Storm's cost may hit $50B; rebuilding to ease blow

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Superstorm Sandy will end up causing about $20 billion in property damages and $10 billion to $30 billion more in lost business, according to IHS Global Insight, a forecasting firm.

In the long run, the devastation the storm inflicted on New York City and other parts of the Northeast will barely nick the U.S. economy. That's the view of economists who say a slightly slower economy in coming weeks will likely be matched by reconstruction and repairs that will contribute to growth over time.

The short-term blow to the economy, though, could subtract about 0.6 percentage point from U.S. economic growth in the October-December quarter, IHS says. Retailers, airlines and home construction firms will likely lose some business.

The storm cut power to about 7 million homes, shut down 70 percent of East Coast oil refineries and inflicted worse-than-expected damage in the New York metro area. That area produces about 10 percent of U.S. economic output.

New York City was all but closed off by car, train and air. The superstorm overflowed the city's waterfront, flooded the financial district and subway tunnels and cut power to hundreds of thousands. Power is expected to be fully restored in Manhattan and Brooklyn within four days.

Most homeowners who suffered losses from flooding won't be able to benefit from their insurance policies. Standard homeowner policies don't cover flood damage, and few homeowners have flood insurance.

But Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac said they will offer help to borrowers whose homes were damaged or destroyed, who live in designated disaster areas and whose loans the mortgage giants own or guarantee. Among other options, mortgage servicers will be allowed to reduce the monthly payments of affected homeowners or require no payments from them temporarily.

Across U.S. industries, disruptions will slow the economy temporarily. Some restaurants and stores will draw fewer customers. Factories may shut down or hold shorter shifts because of a short-term drop in customer demand.

Some of those losses won't be easily made up. Restaurants that lose two or three days of business, for example, won't necessarily experience a rebound later. And money spent to repair a home may lead to less spending elsewhere.

With some roads in the Northeast impassable after the storm, drivers won't be filling up as much. That will slow demand for gasoline. Pump prices, which had been declining before the storm, will likely keep slipping. The national average for a gallon of regular fell by about a penny Tuesday, to $3.53 ? more than 11 cents lower than a week ago.

Shipping and business travel has been suspended in areas of the Northeast. More than 15,000 flights across the Northeast and the world have been grounded, and it will take days for some passengers to get where they're going.

On Tuesday, more than 6,000 flights were canceled, according to the flight-tracking service FlightAware. More than 500 flights scheduled for Wednesday were also canceled.

The three big New York airports were closed Tuesday by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. New York has the nation's busiest airspace, so cancellations there drastically affect travel in other cities.

Economists noted that the hit to the economy in the short run was worsened by the size of the population centers the storm hit.

"Sandy hit a high-population-density area with a lot of expensive homes," said Beata Caranci, deputy chief economist at TD Bank.

Hurricane damage to homes, businesses and roads reduces U.S. wealth. But it doesn't subtract from the government's calculation of economic activity.

By contrast, rebuilding and restocking by businesses and consumers add to the nation's gross domestic product ? the broadest gauge of economic production. GDP measures all goods and services produced in the United States.

Paul Ashworth, chief U.S. economist at Capital Economics, expects the storm to shave 0.1 to 0.2 percentage point from annual economic growth in the October-December quarter. He thinks the economy will grow at an annual rate of 1.5 percent to 2 percent in the fourth quarter. It expanded at a 2 percent annual rate last quarter.

But Ashworth says any losses this quarter should be made up later as rebuilding boosts sales at building supply stores and other companies.

"People will load up on whatever they need to make repairs ? roofing, dry wall, carpeting ? to deal with the damage," he says.

In the short run, Caranci said the economic damage could be heaviest for small businesses that lack the money and other resources to withstand lost sales.

"It will remain to be seen how long disruptions to electricity and infrastructure persist," she said.

But she noted that the storm should give a boost to the construction industry, which shed millions of workers after the housing bust. Many who lost construction jobs were skilled employees with disproportionately high pay, and the loss of those jobs hit the economy hard.

Major retailers began trying Tuesday to ramp up their operations before the critical holiday shopping period.

Sears Holdings Corp., which operates Kmart and Sears, said 80 of its stores were still closed as of midday Tuesday, down from 187 Monday. Wal-Mart Stores Inc., the world's biggest retailer, said it was working to reopen the 168 stores it closed. And Darden Restaurants Inc., parent company of Olive Garden and Red Lobster, by Tuesday afternoon had reopened roughly 160 of the 260 restaurants it closed Monday.

Retailers collect up to 40 percent of their annual revenue in November and December. Retailers, excluding restaurants, could lose at least $25 billion in sales this week, estimates Burt Flickinger III of retail consultancy Strategic Resource Group. Because of the storm, he's reduced his forecast for holiday sales to a 2.1 percent increase over last year from the 3.2 percent increase he had predicted earlier.

Reopening is often difficult after a storm. New York City's subways and buses remained closed Tuesday, making it hard for employees to get to work. Macy's and Saks Fifth Avenue flagship stores stayed closed Tuesday ? bad news for those retailers, because major department stores can derive 10 percent of annual sales from their Manhattan locations.

Still, those stores that could open for business did. A Westside Market in Manhattan remained open 24 hours a day throughout the storm, even though only about 20 percent of workers managed to show up Monday and Tuesday.

"They found a way to get here ? I don't know how," store manager Jay Bilone said.

Insured losses from the superstorm will likely total $5 billion to $10 billion, the forecasting firm Eqecat estimates. Insurance losses are typically a fraction of the overall cost to the economy.

Chubb, Allstate and Travelers are the insurers most likely to suffer losses, said Greg Locraft, an analyst at Morgan Stanley. Those companies claim a major share of the affected areas.

"As an insurance event, Sandy is going to be a blip on the balance sheet," said Duncan Ellis, U.S. property practice leader at Marsh, the insurance broker. "2012 has been a relatively catastrophe-free year."

Economists expect actual property damages from Hurricane Sandy to exceed those caused last year by Hurricane Irene, which cost $15.8 billion. Irene had little effect on the nation's growth.

Sandy will likely be among the 10 costliest hurricanes in U.S. history. It would still be far below the worst ? Hurricane Katrina, which cost $108 billion and caused 1,200 deaths in 2005.

But "there is every reason to believe that the hurricane won't kick the legs out of an already-fragile US economy," Caranci said.

Political risk seen driving up Italian costs at five-year debt sale

MILAN (Reuters) - Italy will probably have to accept higher borrowing costs on the new five-year bond it is offering later on Tuesday because growing fears of domestic political instability are making investors edgy.

A weekend threat by former premier Silvio Berlusconi to bring down the government led by technocrat Mario Monti pushed up Italian long-term yields on Monday.

Monti dismissed fears that his government could fall but investors saw Berlusconi's warning as a wake-up call to factor in more volatility in the run-up to a general election due by April 2013.

"The treasury is likely to pay a higher yield on the new five-year benchmark, but it will put on a brave face and carry on with it," said Matteo Regesta, bond strategist at BNP Paribas in London.

"Political uncertainty will take its toll on Italian debt."

Adding to the confusion, preliminary results from a local election in Sicily showed strong gains for the anti-establishment 5-Star Movement of comic Beppe Grillo. The island has a long history of mismanagement and Fitch downgraded its credit rating to two notches above junk on Monday.

The Italian treasury will offer up to 4 billion euros of a new five-year BTP bond maturing November 1, 2017, paying a coupon of 3.5 percent, down from 4.75 percent of the current benchmark. It will also sell 10-year debt for up to 3 billion euros.

Late on Monday the new five-year bond offered a yield around 4 percent on the unofficial grey market and the rate is expected to rise further on Tuesday morning as investors sell the old paper to make room for the new bond.

Analysts say the treasury is prepared to pay higher yields to sell the maximum targeted amount of 4 billion euros. At a similar auction in late September, it paid 4.09 percent to sell five-year paper.

The yield rise on this maturity however is expected to be limited and 10-year borrowing costs may even come out a tad lower than a month ago because the treasury is selling a lower amount and is reopening an existing bond offer.

"The market will have to get used to higher volatility as Italy approaches elections next spring, but I don't expect anything dramatic," said Chiara Manenti, bond analyst at Intesa SanPaolo.

On Monday Italian 10-year yields rose 9 basis points to just above 5 percent, going back to levels not seen since October 12.

The treasury paid a yield of 5.24 percent on the 10-year maturity at a similar auction one month ago.

The successful mid-October sale of a BTP Italia inflation-linked bond, which raised a whopping 18 billion euros, has temporarily eased funding pressure for Italy before year-end.

If the treasury sells its maximum targeted amount on Tuesday, it will have covered just over 90 percent of its borrowing needs for the year.

For those who are nonetheless trying to hire internet hosting means fairly than spend inside of your private in-house IT to receive your internet site up and functioning there will be more channels that can supply choices to purchasing bodily program place straight from the internet hosting supplier and that have specific charm to scaled-down scale customers.

Resellers

For anyone even now planning to hire server place you can find the extra opportunity of employing an internet hosting reseller alternatively than shopping for instantly through the internet hosting supplier. A reseller will fork over money for up internet hosting source, disk place and bandwidth wholesale and after that promote on internet hosting offers to personal customers by dividing up these means. They are able to include a layer of aid to their furnishing should they be expert resellers and several will include things like their unique branded deal with panels to permit valued clients to configure their internet hosting platforms.

You?ll discover expert reseller online businesses on the markets, but there?s also a lot of organisations that possibly provide internet hosting being an add-on to a different program, along the lines of electronic media agencies who establish or manage web site online sites, or that should spend money on their own individual internet hosting useful resource and find out it affordable to purchase wholesale after which resell the surplus they never use to counterbalance their own individual bills.

The internet hosting offers on feature from resellers can include each shared or devoted internet hosting platforms as resellers can both offer with a specific amount of shared disk room or total person servers. The commonest reseller deals, even so, include shared internet hosting as well as in distinct Digital Non-public Servers (VPS) the place the shared servers use digital partitions to generate unique functioning environments.

Reseller deals could in fact be especially valuable for customers that don?t possess the abilities or source to operate with their underlying support supplier in keeping their system. They?ll, based for the offer, haven?t any will need to be concerned, immediate or indirectly, in keeping any for the components and infrastructure their selves. The reseller can appropriately work as a canal amongst the customer together with the company supplier, both operating along with them to take care of any concerns that crop up on behalf in the customer, or performing for a center gentleman with whom the consumer might notice simpler to offer as opposed to underlying provider supplier, particularly when the customer isn?t really overly self-confident with their very own technical recognition. For the people who do get a little more concerned, the packaging of reseller internet hosting could in fact be considerably less esoteric and simpler and easier for personal and minimal home business end users to grasp earning use, one example is, of very easy user interface interfaces for configuration improvements.

On top of that, the reseller-support dynamic is effective nicely wherever the reseller is included in other features of the client?s electronic bundle, which include the aforementioned electronic company who?d generate and preserve a web page after which liaise considering the internet hosting supplier to control the internet hosting on the blog as aspect of the way more holistic and joined up tactic.

The twin negatives of reseller internet hosting, but nevertheless, are that it could possibly introduce an extra layer of charge and, for all those who do possess the technical consciousness, the center gentleman is actually an alternative levels of conversation when guidance is necessary. As an alternative, tech savvy clientele especially, could desire to bargain immediately with assistance supplier to take care of situations further expeditiously.

Cloud Internet hosting

A more recent solution with the extra customary concept of leasing a part of a server would be the strategy of leasing area inside a cloud of internet hosting useful resource. This provider depends to the internet hosting supplier pooling the bodily methods they?ve got ? disk place, bandwidth etcetera ? and furnishing clients a virtualized system in this virtualized pool of computing useful resource on which to host their resource site. The buyer would not lease place on, or maybe the entirety of, one bodily server hence, and in its place their webpage will in fact be drawing source from the community of numerous bodily servers. The environments by which their internet hosting platforms exist should be distinctive in a very digital sensation relatively than the usual bodily a person, by using digital partitions (identical to VPS). Buyers may even go a particular move additional and lease a complete community of digital servers to sort a Digital Details Heart (VDC) to fulfill any in their hosting or broader venture internet hosting expectations.

Cloud internet hosting sits in the Infrastructure as the Provider (IaaS) band of cloud products and services and its dynamics imply that internet hosting source is offered extra just like an utility which may be tapped into as and when it is really desired. The virtualized internet hosting platforms are often scaled to go well with the desire for sources since they are freed of bodily constraints as well as the shopper really want only buy the source they want as and whenever they utilize it; negating the squandered ability that would or else end result from both in-house internet hosting or rented disk area (notably focused servers). What is added, the economies of scale the internet hosting supplier generates by jogging big scale info middle assets may very well be handed right down to the customer indicating that cloud internet hosting may become a cost-effective way to the shopper to obtain the actual amounts of useful resource which they have.

Whichever your finances, the technical needs of your respective web-site, your abilities and also your anticipations there exists most likely to become an internet hosting opportunity about the industry that fits. Finally, internet hosting deals will range from a single supplier with the up coming nonetheless it remains very important for being informed within the numerous routes that you just can go down and also the choices you can realize whenever you get there.

Bugged phone deepens controversy over Italian quake

The story isn't over yet. Last Monday, six Italian seismologists and a civil protection official were sentenced to six years in prison for manslaughter, for falsely reassuring the public that a major earthquake would not happen. But two recorded phone calls involving a more senior official suggest that the whole story has not been told about meetings held in the week prior to the earthquake and after the event.

Wiretap evidence suggests that Guido Bertolaso, then a chief of civil protection, ordered one of the defendants to issue a reassuring statement. A newly released audio recording also appears to show Bertolaso trying to conceal information in the aftermath of the quake.

Franco Coppi, who legally represents Giulio Selvaggi, one of the convicted seismologists, calls Bertolaso the "great absent member of the trial". "All these scientists were sent to L'Aquila with a precise task," he told New Scientist. "Given that they are considered responsible for insufficient communication, it would have been important as well to consider what mandate Bertolaso gave them."

The case relates to a magnitude-6.3 earthquake that struck the Italian town of L'Aquila on 6 April 2009, killing more than 300 people. A week before, the six seismologists met to discuss the risk of a quake, following months of small tremors. They concluded it was possible a major quake was on the way, but the evidence was inconclusive. Later, a civil protection official, Bernardo De Bernardinis, gave a statement saying there was little or no risk.

The trial was not about the seismologists' failure to predict the earthquake, as earthquake prediction is currently impossible. Rather it was about the failure to communicate the small but real risk of a major quake. Reassured by the statements, people stayed indoors instead of sleeping outside, putting them in more danger.

Caught on tape

Bertolaso, De Bernardinis's superior, had previously his phone tapped as part of an unrelated investigation by the Italian authorities. In January this year the Italian newspaper La Repubblica obtained a recording of a key conversation between Bertolaso and one of his officials (listen to it on YouTube).

In the recording, translated here, Bertolaso says: "I told him [De Bernardinis] to schedule a meeting in L'Aquila about this story of this swarm quake[?] to immediately silence any imbecile's allegations, concerns and so on." He continues: "That is a media operation, you understand? So they, [?] the leading experts of earthquakes, they will say: it is normal, these are phenomena that often occur, it is better to have one hundred shocks of the 4th grade on the Richter scale rather than silence, because one hundred shocks release energy and so there will never be a shock that really hurts."

Bertolaso now says he was repeating statements made about earthquakes in the past. "These types of statements have always been made in the 10 years that I have held this post. But obviously, I didn't make them, all those who participated in scientific seismic risk activities made them."

Seismologists contacted by New Scientist say the reasoning is incorrect. Small tremors on a fault do not necessarily mean a large one is coming, but neither do they necessarily make a future large earthquake less likely.

Later in the recording Bertolaso adds: "And also say that the meeting is organised not because we are scared and worried, but because we want to reassure the people. And instead of you and me talking to the population, we make the top scientists in the field of seismology talk."

Bartolaso denies telling the seismologists what to say. "The scientific committee is absolutely autonomous and independent," he told New Scientist.

After the tape emerged, Science reported that Bertolaso was also under investigation in relation to the l'Aquila earthquake. However, he was not added to the then ongoing trial, and has not been charged.

Political pressure

A new wiretap recording was published last week, again by La Repubblica. It features Bertolaso talking to Enzo Boschi, one of the convicted seismologists, on 9 April 2009 ? three days after the quake. In it he appears to order Boschi to conceal information.

Bertolaso says he has been asked about the risk of further shocks, and says: "This afternoon there will be a meeting of the Great Hazard Commission at the INGV [National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology]. So I said that the meeting is aimed at this. It is obvious that the truth about the situation cannot be told." Boschi told New Scientist that the meeting was to assess the likelihood that a nearby dam on Lake Campotosto could collapse. Models determined there was no risk of this and the expert group decided there was no need to raise the alarm. In the event, the dam held.

In the recording, Bertolaso later says: "At the end you'll file a press release with the usual stuff that you can say on the subject, on the potential of a new one [earthquake], and you won't mention the real reason for this meeting. All right?"

Rowdy fans take to streets after Giants' victory

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ? Thousands of baseball fans took to the streets of San Francisco to celebrate the Giants' World Series victory, with revelers gathering on corners, in parks and at watering holes ? and some turning rowdy.

Fans across the city left their televisions and rushed outside, greeting diners, bar patrons and other merrymakers Sunday night after the Giants defeated the Detroit Tigers 4-3 to sweep the Series for their second title in three years.

Some violence and vandalism was reported, with revelers setting a public transit bus on fire, flipping over a vehicle and breaking the windows of several businesses and vehicles, KTVU-TV reported (http://bit.ly/TiYiTi ).

Fans also lit bonfires, fueling them with couches, signs and newspaper racks. Firefighters had to be escorted in by riot police to fight some of the fires.

Police made arrests, although the exact number was unknown. A call to a police spokesman by The Associated Press on Monday morning wasn't immediately returned.

At Polk and Bush streets in the city's Polk Gulch neighborhood, hundreds of fans sprayed champagne, set of off firecrackers and blocked traffic for at least two hours after the game.

Several blocks away, police clad in riot gear looked on as revelers danced around Civic Center plaza where they watched the game on the Jumbotron.

The thousands of fans assembled there exploded in a roar with the final out.

Anthony Yos, 10, hugged his brother Luciano Yos, 15 and the two danced in an embrace with their parents.

"This is the greatest thing," Anthony said with a smile that could go no wider. "The Giants are my favorite team."

Someone in the crowd launched fireworks a few minutes after the game and the park was awash with fans, strangers hugging strangers and wine bottles and marijuana cigarettes being freely passed through the crowd despite a heavy police presence.

"This is San Francisco, "said Laura Chu. "We know how to party."

Sara Vivas brought her 6-year-old daughter Briana Cepeda from Oakland to view the game and join the celebration. They were both clad head-to-toe in Giants garb.

"This is something she will remember forever," Sara said.

Bars of all stripes, from the Castro to Chinatown were packed with supporters of the beloved Giants.

So-called pedicabs whisked fans down roads blocked to traffic and revelers enjoyed a New Year's Eve-like freedom to roam up and down streets usually clogged with traffic.

Mayor Edwin Lee announced the ticker-tape parade would be held Wednesday at 11 a.m., down Market Street to Civic Center Plaza

"The rain in Detroit couldn't dampen the drive, talent and determination of the San Francisco Giants team tonight. Once again, the Giants brought our City together as we all cheered on our hometown heroes to another remarkable World Series victory," he said.

The 2010 parade drew hundreds of thousands fans, who lined the streets of downtown San Francisco. The parade ends at City Hall.

The party started early in Civic Center park, with many showing up hours before the 5 p.m. game on a nice Indian Summer day in San Francisco.

The city's ubiquitous food trucks did a brisk business and drummers of all types beat their instruments throughout the game.

"Where else in the world do you want to be tonight," replied Dave Wormald of Toronto. Wormald and two other colleagues were in town for a business meeting and were watching the game at their hotel when they decided to embark for City Hall.

"This is the place to be," said Jim Vliet, Wormald's colleague.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ? The Giants' championship formula is a familiar one, just with new faces all over the diamond two years later: stellar starting pitching backed by a shut-down bullpen, a late-season surge and a manager making all the right moves.

San Francisco captured its second World Series title in three seasons with a stunning sweep of the Tigers, and only catcher Buster Posey was in the lineup for the Game 5 clincher in 2010 at Texas and also the finale at Comerica Park in 2012.

"We're just happy right now," Posey said. "It's an unbelievable feeling."

Two of the four games against Detroit were started and won by a pair of pitchers not even on the World Series roster in 2010, and in Ryan Vogelsong's case he wasn't even in the majors back then.

The only regular still around from that team is Posey, and the catcher had to rebound from devastating ankle and leg injuries sustained in a home-plate collision in late May 2011 to put together an MVP-caliber season and become the NL batting champ. He played far more than anybody envisioned his body would allow.

This time, a couple of bench warmers from that last October run shined for San Francisco ? MVP Pablo Sandoval and Game 1 winner Barry Zito. The lefty Zito was left off the postseason roster for all three rounds in 2010.

"Just as a player, certainly you want to play on a team that wins the World Series. And to go out there and contribute, there's nothing like that," Zito said. "We were very adamant that we have to step on their throats. We saw what they did to New York."

Marco Scutaro and Hunter Pence were this year's midseason additions, with Scutaro following up Cody Ross in 2010 to earn NL championship series MVP honors. While Scutaro produced the timely hits, including a go-ahead single with two outs in the 10th inning of Sunday's 4-3 win, Pence did plenty and became the motivational speaker of this group. He reminded his teammates to keep the focus even when they jumped out to a surprising 3-0 Series lead against the Tigers.

These Giants showed they could rally back ? again and again ? and also thrive when playing out in front.

They fell behind 2-0 to the Cincinnati Reds in the division series, then became the first team in major league history to rally back in a five-game series by winning three straight road games. They did it again against the defending champion St. Louis Cardinals, erasing a 3-1 deficit thanks largely to Zito's Game 5 victory at Busch Stadium that sent the Giants back to the Bay Area to finish it off in San Francisco.

Six victories in six elimination games.

"The thing that made this team so special is just playing as a team, caring for each other," Pence said. "We had our backs against the wall and we knew it wasn't going to be easy. It's not supposed to be. That was one of our mottos, and we went out there to enjoy every minute of it and it was hard-earned. Just an incredible, incredible group of guys that fought for each other."

San Francisco ended the season on a seven-game winning streak.

Reliever George Kontos summed it up the best he could in one Twitter post late Sunday: "WORLD.....SERIES.....CHAMPS!!!! That's all that needs to be said... This team is special.... We did what no other team could."

Much like that 2010 team of "castoffs and misfits" as they referred to themselves, manager Bruce Bochy had to make some tough calls. He moved struggling starter Tim Lincecum to the bullpen, and he became a dominant reliever. Another spot-on move by Bochy, who became just the 23rd manager to win two or more World Series titles.

Nobody figured the Giants would leave AT&T Park with a 2-0 lead Thursday night for the Motor City and not have to come back home for a Game 6, or 7 for that matter.

Bochy, for one, is tired of hearing people call it luck.

"For us to play like we did against this great club, I couldn't be prouder of these guys," Bochy said. "To be world champions in two out of the last three years, it's amazing. Believe me, I know how difficult it is to get here, and I couldn't be prouder of a group of guys that were not going to be denied."

When the Giants take to Market Street in downtown San Francisco for Wednesday's Halloween championship parade, there will be no costumes needed. Brian Wilson, whose season ended in April when he needed Tommy John elbow surgery, and the man who finished off the clincher in his place by striking out the side Sunday on 15 pitches ? Sergio Romo ? are still sporting those dark postseason beards that have made these two such huge hits.

Along with their pitching, of course.

When it comes to pitching, Giants general manager Brian Sabean has never wavered. He has won more often than not by building around a balanced and versatile staff.

And all five starters are under contract heading into 2013.

A couple of big decisions facing Sabean are whether to re-sign Scutaro and center fielder Angel Pagan. It's unclear whether the Giants will consider giving Melky Cabrera a second chance after the All-Star game MVP was suspended Aug. 15 for a positive testosterone test and then not added to the NLCS roster once he was eligible to return.

Sandoval, the Kung Fu Panda, earned Series MVP honors after sparking his club with that three-homer outing in a Game 1 win against Justin Verlander and Co. He batted .369 this postseason with five doubles, six homers and 13 RBIs. That's after he was benched for four of the five games in 2010, when he hit .176 with two RBIs.

In three mighty swings last Wednesday night, he showed how far he has come since then. Even after a pair of stints on the disabled list this season, one for a broken hamate bone in his hand that required surgery.

"You know, I still can't believe that game. It's the game of your dreams. You don't want to wake up," the 26-year-old Sandoval said.

The Giants again will ask Sandoval to shape up this offseason ? and he is on board. Sandoval wants to be at his best not only for San Francisco but also to play for Venezuela in next spring's third World Baseball Classic.

Zito's turnaround is just as noteworthy. The left-hander, who signed a $126 million, seven-year contract before the 2007 season, went 15-8 for his best season since moving across the bay from the Oakland Athletics, where he won the 2002 AL Cy Young Award.

The Giants won Zito's last 14 starts, and he didn't lose after Aug. 2 against the Mets.

"I think there's a lot of learning that goes on in life away from the ball field," Zito said. "To go through it on the big stage ... the lows are lower, but I've changed the way I think about a lot of things."

Zito will be part of an experienced rotation heading into 2013, led by ace Matt Cain.

Cain's season began with a hefty new contract, then only got better with the first perfect game in franchise history June 13, the start in July's All-Star win that sealed home field for the National League, and then another championship.

"What we just did these last couple months is a pretty full year, and something that I'm going to enjoy definitely sitting down and watching at the end of the year," Cain said.

Scutaro was only around for part of it, but with the remarkable numbers he put up since coming from the Colorado Rockies on July 27 nobody would know any better.

"It's what you work for all season," Scutaro said. "I don't even know what to say right now. We just won the World Series. It's still priceless."

Highly Effective Methods of Therapy Relating to Symptoms of Drug ...

The symptoms of drug abuse are usually unknown by the individual in the beginning but can be noticed in their most guileless state when the problem worsens. The use of illicit medications is first of all unlawful and 2nd they could produce injury to one's body and to the mind that there are numerous people who are currently dwelling in mental organizations or else the cemetery because of it. The drug addict has this idea at the same time that putting a good cover up from their family is completed.

When the particular person is deep into addiction alternatively, the hiding step is through which currently proceeds to the pace where he do not care anymore in case his family members knows about this. They are merely lucky in case their family are there to experience everything since most often, they could attain this state until finally their wives or perhaps husbands depart from them. This only confirm that medicines are harmful of course not only for the physiologic existence but for practically every part that the individual exist in. Early recognition is usually an advantage for early treatment solution only when people surrounding the addict notice it. Here are the typically hidden signs and symptoms by the abuser.

Intense Alternation in Appetite

When the desire for food go from natural to extreme no food taken or maybe all food taken, this isn't hormones only because harmful medications can do this to those even during a short period they've been used. Find out if lame excuses of not wanting to eat or maybe overeating for consecutive meals are exhibited at regular recipes because these signs or symptoms usually are caused by medications that can be purchased anywhere on the streets.

Sleep pattern alteration

Sleeping for the abuser could possibly be extended or not present at all. This sleeping alter might be reasoned out for activities to be carried out in the office that even in the wee hours they'd take action even if they don't usually do it and for those who're sleepy, being ill is their justification for this. Their efficiency for their jobs are put to danger because people who are sleepless they're going to sleep all day and for the drowsy people they will get lazy the entire time.

Not talking

These persons would normally block conversation especially when they were inquired with regards to the change in their behavior. Their common inclination is to get away from the interrogation and go to their close friends who're abusers as well.

These are the leading symptoms concealed by the abuser. If you notice on your loved ones, keep in mind that working on the problem the earliest time possible would give him the chance to be healed totally.

Adios, Big Tex | Boomers and Books

?Howdy, folks!?

Every October since 1952, a 52-foot-tall cowboy drawled those words of welcome to visitors to the State Fair of Texas. Sixty years later, Big Tex was silenced.

Big Tex started life in 1949 as Santa Claus in the town of Kerens (about 70 miles southeast of Dallas). Created by local merchants to attract holiday business, Saint Nick?s lure didn?t last. When the State Fair of Texas offered to buy the statue for $750, a deal was made. With a new identity, career switch, and change of wardrobe, the barrel-chested man was reborn as the state fair?s icon, as much a part of the fair as the Statue of Liberty is to New York Harbor.

Over the years, Big Tex underwent a few changes. His jeans and western shirt have been provided by Levi Strauss, H. D. Lee Company, and the Williamson-Dickie Company. Plastic surgery on his face corrected an odd wink and straightened his nose. He was given the ability to talk through a movable jaw. In 1997 a new steel skeleton improved his posture, allowing one hand to wave to passersby. Big Tex celebrated his 50th birthday in 2002 with his own AARP card and a cake.

My first encounter with Big Tex occurred in elementary school. Each year I saved my babysitting money to spend during Fair Day?an official school holiday. Riding the bus across town with friends from the Dallas suburb of Oak Cliff, we entered the fairground gates and were greeted by Big Tex?s booming ?Howdy.? Once inside, we headed for the Hall of State or the Women?s Building (free food samples!) or perhaps to the Automobile Building or Natural History Museum. Our parting words to each other would invariably be, ?Meet me at Big Tex at noon.? That?s when we?d pause by the big guy?s size-70 boots for a Fletcher?s Corny Dog or a pink cloud of cotton candy before hitting the midway rides. The Wild Mouse, Tilt-A-Whirl, double Ferris wheel, Hammer, and Comet occupied the rest of our day. Big Tex oversaw it all.

So imagine my shock when I heard the sad news that Big Tex caught fire and burned, leaving only his steel skeletal remains. How could that have happened? Had someone carelessly thrown a lit cigarette at his blue jeans? Had a firework ignited his Western shirt? Or, as suggested by someone on Facebook, had terrorists attacked the symbol of the State Fair of Texas? Although autopsy results have not been released, the cause seems to have been much less dramatic. Fair officials believe an electrical problem sparked the fatal conflagration.

Fair officials vow to have an even bigger and better Big Tex in place for next year?s annual event. But to those of us who remember the original cowboy?s towering presence and booming welcome, a day at the fair won?t be quite the same without a ?Howdy? from our old friend, the original Big Tex.

NOTE: Just a few weeks ago a group of Oak Cliff Baby Boomers met at Big Tex during a day at the fair. Pictures were taken and memories shared. They didn?t know they were bidding him farewell. Somehow it seems appropriate that these Baby Boomers gathered at the feet of Big Tex ? a 60-year-old Baby Boomer himself.

UBS bosses influenced my trading, says accused trader

LONDON (Reuters) - Ex-trader Kweku Adoboli told a court on Monday his bosses at UBS , including senior executive Carsten Kengeter, had been pushing him to take more risks when he took positions that eventually cost the Swiss bank $2.3 billion.

Giving evidence at his criminal trial, Adoboli quoted another senior executive as telling him in April 2011 he should keep testing the boundaries until he received "a slap on the back of the wrist".

Adoboli, 32, was arrested on September 15, 2011 and his trial started a year later. He has pleaded not guilty to two counts of fraud and four of false accounting.

The prosecution have described him as a "rogue trader" who far exceeded his risk limits and concealed his unhedged positions by making fictitious bookings into the accounts.

The British-educated Ghanaian does not deny he made fictitious bookings, but he says everything he did was to generate profits for UBS, the Swiss bank he considered his "family".

"I don't believe I was a rogue trader," Adoboli told the jury on Monday, describing himself as a team player who was constantly sharing information and ideas with colleagues.

Adoboli cried in the witness box on Monday as two advertisements from UBS's "We will not rest" campaign were played in court. The campaign was part of the bank's efforts to improve its image after it came close to collapse during the financial crisis of 2008.

The ex-trader testified he had taken the campaign very seriously and that to him, it was an encouragement to "become more innovative", "take more risk" and "be bold".

Asked by his lawyer when he had abandoned his commitment to UBS, he said: "At 3 a.m. (on September 14, 2011), when they told me they had called the police".

"PUSH THE BOUNDARIES"

Adoboli said a "huge cultural change" affected his Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs) desk in April 2011, when as part of an internal re-organisation it was moved from the cash equities division to the Global Synthetic Equities (GSE) unit.

He said GSE was led by senior managers recently hired by UBS from rival Deutsche Bank, who had brought with them a more aggressive trading culture. One was Yassine Bouhara, who later resigned as co-head of global equities at UBS in the wake of Adoboli's arrest.

Adoboli recalled a conversation on April 11, 2011, in which Bouhara had pushed him to take greater risks in pursuit of greater profits.

"He said 'you do not know that you have pushed the boundaries far enough until you get a slap on the back of the wrist'," Adoboli said.

One of his lines of defence has been that the large trading positions he took in the summer of 2011 were in line with a new, more aggressive trading style being promoted by senior management.

His defence team has sought to portray UBS as a bank where supervision was lax and managers turned a blind eye to rule-bending as long as profits rolled in.

He recalled that in May and June 2011 he held a bearish view of the markets and colleagues had relentlessly pressured him into changing his stance.

This culminated in his close colleague John Hughes sending a caricature of Adoboli as a bear to a large group of people.

"At that stage I broke. I just broke," said Adoboli.

"I WISH I WAS A ROGUE TRADER"

These events led Adoboli to flip from a short to a long position on July 1 and to stick to that new stance through a sell-off in August, leading to huge losses.

"It (the market) sold off 30 percent from peak to trough and I held it all the way down because of the intervention of those around me," Adoboli said.

He argued that if he had stuck to his short position he would have made profits, not losses, and would never have got into trouble.

"I wish I was a rogue trader. I wish I hadn't listened. I wouldn't be here today," he said.

Among those who influenced his thinking during that period, he said, was Kengeter, then chief executive officer of UBS's investment banking arm. Since July this year, Kengeter has shared that position with Andrea Orcel.

Adoboli said Kengeter had visited the ETFs desk on July 12, 2011, recalling that they had talked about their views of the world and that Kengeter had told him: "I like your trade."

"He had acquired the view that the market was going to rally. It is churlish of a relatively junior trader to ignore the word of the global head of the whole investment bank," Adoboli told the court.

The trial continues on Tuesday, when Adoboli will continue giving evidence.

Novel genes that may drive rare, aggressive form of uterine cancer identified

ScienceDaily (Oct. 28, 2012) ? Researchers have identified several genes that are linked to one of the most lethal forms of uterine cancer, serous endometrial cancer. The researchers describe how three of the genes found in the study are frequently altered in the disease, suggesting that the genes drive the development of tumors. The findings appear in the Oct. 28, 2012, advance online issue of Nature Genetics. The team was led by researchers from the National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI), part of the National Institutes of Health.

Cancer of the uterine lining, or endometrium, is the most commonly diagnosed gynecological malignancy in the United States. Also called endometrial cancer, it is diagnosed in about 47,000 American women and leads to about 8,000 deaths each year.

Each of its three major subtypes -- endometrioid, serous and clear-cell -- is caused by a different constellation of genetic alterations and has a different prognosis. Endometrioid tumors make up about 80 percent of diagnosed tumors. Surgery often is a complete cure for women with the endometrioid subtype, since doctors usually diagnose these cases at an early stage.

Compared to other subtypes, the 2 to 10 percent of uterine cancers that comprise the serous subtype do not respond well to therapies. The five-year survival rate for serous endometrial cancer is 45 percent, compared to 65 percent for clear-cell and 91 percent for endometrioid subtypes. Serous and clear-cell endometrial tumor subtypes are clinically aggressive and quickly advance beyond the uterus.

"Serous endometrial tumors can account for as much as 39 percent of deaths from endometrial cancer," said Daphne W. Bell, Ph.D., an NHGRI investigator and the paper's senior author. Dr. Bell heads the Reproductive Cancer Genetics Section of NHGRI's Cancer Genetics Branch.

To determine which genes are altered in serous endometrial cancer, Dr. Bell and her team undertook a comprehensive genomic study of tumors by sequencing their exomes, the critical 1 to 2 percent of the genome that codes for proteins.

"Exome sequencing is a powerful tool for revealing important insights about this form of cancer that exacts such a high toll for thousands of women," said NHGRI Scientific Director Dan Kastner, M.D., Ph.D. "This study pinpoints genetic alterations that may be essential for onset and progression of uterine cancers and may eventually lead to new therapeutic targets."

Dr. Bell's team focused on the rarer, more aggressive forms of endometrial cancer. They began their study by examining serous tumor tissue and matched normal tissue from 13 patients. National Cancer Institute and Massachusetts General Hospital pathologists processed the 26 tissue samples, which subsequently underwent whole-exome sequencing at the NIH Intramural Sequencing Center.

With the exome data in hand, the researchers filtered through millions of data points to locate alterations, or mutations. They disqualified from the analysis any mutation found in a tumor and its matched healthy tissue, looking expressly for mutations that occurred exclusively in the tumor cells. They also eliminated one of the 13 tumors from analysis because its exome had hundreds more unique mutations than any other tumor.

The researchers detected more than 500 somatic mutations within the remaining 12 tumors. They next looked for genes that were mutated in more than one of the tumors. An alteration that occurs in more than one tumor is more likely to be relevant to the development of the cancer than a unique alteration.

"When you identify a set of mutations, they could either be drivers that have caused the cancer or incidental passengers that are of no consequence; our goal is to identify the drivers," Dr. Bell explained. "One way to do this is to home in on genes that are mutated in more than one tumor, because we know from experience that frequently mutated genes are often driver genes."

The team felt confident that alterations in nine genes could be driver genes in serous endometrial cancer. Three of the nine genes had previously been recognized by researchers in the cancer genetics field as a cause of serous endometrial cancer. To get a clearer picture of driver gene status among the other six genes, the researchers sequenced each gene in 40 additional serous endometrial tumors. They discovered that three of the six genes -- CHD4, FBXW7 and SPOP -- are altered at a statistically high frequency in serous endometrial cancer.

The team also found that this set of three genes is mutated in 40 percent of the serous endometrial cancer tumors and in 15 to 26 percent of the other endometrial cancer subtypes.

Probing still further, the researchers looked for the same genes highlighted by their exome sequencing study within databases that organize genes according to their biological function. They found an enrichment of genes involved in chromatin remodeling, the dynamic process by which the contents of the cell nucleus, including DNA, are packaged and modified. Chromatin remodeling enables tightly packaged DNA to be accessed for the expression of genes. Intriguingly, CHD4 was one of the genes that formed the chromatin-remodeling cluster.

"We sequenced the other genes that make up this cluster and, as a set, these genes are frequently mutated in both serous and clear-cell endometrial tumors," said Dr. Bell.

They also noted frequent mutations in genes that regulate a process known as ubiquitin-mediated protein degradation. The process targets unneeded proteins for destruction, and thus prevents them from accumulating within the cell. Left to accumulate, some of the target proteins are known to drive cancer formation. FBXW7 and SPOP are both known to play a role in binding to the unneeded proteins and targeting them for destruction.

Many of the FBXW7 gene mutations that Dr. Bell's team identified are known in other cancers to be driver mutations that prevent the FBXW7 protein from binding to its target protein. Dr. Bell believes that altered SPOP may behave the same way. "All the mutations we found in SPOP are in the region that binds the target proteins" she said. "We suspect the mutations in SPOP might lead to the accumulation of the unneeded proteins within the cell. But that has to be tested."

The current findings build on the team's 2011 study that showed for the first time that alterations in the PIK3R1 gene occur in all subtypes of endometrial cancer and are most frequent in the more common endometrioid subtype.

"This discovery really changes our understanding of some of the genetic alterations that may contribute to this disease," Dr. Bell said, acknowledging that the findings are limited by the small number of tumors subjected to exome sequencing.

She noted that it is too early to make a direct connection between their findings and prospects for treatments for this aggressive form of uterine cancer.
