Sports spokesman Christopher McCloskey said the ceremonies "are complex entertainment spectacles that do not translate well online because they require context, which our award-winning production team will provide for the large prime-time audiences that gather together to watch them."

Many people took to Twitter to complain Friday that they felt cheated by the decision, and provided online links to other outlets, like the BBC, that were streaming the ceremony online.

The website for Business Insider said "boo" about NBC's decision and offered two links. The popular sports website Deadspin posted a link to the BBC stream and urged its followers to watch it as a way of sending NBC an obscene gesture.

CNN's Piers Morgan, who was tweeting details about the ceremony in the late afternoon, tweeted shortly before 7:30 p.m. ET: "Laughable that America is yet to start watching the Olympic ceremony on TV. Seriously."

But NBC executives will gladly trade the complaints for a repeat of what happened four years ago in Beijing.

The network similarly offered the opening ceremony then on tape delay and there were many complaints, although less widespread because of a less wired world. But all the talk about the ceremony in the hours before it was televised created a buzz, and the 34.9 million people who watched it was the largest opening ceremony audience in 12 years. NBC makes most of its money through its prime-time advertising, and the strong opening night ratings set a tone that continued throughout the Games.

NO RUSH: Did some of the Olympic trivia uncovered by NBC researchers hit the cutting room floor on Friday? NBC prime time hosts Bob Costas and Matt Lauer noted more than once that athletes were entering the stadium for the opening parade at a faster clip than normal.

UPCOMING: We'll know quickly whether swimmer Michael Phelps will make these games his personal gold mine, like he did in Beijing. Phelps' faceoff with fellow American Ryan Lochte in the 400 meter individual medley highlights Saturday's full opening day of competition.

Olympic Beach Volleyball: Bikinis Still Uniform Choice Despite ...

LONDON ? The Benny Hill theme plays over the loudspeaker at Horse Guards Parade, the crowd cheers and the raking crew scurries out to smooth over the footprints in the sand.

This is beach volleyball, British style.

The Olympics' sexiest sport opened with a raucous debut on Saturday, mixing in a little local flair with all of the more traditional trifles that have made the event one of the most sought-after tickets at the London Games (though Sir Paul McCartney managed to get one for the afternoon session).

A dance team in bathing suits ? skimpier for the birds than the blokes ? jiggled for the sold-out crowd during timeouts, while rock music nearly drowned out the pealing of Big Ben. And, much to the relief of the British tabloids, the athletes wore their traditional bikinis despite the chill in the air that left the sand at 67 degrees when the day started.

"There are so many people out here already, and it's only 10 o'clock in the morning," said Germany's Ilka Semmler, who with partner Katrin Holtwick beat Hana Klapalova and Lenka Hajeckova of the Czech Republic in straight sets. "It's really, really, really nice."

Located just inside the gate used by the queen ? and only the queen ? to ride up to Buckingham Palace, the beach volleyball venue offers views of the London Eye, the Big Ben clock tower and 10 Downing Street. But the real excitement this fortnight is inside the stadium, where tickets are scarce for virtually all of the thrice-daily sessions.

McCartney attended the first half of the afternoon session, blending into a crowd that was content to samba in the aisles or re-enact their favorite slapstick routines along the concourse. (One fan, who had taken to chasing and being chased by a pair of blonde women every time the Benny Hill theme music came on, collided with a volunteer during the routine; neither was hurt.)

"What I expected was probably about 30 notches lower," said Britain's Steven Grotowski, who with partner John Garcia-Thompson lost 21-19, 21-13 to Joshua Binstock and Martin Reader of Canada.

"To be out there on the court, it feels like all 15,000 people were cheering for us," said Grotowski, a native of London who has been living in Boynton Beach, Fla. "It was amazing to look out there and see seas of people supporting us. It was a really special experience. I don't think there's anything that prepares you for something like this."

Americans Kerri Walsh Jennings and Misty May-Treanor, who are trying for a third consecutive gold medal, were scheduled to play in the final match on Saturday night against Australian rivals Tasmin Hinchley and five-time Olympian Natalie Cook. The No. 2 U.S. men's team of Sean Rosenthal and Jake Gibb also were scheduled to play, taking on South Africa's Freedom Chiya and Grant Goldschmit.

Defending men's champions Todd Rogers and Phil Dalhausser of the United States play their first match on Sunday, as does the No. 2 U.S. women's team of April Ross and Jen Kessy.

Play began Saturday morning with an upset in the first match, when Russians Anastasia Vasina and Anna Vozakova beat Beijing bronze medalists Zhang Xi and Xue Chen 18-21, 21-14, 16-14. In the men's openers, Latvians Aleksandrs Samoilovs and Ruslans Sorokins edged Grzegorz Fijalek and Mariusz Prudel of Poland 12-21, 21-15, 15-12 and Germans Julius Brink and Jonas Reckermann beat Konstantin Semenov and Serguei Prokopiev of Russia in straight sets.

In the afternoon, Sascha Heyer and Seba Chevallier of Switzerland upset China's Wu Penggen and Xu Linyin 18-21, 21-16, 15-12; Marketa Slukova and Kristyna Kolocova beat Beijing quarterfinalists Stefanie and Doris Schwaiger of Austria 10-21, 21-13, 15-13; and Brazilian favorites Larissa and Juliana beat Elodie Li Yuk Lo and Natacha Rigobert ? Mauritius' first-ever beach volleyball competitors ? 21-5, 21-10 in a mere 30 minutes.

But the star of the sport ? so far, at least ? has been the venue.

The public address announcer played the part of disco DJ, calling for cheers so loud that the prime minister might hear at his residence next door. When the wave circled the grandstand, he gave it at least as much attention as his athletic play-by-play, following it from Downing Street to St. James's Park and back around to Horse Guards Road, where a royal sentry still protects the sovereign's exclusive entrance to Buckingham Palace.

"What can I say? It's the best spot we could have chosen in London," said Samoilovs, who has a bushy mane of hair that earned him the nickname "The Lion King."

"All the other athletes are jealous" of the venue, he said. "It's the best one ever."

Talk of cold weather had created panic in the British press that the female players would go for long-sleeves instead of the standard bikinis ? a longtime but little used rule in international volleyball. But the Russians and Chinese were in the two-piece swimsuits for the opening match, and the Germans and Czechs did the same when they played an hour later.

But the beach party atmosphere was augmented by the dancers, who filled the downtime with kicklines and even one tango that ended up with the dance partners flopping suggestively in the sand.

No wonder most in the crowd of 15,000 ? the biggest-ever Olympic beach volleyball venue ? had trouble tearing themselves away.

A half-hour after the last match ended, a voice came over the loudspeaker imploring them to leave.

"Have a safe journey home," he said, "or to the pub."

5 Skincare Tips To Prevent Dark Circles Under Eyes ? Beauty ...

When you have to deal with the possibility of dark circles under eyes, you may want to do something to prolong the inevitable.

Here are a few tips to help you prevent those dreaded eye dark circles.

1. Rubbing your skin, especially around your eyes, has a similar effect as the warm water. Sure, it is not a lot of damage, but it will accumulate over time. You will eventually lose the elasticity in your skin if you are rubbing on it. You should pat dry with a very soft towel to avoid doing any damage at all to your skin.

2. Everyone needs 8 hours of sleep every night to rejuvenate their skin. This will help your skin look its best. Not only does the sleep help your body recharge and help your skin to stay healthy, in fact having your eyes closed is a great way to prevent dark circles. Do not become Rip Van Winkle here; just get enough sleep every night.

3. Using chemicals on your face is always a bad idea. If you must wear any makeup at all, you need to make sure that it is natural. Organic products might cost a little bit more due to the organics boom thing happening now, but your face will thank you for it in another ten years. Teen Doing Well 2 Years After Stem Cell Windpipe Transplant

WEDNESDAY, July 25 (HealthDay News) -- Two years after he became the first child to receive a stem cell-supported trachea (windpipe) transplant, a 13-year-old boy is able to breathe normally, has grown about four inches taller, does not require any anti-rejection drugs and has returned to school.

Ciaran Finn-Lynch, born with a structural defect of his large airway, underwent the transplant in March 2010 at Great Ormond Street Hospital in London. After his windpipe was removed, it was replaced by a windpipe from a deceased donor in Italy.

The windpipe was stripped of the donor's cells down to the inert structure of collagen. Tissue from the lining of Finn-Lynch's windpipe was implanted in the new windpipe to kick-start the growth of a lining in the new windpipe.

The surgeons laced the transplanted windpipe with Finn-Lynch's own bone marrow stem cells to prevent his body from rejecting the new organ. The teen also received compounds to promote the growth and differentiation of cells within the new windpipe.

It was the first attempt to grow stem cells within the body of a child who had this type of operation, rather than in a laboratory, according to an article published online July 25 in The Lancet.

"Since the treatment plan for Ciaran was devised in an emergency, we used a novel mix of techniques that have proved successful in treating other conditions," paper co-author Martin Birchall, a professor of laryngology at University College London's Ear Institute, said in a journal news release. "To minimize delays, we bypassed the usual process of growing cells in the laboratory over a period of weeks, and instead opted to grow the cells inside the body, in a similar manner to treatments currently being (tested) with patients who have had heart attacks."

He added that more research is needed on stem cells grown deliberately inside the body, rather than grown first in a laboratory over a long time. "This research should help to convert one-off successes such as this into more widely available clinical treatments for thousands of children with severe tracheal problems worldwide," he said.

How mums' low-protein diet predisposes offspring to adulthood - Sify

Earlier studies have shown that the offspring of mothers on a low-protein diet are more likely to develop hypertension as adults ? now scientists know how.

In a study in rats, Drs. Gao, Yallampalli, and Yallampalli of the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston, found that the high maternal testosterone levels associated with a low-protein diet are caused by reduced activity of an enzyme that inactivates testosterone, allowing more testosterone to reach the fetus and increase the offspring?s susceptibility to adulthood hypertension.

Fetal programming is a term used to describe the impact of maternal stress on an unborn child?s physical characteristics at birth, as well as its long-term health. The placenta is thought to be a major contributor to fetal programming due to its critical roles in hormone production and nutrient transport, as well as its susceptibility to environmental disruptions.

Recently, a study found that protein restriction doubles the plasma testosterone levels in pregnant rats. Elevated testosterone levels are associated with pregnancy-related complications such as preeclampsia and polycystic ovarian syndrome in humans, and emerging evidence suggests that testosterone may play a role in fetal programming of hypertension.

Gao et al. hypothesized that the increased testosterone levels were caused either by increased activity of an enzyme that produces testosterone or by decreased activity of an enzyme that reduces testosterone, specifically Hsd17b2, which converts testosterone to a less potent androgen, androstenedione.

The team found that Hsd17b2 expression in rats was affected by protein restriction in two parts of the placenta. It was increased in the junctional zone, which is responsible for hormone production, but was reduced in the labyrinth zone, which is essential for nutrient transport from mother to fetus and also acts as a protective barrier.

Based on this novel finding, Gao et al. propose that the reduction in Hsd17b2 expression in the protective labyrinth zone may allow more testosterone to reach the fetus and play a role in fetal programming of hypertension.

The finding that Hsd17b2 was the only enzyme for testosterone production affected by gestational protein restriction suggests an important role for Hsd17b2 in regulating the testosterone levels at the maternal-fetal interface.

But the researchers noted that further research is needed to determine its exact functions.

US eases sanctions on Myanmar in rare difference with Aung San Suu Kyi

Last month, Aung San Suu Kyi?advised foreign companies not to invest in the state-run Myanma Oil and Gas Enterprise until it became more accountable and open.

In what appeared to be a rare snub by American lawmakers for Myanmar parliamentarian and long-time detainee Aung San Suu Kyi, the United States on Wednesday gave a go-ahead for American businesses to invest in Myanmar's oil and gas sectors ? the largest easing of sanctions in the past 15 years.

?The United States is easing restrictions to allow US companies to responsibly do business in Burma," said President Obama, using the old name for Myanmar as Ms. Aung San Suu Kyi does.

Aung San Suu Kyi does support sanctions-lifting by Western countries and investment by Western business in keeping with the reforms undertaken by Myanmar's nominally-civilian government in office since March 2011. But she has expressed caution regarding the Myanmar state-run energy company, long regarded as a cesspit of corruption with tight links to the country's abusive military. Last month the National League for Democracy (NLD) parliamentarian warned that ?the Myanma Oil and Gas Enterprise (MOGE) ? with which all foreign participation in the energy sector takes place through joint venture arrangements, lacks both transparency and accountability at present.?

The US and some other Western governments have long taken their cue on Myanmar policy from Aung San Suu Kyi, but the Obama administration's decision on investment runs against that well-worn grain.

The US has likely taken what it sees as a pragmatic pro-business policy decision based on what it views as a combination meeting of strategic interests (countering China) and rewards as promised for the Myanmar government undertaking reforms.

The new US policy also allows American companies to bed down with MOGE, though they will be required to report annually to the State Department with evidence that their investments factor in workers' rights and the environment.

Reacting to the US announcement today, Aung San Suu Kyi told AFP that the move was ?nothing significant,? and wondered whether the US had sought some form of improved transparency from MOGE prior to the announcement.

Aung San Suu Kyi was recently-chided by the Myanmar government for continuing to call the country ?Burma,? the name of choice for opponents of Myanmar's military dictatorship, which issued a decree in 1989 changing the country's name from Burma to Myanmar in a move still controversial due to its arbitrary genesis.

The announcement came just hours after Ambassador Derek Mitchell took up post in Myanmar, the first American emissary to hold that position since 1990, when the NLD famously won a national election but was denied office by the military junta.
