HAVANA (AP) ? A group of 13 Cuban dissidents who have occupied a Havana church for two days are no longer demanding an audience with Pope Benedict XVI when he visits this month, but vowed Thursday to continue their protest.
The dissidents say they are now asking the pontiff to mediate a list of their grievances with the Cuban government, said Fred Calderon, a spokesman for the group, in a phone interview from a closed-off room in the Central Havana Church of Charity where he and 12 others have holed up since Tuesday.
Calderon complained that Catholic officials had refused to bring them food, even though the dissidents have offered to pay for it. He said the group had not eaten anything since the protest began, though they are drinking water. A companion said later that one of their children had managed to sneak them some bread and milk.
Numerous phone calls to the church's spokesman in Havana went unanswered, and he did not respond to an email seeking comment.
But the occupation has clearly angered Catholic officials, who have been friendly to and mediated for other dissidents in the past.
The church remained partially shuttered Thursday, with no sign of police outside. Traffic was normal and adjacent stands selling flowers and handicrafts were operating as usual.
Calderon said his group wants Benedict to speak with authorities about freeing people imprisoned for political crimes, ending intimidation of dissidents, increasing access to information, expanding private property rights, doing away with travel restrictions and establishing a transitional government to end a half-century of Communist rule under Fidel and Raul Castro.
"We want him to intercede on our behalf ... and be a mediator for our demands," Calderon told The Associated Press.
Such a result seems unlikely given the church's forceful rejection of the protest so far, which spokesman Orlando Marquez termed "illegitimate" and "disrespectful." Even prominent Cuban dissidents have questioned whether disrupting a house of worship was an appropriate tactic.
Cuba's government has had little to say, but generally considers dissidents to be mercenaries trying to undermine its authority. State media, which rarely mentions the opposition, published the Catholic Church's condemnation of the occupation in Thursday's papers.
"Nobody has the right to turn temples into political trenches," read the communique from Marquez, which was issued the previous evening.
Calderon said he was aware of the negative response, but vowed not to blink.
"We will not leave," he said. "We do not see the church as a trench but as a refuge."
A high-ranking priest from the Havana archdiocese has visited the dissidents several times and offered to bring a government official to talk to them, Calderon said.
None of the eight men and five women inside the church has a noted history of activism, and they apparently are not members of a single group, though Calderon said he belonged to an organization called the Republican Party, one of the many small, often-ephemeral outfits that make up the fractured opposition.
Another dissident in the church said the protesters average about 40 years old and none are currently employed. They include homemakers, restaurant workers, university graduates and retirees, said Vladimir Calderon, who is not related to Fred Calderon.
More prominent dissenters such as the Ladies in White and blogger Yoani Sanchez generally sought to distance themselves, while expressing sympathy for the group's demands.
"These are new people," said Elizardo Sanchez, head of the Havana-based Cuban Commission on Human Rights and National Reconciliation and a de-facto spokesman for dissidents. "We are being cautious."
Sanchez predicted that dissidents' ties to the Catholic Church will suffer since the established opposition has not backed the occupation.
However Yoani Sanchez, no relation, said she thought the Church overreacted.
"Although I have many criticisms of the act of occupying a church, I have a worse opinion of the archdiocese's statement published in (Communist Party newspaper) Granma," Sanchez tweeted.
Many of the more-established dissidents have significant ties to the Catholic Church, which in 2010 helped broker the release of the last of 75 opposition activists and social commentators imprisoned in a 2003 crackdown. The last was freed in spring 2011.
Cuban authorities dispute dissident claims the government holds political prisoners.
Most of the inmates still behind bars for political crimes were convicted of violent offenses such as hijacking and armed assault, which keeps them from being recognized as prisoners of conscience by Amnesty International.
Benedict's Cuba trip is scheduled for March 26-28.

They are too busy?working to learn all they can about technology, science, math and entrepreneurship while pursuing their individual goals. And they are thriving.

In 2011-2012, ChiTech?s third school year of operation, 49 percent of the student body is female. Chosen by lottery, ChiTech students? love and aptitude for technology, science and math vary widely, as do their academic and social economic backgrounds. Yet the young women of ChiTech are leveraging the entrepreneurship-oriented program to their advantage.
Ninth graders Taquisha Ellis and Chanell Jackson came to ChiTech from Dvorak Technology Academy, a K-8 school with a technology-driven curriculum, believing that the school could give them tools for their future. This year, Jackson and Ellis have learned now to build their own websites and work with stock business programs such as Microsoft Excel and Powerpoint?in addition to math, English, and science.
?I want to become a pediatrician,? says Jackson. ?I felt the more technology I knew about, the easier it would be to become a pediatrician.?
Keautishay Young and Savannah Young (no relation to each other) both loved technology even before landing at ChiTech. Keautishay remembers being frustrated at her old school when her technology class started on robotics just as the term was ending. Savannah has always been good with computers, and in middle school took a class to learn how to build one from scratch.
Now juniors at ChiTech, the two are building websites and mobile applications. Savannah says her tech class can be very challenging at times, ?but after you get to know the curriculum and material, it becomes easy after a while.?
In addition to coursework, Savannah, Keautishay and their peers are meeting high-level executives through school tours to local corporations and programming in the school?s Young Women?s Leadership Society. ?Last year, Savannah and a handful of other students were selected to make a presentation to Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer. ?I like the fact that this school is helping young women in technology, and they?re always helping us with our leadership skills,? says Keautishay, who wants to run her own company and become a business leader in technology.
Not every student enters ChiTech as a tech enthusiast, but many come to love tech and find they are really good at it. For example, 11th grader Javona Hamb came to ChiTech three years ago, simply attracted by the promise of a new, innovative school that would start small and add a grade each year. ?I wasn?t into technology,? Hamb says. ?I didn?t know anything. I thought it was going to be like The Matrix, all ones and zeros, but it wasn?t like that at all.?
As a junior, Hamb has learned to code in HTML, CSS, HTML5, Java Script, and C# programming languages. ?Now when my teacher asks ?How do you think they made Facebook or Google, I?m like ?That?s nothing,?? she laughs.
Hamb originally wanted to be a doctor, but now she?s also considering a technology career, maybe computer programming. ?I?m going to try to put the two together,? she says.
Then there are those students, like Martha Zuniga, who had no affinity for technology when they entered ChiTech, but through hard work, their skills and knowledge have grown.
A junior who applied to ChiTech to avoid a poor-performing local high school, Zuniga recalls entering her new high school not knowing what to expect. ?Before I knew it, I was writing code.?
Three years later, art and English remain Zuniga?s favorite and best subjects; math and technology remain ?super difficult,? she says.
But Zuniga, who is aiming for a good college and hopes to make a positive impact on the world, still values the tech classes that make her struggle.
?I don?t know what I?ll do with technology,? says Zuniga, ?But I think the whole process behind it?the way we solve problems, the way we have to think things through before we write code?molds us to become better people, teaches us how to see problems from different perspectives and puts our opinion on a broader spectrum. It also teaches us not to give up.?
The advice these young women of ChiTech give to any girl considering a science, technology or math-oriented high school program: ?Go for it!? says Jackson. Adds Ellis: ?It?s fun. It will be a good opportunity to know new things about technology.?

FAIRVIEW TOWNSHIP ? The family of a special education student will receive $15,000 from the West Shore School District to settle claims surrounding the child?s education.
The board Thursday night approve the settlement with the family, who wasn?t identified. The settlement was reached as an alternative to issues being litigated through a special education due process hearing, and releases the district from claims made in federal court, officials said.
Thomas Burnheimer, the district?s director of pupil services, said the settlement was warranted from an economic standpoint. The $15,000 payment will be made by the district?s insurance carriers.
The district has settled cases with the families of special education students before. In November 2009, the district paid a family $31,506 as part of an agreement district officials said at the time was not an admission of wrongdoing.
ScienceDaily (Mar. 14, 2012) ? Earlier evidence out of UCLA suggested that meditating for years thickens the brain (in a good way) and strengthens the connections between brain cells. Now a further report by UCLA researchers suggests yet another benefit.
Eileen Luders, an assistant professor at the UCLA Laboratory of Neuro Imaging, and colleagues, have found that long-term meditators have larger amounts of gyrification ("folding" of the cortex, which may allow the brain to process information faster) than people who do not meditate. Further, a direct correlation was found between the amount of gyrification and the number of meditation years, possibly providing further proof of the brain's neuroplasticity, or ability to adapt to environmental changes.
The article appears in the online edition of the journal Frontiers in Human Neuroscience.
The cerebral cortex is the outermost layer of neural tissue. Among other functions, it plays a key role in memory, attention, thought and consciousness. Gyrification or cortical folding is the process by which the surface of the brain undergoes changes to create narrow furrows and folds called sulci and gyri. Their formation may promote and enhance neural processing. Presumably then, the more folding that occurs, the better the brain is at processing information, making decisions, forming memories and so forth.
"Rather than just comparing meditators and non-meditators, we wanted to see if there is a link between the amount of meditation practice and the extent of brain alteration," said Luders. "That is, correlating the number of years of meditation with the degree of folding."
Of the 49 recruited subjects, the researchers took MRI scans of 23 meditators and compared them to 16 control subjects matched for age, handedness and sex. (Ten participants dropped out.) The scans for the controls were obtained from an existing MRI database, while the meditators were recruited from various meditation venues. The meditators had practiced their craft on average for 20 years using a variety of meditation types -- Samatha, Vipassana, Zen and more. The researchers applied a well-established and automated whole-brain approach to measure cortical gyrification at thousands of points across the surface of the brain.
They found pronounced group differences (heightened levels of gyrification in active meditation practitioners) across a wide swatch of the cortex, including the left precentral gyrus, the left and right anterior dorsal insula, the right fusiform gyrus and the right cuneus.
Perhaps most interesting, though, was the positive correlation between the number of meditation years and the amount of insular gyrification.
"The insula has been suggested to function as a hub for autonomic, affective and cognitive integration," said Luders. "Meditators are known to be masters in introspection and awareness as well as emotional control and self-regulation, so the findings make sense that the longer someone has meditated, the higher the degree of folding in the insula."
While Luders cautions that genetic and other environmental factors could have contributed to the effects the researchers observed, still, "The positive correlation between gyrification and the number of practice years supports the idea that meditation enhances regional gyrification."
Other authors of the study included Florian Kurth, Emeran A. Mayer, Arthur W.Toga, and Katherine L. Narr, all of UCLA, and Christian Gaser, University of Jena, Germany. Funding was provided by several organizations, including the National Institutes of Health. The authors report no conflict of interest.

Other Points To Watch For
Though the points mentioned above give you some important information about judging the quality of bedding jobs, three other items are worth looking for as well.
If a gun has a bedding block?a reinforced area around the recoil lug?that?s a good sign. Bedding blocks are a good practice, especially on heavy-recoiling rifles. Bedding blocks spread the recoil out and reduce the punishment that the recoil lug area is subjected to.
In plastic stocks, I like built-in metal bedding bases. In my opinion, some fiberglass, Kevlar, and other synthetic stocks do not have the necessary stiffness to ensure the elimination of stress problems. A metal bedding block removes that factor.
Also, I recommend the use of a torque wrench to standardize the force with which the action is pulled down into the stock. All guns shoot best when a certain amount of stress is applied on the action. To find the right amount of stress, the shooter has to adjust the torque on the action and shoot some rounds?a laborious process. Why would you want to risk altering the characteristics of a good-shooting gun by torqueing it differently if you must take it apart?
