Party in Five: Football Game-Day Party - Devour Recipe & Food ...

We here at Cooking Channel love a good party. But throwing a memorable event requires more than just gathering some food and drink. We show you how with just five main ?ingredients? (including recipes, big-impact decorating ideas and easy DIY elements) you can throw a party that feels like it has a cohesive theme ? minimal work required.

There?s nothing like getting a group together for a game-watching party ? the entertainment?s a no-brainer, the food is hassle-free and the guests arrive ready to have a good time. This year, I hosted a big-game party for a group of fellow fans, and after a bit of planning, the day came together in a way that was both stylish and sporty. The food centered around a build-your-own-chili bar with details in our home-team colors, and in addition to the game playing on a big screen, I set out some fun activities and more than enough beer.

To throw your own football game-day party, you?ll need five essential ingredients:
? printable bingo cards (download the template here)
? homemade chili and lots of toppings (get recipes below)
? paper flag banners in team colors
? roasted peanuts in newspaper cones
? AstroTurf coasters

Click here to see the party in action and get tips on hosting your own football game-day party.

Spotlight On: The Menu
Game day calls for some hearty grub ? and there?s no heartier dish than chili. I decided to create a build-your-own-chili bar and asked a few friends to bring their signature chili recipes for some friendly competition. We offered three options ? white bean and chicken chili, Texas chili and a classic game-day chili?? and an array of toppings like red onion, shredded cheese, sour cream, guacamole, chives and hot sauce. A chalkboard menu displays all the chili choices (in a sporty locker-room way), and I served cornbread straight from the oven in a cast-iron skillet. To set up your own buffet, serve chili in enamel or stoneware pots that can go straight from stovetop to table, and place toppings in small glass bowls. Hang paper flag garlands above the table for added festivity and a burst of team colors.

Since watching sports also requires snacks in front of the tube, set out tortilla chips and homemade guacamole on the coffee table, along with roasted peanuts (still in the shell) in newspaper cones. First top the coffee table with a large square of kraft paper for a casual, masculine look that also makes clean-up a snap. Since many fans wouldn?t dare cheer their team on without a beer in hand, fill glass beer growlers with your favorite ale and let guests fill and refill their mugs as needed. (Bonus: You?re free to??watch the game relatively uninterrupted!)

Find out how to set up your chili bar, print game-day bingo cards and get more decorating ideas here.

The LLVLC Show (Episode 651): Hollywood Personal Trainer ...

SIGN UP NOW FOR LOW-CARB CRUISE IN GALVESTON, TX

In Episode 651 of ?The Livin? La Vida Low-Carb Show with Jimmy Moore,? I?m so stoked to share with you my conversation with a Hollywood personal trainer and health podcaster named Vinnie Tortorich. It seems like there?s another new face popping up on the health scene every single week as more and more people are becoming enlightened to the message of healthy low-carb nutrition. The science supporting a ketogenic diet as a means for optimizing your weight, health and exercise performance is compelling and is capturing the attention of people from every angle of the overall wellness community. That?s what hooked a personal trainer named Vinnie Tortorich who has become so infuriated by the blatant lies we have been told about what a healthy diet and exercise routine looks like that he decided to start a podcast taking on the moniker of ?America?s Angriest Trainer.?

Vinnie, along with his lovely co-host Anna Vovich, pump out some fantastic information about nutrition, healthy living and some irreverent yet poignant commentary on the absolute craziness that is the world we live in these days. Listen in as Vinnie and I talk about his work with Hollywood star clients like Howie Mandel, his extensive background in fitness and exercise, why he turned to podcasting to start spreading the right messages about health, the battle he fought with leukemia and his exciting new book project with noted author and TV movie producer Dean Lorey that he expects to make a major impact. If you like ?The Livin? La Vida Low-Carb Show? and want just a little bit more (with some colorful language thrown in from time to time just for good measure), then check out Vinnie?s podcast and listen to him in today?s interview!

Listen to Vinnie Tortorich talk about what?s got him angry:

  • He considers me one of the biggest guests he?s ever had
  • He?s a big fan of my work and got ?giddy? on his show
  • He played middle linebacker, was lean and ?all muscle?
  • After he left school and sports, he was determined not to gain
  • Six months after playing college football, he packed on pounds
  • He didn?t realize it was happening to him as it was
  • How his girlfriend informed him that he?s ?getting fat?
  • He?s always been about keeping weight on, now wanted to lose it
  • She recommended he take Dexatrim and he took it for one day
  • He started parking his car and taking his bike everywhere
  • But it still wasn?t enough because he ate high-carb
  • He always heard that glycogen was his fuel source
  • When he started training 30 years ago, there were no trainers
  • He was telling clients to cut their carbs, but he didn?t
  • How he became a Hollywood trainer to the stars
  • When he moved to Southern California, he got into the scene
  • Started off with some Playboy playmates then real celebrities
  • Once his name got out there, he became in demand
  • When a celebrity gets into trouble, it?s usually the trainer
  • He used to brag about his clients, now he shuts his mouth
  • Howie Mandel and Genie Francis are ?dear friends? and clients
  • How he found out about low-carb and ketogenic diets
  • In his education at Tulane, he learned about ketones
  • But they said your body needs carbohydrates for fuel
  • He was skeptical about professors who claimed carbs were needed
  • When he became a trainer, he cut back on clients? carb intake
  • He always thought cycling took a very high-carb intake
  • The work he found on ketone-fueled cyclists that intrigued him
  • He started playing around with being in ketosis all the time
  • He found his cycle rides were much more efficient in ketosis
  • He?s always been a big fan of Dr. Steve Phinney/Dr. Jeff Volek
  • How he tries to keep the message simple on his podcast
  • His listeners are both overweight and athletes alike
  • Urine ketone sticks just aren?t a reliable ketone measure
  • Testing blood ketones is a great standard bearer for ketosis
  • If we?re going to break health system, we need to help people
  • Why he calls his podcast ?America?s Angriest Trainer?
  • He?s angry that your good intentions have been stolen
  • People are trying to do the right things with no results
  • We SHOULD be angry because people follow things faithfully
  • We?ve cut our fat, eat grains and exercise for hours
  • People are desperately looking for advice about what to do
  • If you run more, then you?ll just be more hungry
  • Remove the sugars and grains and that?s most of it
  • Most people don?t realize ketchup has sugar in it
  • He tries to teach people hidden sugars in foods
  • Why he doesn?t mention vegetable oils to keep it simple
  • He may go to promoting that message with his listeners soon
  • When he started his podcast, he avoided saying ?ketosis?
  • Listeners asked about ketosis after Andrea Anders interview
  • Ketogenic diet and ketosis are two big topics on his podcast
  • He always puts ?dietary? in front of ketosis to differentiate
  • Phinney/Volek describe it as ?nutritional ketosis?
  • There?s no sense in being worried about ketoacidosis
  • Your health and weight will be optimized in this state
  • It took him a year to get Howie Mandel off sugars/grains
  • His wife was worried about the butter and bacon he eats
  • Howie is ?very neurotic? and his heart doc praising him
  • He?s 57, leaner and more muscular than ever before
  • In the ?best shape of his life? wearing out treadmills
  • He actually looks younger now than he did at the age of 50
  • He put on ?the middle age spread? despite running everyday
  • Fitness magazines are wanting to have him on their cover
  • Yo Vinnie, where you from my brother?
  • Details about his upcoming new book with Dean Lorey
  • Dean insisted Vinnie do this book despite not wanting to
  • The 40,000 words in notes he wrote for the book
  • Top publishers wanted them to cut the book into two books
  • He will self-publish first book, major release for second
  • Jillian Michaels people warned him not to publish the book
  • TV trainers are trainers who can?t get their business going
  • The disturbing way he found out he had leukemia
  • His oncologist suggested he cut sugar out of his life
  • Sugar actually helps cancer to grow
  • He shares his cancer experience in his new book
  • The role ketogenic diets play in treating/preventing cancer
  • This diet is the way they used to treat epilepsy
  • It seems to work better than all those drugs out there

10 Sustainable Business Trends Underway in Detroit (Photo Tour)

Wayne State urban farming the Detroit Bus Company Tech Town sustainable business Sustainability Renewable Energy public transportation Michigan Central Station Leon Kaye green jobs food deserts Eastern Market downtown Detroit Detroit clean energy bicycling automakers

There may be hope for Detroit?s iconic Michigan Central Station

Since TriplePundit spent a few days in Detroit for the Auto Show earlier this month, I thought I would share some of the positive trends that are underway in the Motor City. It is easy to focus on Detroit?s negatives: the derelict buildings; the crime and grit; and a dysfunctional city government that maintains an infrastructure supporting two million people when its population is now just over 700,000. But, out of crisis comes opportunity for those who want to retrofit an incredible home, enjoy Michigan?s natural beauty and Midwestern grace and hospitality.

To that end, let me share some developments pointing to why I believe Detroit?s transformation is turning the city into an exciting sustainability laboratory:

Urban Farming: We have covered urban farming in Detroit in the past, and the movement is still growing. The local planning commission also approved a new urban farming ordinance last month, which will recognize the scores of farms and orchards that have sprouted across the city. Meanwhile a local entrepreneur who has been deeply involved in the movement, John Hantz, has pledged to purchase over 140 acres, clear out the debris and plant 15,000 trees.

Food Deserts are Blooming: One of Detroit?s must-sees is Eastern Market, a public market that boasts Michigan?s bounty throughout the year. This market has been around for decades, but business has boomed since Dan Carmody took the helm a few years ago. Eastern Market?s growth is important because finding fresh food can be difficult?for Detroit?s citizens; and even though some drugstores try to fill the gap with milk and fresh fruit, the pickings are slim and most of the produce is packaged and imported from afar. Carmody is working on developing a network of food hubs throughout the city as well as a community supported agriculture (CSA) program to bring food to residents instead of them having to take a long bus ride or taxi to suburban supermarkets.

Public schools going green. As 3p editor Andrea Newell points out, Detroit?s public school system is attempting to ?go green.? So far the results are mixed, but the beleaguered school system is making gains in six areas of impact: energy and water; waste and recycling; transportation; the outdoor environment; the indoor settings; and nutrition.

Automakers getting a clue.?Hopefully, some of those Detroit public school students will end up having meaningful careers at one of the Big Three automakers. Ford is making strides from having a climate scientist and futurist on the payroll to ramping up its electric vehicle offerings such as the Ford C-MAX Energy plug-in hybrid. Meanwhile, GM has made progress on meeting solar energy targets, has a booming recycling business and even goes so far as to compost . . . coffee grounds. Now even trucks are going plug-in! At last week?s North American International Auto Show, some of Ford?s speakers talked about how the Detroit infrastructure could become the Silicon Valley of transportation. Let?s hold them to their word.

Green building: With all the brownfields in Detroit, the jump on LEED points is an easy one to make. The local U.S. Green Building Council (USGSB) chapter in Detroit is an active one?buildings from those on Wayne State?s campus to the first LEED certified project, Lithuanian Hall, are emerging as some of the Motor City?s staunchest advocates are determined to groom Detroit as a 21st century sustainability laboratory.

Renewable energy: Did you know over 140 buildings in downtown Detroit are heated by district energy? Detroit?s huge cogeneration system, fueled by 3300 tons of municipal solid waste, is now expanding midtown to the Wayne State University campus. Detroit Thermal?s system is more efficient than each individual building having its own boilers and furnaces.

Bicycling: It may seem odd to talk about bicycling in a city that is the birthplace of the automobile, but Detroit is a great place to explore on two wheels. The symptoms of the city?s economic decline: empty roads and reemerging woodlands add to the city?s bike paths. Earlier this month, a local advocacy group organized a bike-a-thon to raise money for a local nonprofit bike shop. The Hub of Detroit and Back Alley Bikes are among the businesses working to turn Detroit?s residents and visitors onto bicycling.

Green jobs: Just a few miles from downtown Detroit near the city?s museum district is Tech Town, one key towards transforming southeastern Michigan into a 21st century greener economy. Housed partly within a 1920s Chevrolet factory, dozens of startups, including those in the clean energy sector, is a buzzing hub of entrepreneurship.

Bio-fueled public transport? Detroit?s public works, including its bus system, is a basket case, but some are attempting to fill the void. The Detroit Bus Company is attempting a privately-run approach and is currently seeking residents to fill out surveys on potential routes. A bus loop connecting Hamtramck, a thriving town surrounded entirely by the Motor City, and downtown Detroit is set to launch soon.

Hope for Michigan Central Station: Once a glorious transit center, this Beaux-Arts beauty has been derelict since the last trains rolled out in the 1980s. Matty Maroun, the building?s current owner, as well as the trans-border bridge that links Detroit to neighboring Windsor, Ontario, has caught plenty of heat over the years for leaving it empty?though in fairness there is huge risk in retrofitting the building into a facility no one will visit. Anyone can send a suggestion, however, to talktothestation.com. We applaud one tiny step, however: the Maroun family spent some coin illuminating the station over the holiday season.

Take our photo tour to see what Detroit offers and its future potential.

NEW ORLEANS (AP) ? Scenes and observations from the NFL's annual Super Bowl media day ? interviews with players and team personnel from the Baltimore Ravens and the San Francisco 49ers on the field at the Superdome:

    ___

Terrell Suggs stood up, threw down his microphone, kicked over his chair with a back heel as he stepped down from his podium, and then kicked over a cooler.

Onlookers laughed, satisfied that the Baltimore Ravens' mischievous linebacker had properly punctuated the frenetic, free-for-all known as Super Bowl media day.

Suggs plays a central role in one of the more intimidating defenses in the NFL, and at least some of the conversation involved football, and what it would take to slow down San Francisco quarterback Colin Kaepernick in Sunday's NFL championship game.

But media day is never just about football, not even when the players are interviewing each other.

Posing as a reporter, defensive end Arthur Jones asked Suggs which staple of Louisiana cuisine he preferred, gumbo or jambalaya.

"That's a good question, and I'm glad you asked that, Arthur," Suggs said. "Definitely gumbo."

Suggs also was asked if he is the best dancer in the locker room: "No way. 'Be Nasty,' (safety) Bernard Pollard ? he's definitely the best dancer. And I think if we get this done come Sunday, you all will get to see a good dose of it."

And maybe even get a song from Suggs. He wasn't shy about serenading everyone with a rendition of Meatloaf's "I Would Do Anything For Love," moments after he took his seat behind the microphone.

    ___

Katherine Webb credits a couple of camera shots of her watching the BCS national title game in Miami with landing her at the Super Bowl in New Orleans.

Otherwise known as Miss Alabama USA and the girlfriend of Crimson Tide quarterback A.J. McCarron, Webb has been hired by TV's "Inside Edition" to be its game correspondent.

"It's so exciting and absolutely crazy at the same time. It's happened so fast. I feel like I'm living on a plane but it's a great journey," said Webb, who was making her first trip to New Orleans for her first Super Bowl.

The 23-year-old Webb has been working on a fledgling modeling and acting career in Los Angeles.

"It's kind of funny how everything kind of lines up to me being at this point," said Webb, explaining that it all started with meeting McCarron while at home in Alabama late last year.

She was hired to interview players and coaches during media day, but wound up being interviewed herself. A colleague had to cut it short a few times, apologetically explaining that Webb had a job to do.

She said she prepped for the job.

"A.J. is interviewed all the time, so it's kind of cool to ask him, 'What do I need to ask and what do I need to stay away from? What annoys players the most to be asked?'" she said.

Webb created a buzz at the BCS game when she was caught on camera and play-by-play announcer Brent Musburger enthusiastically remarked that quarterbacks "get all the good-looking women." ESPN later apologized for the comments.

Webb, however, never thought an apology was necessary.

"Everybody seems to think that I'm offended and I'm not at all," she said. "I appreciate it. I appreciate the fact that he notices a beautiful woman. Women need to be told their beautiful more often. I took no offense to it."

    ___

For the second year in a row, Super Bowl media day was open to fans for the price of a $25 ticket. They were allowed to sit in sections of seats along the sideline with good views of players on the field, and paid attendance was 5,479, according to NFL spokesman Michael Signora.

When fans walked in, they were given gift bags that included small radios so they could listen to interviews. Other items were mostly product samples from sponsors, including chips and laundry detergent.

Among the fans were John Grimsley and Lisa Wyatt of Baltimore, sitting together a few rows from the field wearing purple jerseys with the No. 52 of star Ravens linebacker Ray Lewis. They said the ticket price was worth it.

"This is a very rare experience," said Grimsley, who has Ravens season tickets and tickets to Sunday's big game. "I've never been to anything like this. To be able to see all the Ravens being interviewed, to see some of these guys up close, you don't really get to see that when you go to the games. They're there and then they're gone."

    ___

The NFL says 5,205 reporters from 24 countries have credentials for the game, and some chose to work in costume at media day.

There was a correspondent from the Nickelodeon television network dressed as a super hero called Pick Boy, wearing black tights with a cape and trim of fluorescent orange and green.

Pick Boy approached 49ers practice squad linebacker Nate Stupar, asking him if he wanted to race. Stupar declined, saying he wasn't about to risk pulling any muscles for something like that.

"I would say that's the first time I got interviewed by a guy with a cape on," Stupar said. "It's entertainment and it's going to be fun to be around the entire week."

Univision radio play-by-play announcer Rafael Hernandez Brito wore a Spanish-style wrestling mask for part of the session.

TV Azteca reporter Jose Marquez Zamora looked like a rodeo clown, with his painted face, round rubber nose and long, pointy shoes covered with light blue sequins. He said he was, in fact, dressed as a typical clown in Monterrey, Mexico, and wasn't concerned about whether his interview subjects took him seriously.

"I don't make interviews about serious stuff," he said. "I only have fun with the players, so our viewers in Mexico get interesting stuff and also get entertained."

Niners offensive lineman Alex Boone was asked about his hair style, which looks similar to a mohawk ? Boone calls it a rhino hawk ? and whether he had the best hair on the team.

"Absolutely. I think I get it from my mom's side," Boone said. "My mom's got great hair."

He added that he never in his career had been asked about his hair in a football interview, and then reflected on how the range of questions on media day truly sets it apart from a typical NFL interview session.

"Weird. Very weird. A lot of questions coming this way and some of them aren't football-related, which creeps me out a little bit," Boone said. "But it's a trip, and I'm excited to be here."

When players and coaches were asked to play along with a joke about the growing influence of social media in everyday communication, results were mixed and appeared to expose the generation gap between some players and coaches.

49ers coach Jim Harbaugh and others were asked to answer some questions in hash tags only. The tags, which might look like (hash)SuperBowl on the website Twitter, are used to help social media users identify trendy topics.

"That would be very challenging to me," Harbaugh said. "I don't know the hash tag world that well. I don't have one. I don't have a Tweeter (sic). I'm not real good at that."

Ravens kicker Justin Tucker was more cooperative, answering several questions in a row about his Super Bowl experience as a rookie with, "Hash tag, awesome."

Charlize Theron's 'Hatfields & McCoys' Update Gets NBC Pickup

NEW YORK (TheWrap.com) - NBC has ordered the drama pilot "Hatfields & McCoys," a modern-day tale of the famously warring families from a team that includes executive producer Charlize Theron.

The series bears no relation to History's hit miniseries of the same name, which aired last year. But it does trade on the same legend of feuding West Virginia families.

In the new version, the families have moved to nearby Pittsburgh, where a startling death rekindles the feud. The blue-collar McCoys battle the wealthy Hatfields for control of the city.

And no, they aren't fighting over which family gets to not be in charge of Pittsburgh, which is a lovely place, if you've ever been.

The series is written and executive produced by John Glenn, with Theron, A.J. Dix, Dawn Olmstead, and Beau Flynn also executive producing. It comes from ABCS, Denver & Delilah,Tower Hill, Beau Flynn Productions and Grady Girl.

StatCounter?s iOS Web Traffic Measurement Shows Apple?s Asia Appeal May Be Waning

apple-hongkong1Apple's iPhone could be facing a downturn in overall consumer interest in key markets including Singapore and Hong Kong, according to a report from Reuters based on StatCounter traffic figures from this past weekend. StatCounter found that across 3 million websites for which it monitors traffic, Apple's share of mobile devices represented in the overall mix in Singapore dropped from 72 percent in January last year to 50 percent this month, with Android climbing from 20 percent to 43 percent in the same time frame.

App-driven life: When in Rome, you can turn lights on back home

Want to know how to change your smart phone into a light switch? Philips Hue bulbs are controlled by your Android or iPhone, letting you turn them on and off from another room or another country.?

    By Chris Gaylord / January 27, 2013

Your phone -- you want it to be a light switch? There's an app for that. The search for new apps spurs demand for creative app designers like Ben Johnson and Michelle Chen, pictured, at Raizlabs in Boston.

Now that most phones connect to the Internet, how about your light bulbs? Dutch electronics giant Philips trotted out a new kind of bulb last year ? one of the first to come with its own Internet router.

    ' + google_ads[0].line2 + '
    ' + google_ads[0].line3 + '

    '; } else if (google_ads.length > 1) { ad_unit += ''; } } document.getElementById("ad_unit").innerHTML += ad_unit; google_adnum += google_ads.length; return; } var google_adnum = 0; google_ad_client = "pub-6743622525202572"; google_ad_output = 'js'; google_max_num_ads = '1'; google_feedback = "on"; google_ad_type = "text"; google_adtest = "on"; google_image_size = '230x105'; google_skip = '0'; // -->

These Philips Hue bulbs can be controlled by your Android or iPhone, allowing you to turn them on and off from the couch or ... from another country. The Hue application lets you adjust the brightness and color of each bulb individually and then program different settings for certain situations.

Dinner time? Maybe dim the lights to 70 percent brightness and give them a slightly reddish tint. New painting that you want to show off? Take a photo of the artwork with your phone and then tell the lights to match certain colors from the image.

In tests done by the Monitor, the Hue bulbs seem well designed, even though the app is not that intuitive. Perhaps foreseeing this problem, Philips opened up the software that runs these lights, allowing programmers to craft their own Hue apps. Already, Apple's online store has a 99-cent homemade disco app called Magic Hue that can take control of the Philips bulbs and tell them to pulsate in tempo with music.

Each of the LED bulbs shines with the strength of a 50-watt incandescent, but sips just 8.5 watts of power ? an energy efficiency similar to that of curlicue compact fluorescents.

However, Wi-Fi lights aren't cheap. A starter kit of three bulbs and a router costs $200. Each additional light is $60. Competitor GreenWave Reality offers a four-pack of colorless, app-powered lights and a router for $200, with extra bulbs costing $20 apiece.

Holocaust victims mourned at Auschwitz and beyond

WARSAW, Poland (AP) ? Holocaust survivors, politicians, religious leaders and others marked International Holocaust Remembrance Day on Sunday with solemn prayers and the now oft-repeated warnings to never let such horrors happen again.

Events took place at sites including Auschwitz-Birkenau, the former death camp where Hitler's Germany killed at least 1.1 million people, mostly Jews, in southern Poland. In Warsaw, prayers were also held at a monument to the fighters of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising of 1943.

Pope Benedict XVI, speaking from his window at St. Peter's Square at the Vatican, warned that humanity must always be on guard against a repeat of murderous racism.

"The memory of this immense tragedy, which above all struck so harshly the Jewish people, must represent for everyone a constant warning so that the horrors of the past are not repeated, so that every form of hatred and racism is overcome, and that respect for, and dignity of, every human person is encouraged," the German-born pontiff said.

Not all words spoken by dignitaries struck the right tone, however.

On the sidelines of a ceremony in Milan, former Italian Premier Silvio Berlusconi sparked outrage when he praised Benito Mussolini for "having done good" despite the Fascist dictator's anti-Jewish laws. Berlusconi also defended Mussolini for allying himself with Hitler, saying he likely reasoned that it would be better to be on the winning side.

The United Nations in 2005 designated Jan. 27 as a yearly memorial day for the victims of the Holocaust ? 6 million Jews and millions of other victims of Nazi Germany during World War II. The day was chosen because it falls on the anniversary of the liberation in 1945 of Auschwitz, the Nazis' most notorious death camp and a symbol of the evil inflicted across the continent.

"Those who experienced the horrors of the cattle cars, ghettos, and concentration camps have witnessed humanity at its very worst and know too well the pain of losing loved ones to senseless violence," U.S. President Barack Obama said in a statement.

Obama went on to say that like those who resisted the Nazis, "we must commit ourselves to resisting hate and persecution in all its forms. The United States, along with the international community, resolves to stand in the way of any tyrant or dictator who commits crimes against humanity, and stay true to the principle of 'Never Again.'"

As every year, Holocaust survivors gathered in the cold Polish winter at Auschwitz ? but they shrink in number each year.

This year the key event in the ceremonies was the opening of an exhibition prepared by Russian experts that depicts Soviet suffering at the camp and the Soviet role in liberating it. The opening was presided over by Sergey Naryshkin, chairman of the Russian State Duma.

Several years ago, Polish officials stopped the opening of a previous exhibition. It was deemed offensive because the Russians depicted Poles, Lithuanians and others in Soviet-controlled territory as Soviet citizens. Poles and others protested this label since they were occupied against their will by the Soviets at the start of World War II.

The new exhibition ? titled "Tragedy. Courage. Liberation" and prepared by the Museum of the Great Patriotic War in Moscow ? removes the controversial terminology. It took years of discussions between Polish and Russian experts to finally complete it.

The exhibition narrates the Nazi crimes committed against Soviet POWS at Auschwitz, where they were the fourth largest group of prisoners, and at other sites. And it shows how the Red Army liberated the camp on Jan. 27, 1945, and helped the inmates afterward.

Also Sunday, a ceremony was held in Moscow at the Jewish Museum and Tolerance Center, which opened in November and is Russia's first major attempt to tell the story of its Jewish community. The museum portrays Russia as a safe and welcoming place for Jews today despite its history of pogroms and discrimination.

In Serbia, survivors and officials gathered at the site of a former concentration camp in the capital, Belgrade, to remember the Jewish, Serb and Roma victims of the Nazi occupation of the country.

Parliament speaker Nebojsa Stefanovic said it is the task of the new generations never to forget the Holocaust crimes, including those against Serbs.

"Many brutal crimes have been left without punishment, redemption and commemoration," he said. "I want to believe that by remembering the death and suffering of the victims the new generations will be obliged to fight any form of prejudice, racism and chauvinism, anti-Semitism and hatred."

Australia Day message from the Samuel Griffith Society - Michael ...

"Every Australian with an ideal for democracy - and I hope that means most?Australians - should do everything they lawfully can to oppose the introduction of this outrageous law," said Mr Callinan, who retired from the nation's highest court in 2007.

"It seems as if each year the Constitution and the cohesion of the Australian community are put at some new and entirely unnecessary risk.

"The dangers of the current one, of the introduction of a new law to criminalise speech which might cause offence to anyone, should not be underestimated."

His intervention in the debate over the government's plan to consolidate five federal anti-discrimination statutes coincides with a warning from Victorian Attorney-General Robert Clark that the scheme could expose state police and prison officers to litigation from suspects, offenders and prisoners.

In an article in?The Australian?today, Mr Clark writes that the government's proposal appears to apply to police pursuits, the arrest of suspects, the allocation of prison accommodation and facilities and to prosecutors' decisions about which charges to lay.

While the government proposed to exempt its own authorised activities from the proposed scheme, "it proposes no such general exemption for activities authorised under state law".

Their concerns have been triggered by an exposure draft of the government plan that has been widely criticised. ABC chairman Jim Spigelman, a former chief justice of NSW, warned that it would impose unprecedented restrictions on free speech.

If enacted, the scheme would extend the reach of provisions in the Racial Discrimination Act that already impose liability for actions that offend or insult.

Those provisions, used in 2011 against columnist Andrew Bolt, would be extended into all areas of discrimination law so legal action could be launched by anyone who claims to have an attribute protected by the scheme.

Those attributes include sexual orientation, gender identity, social origin, political opinion, disability, sex, age, race, industrial history, medical history, nationality, potential pregnancy and religion.

The onus of proof would be reversed so those accused of offending would be presumed guilty unless they proved their innocence.

Mr Callinan, who is president of the federalist Samuel Griffith Society, used his Australia Day message to members to denounce the scheme.

"Even the imaginative powers of George Orwell would not have conceived of an administration that would dare to try to forbid every member of society from passing adverse comment upon any other member of it," he said.

If "political good sense" did not prevail and the draft scheme were enacted, Mr Callinan said he was optimistic that "it will not survive the scrutiny of the courts".

Obama picks foreign policy aide as chief of staff

WASHINGTON (AP) ? President Barack Obama has chosen trusted adviser and national security expert Denis McDonough as his fifth chief of staff.

A White House official said in a statement that Obama will announce McDonough's appointment Friday in the East Room. McDonough, 43, will take over the key West Wing role from Jack Lew, Obama's nominee for Treasury secretary.

McDonough has advised Obama on foreign policy for nearly a decade and most recently served as the president's deputy national security adviser. He is highly regarded by White House staffers.

McDonough's place in Obama's inner circle was illustrated during the Navy SEAL raid that killed Osama bin Laden in May 2011. He is among those captured in a White House photograph seated in the situation room with Obama and other senior officials watching the raid unfold.

The White House official, speaking on condition of anonymity in order to speak before the president's announcement, said McDonough has played a key role in all of Obama's major national security decisions in recent years, including the end of the war in Iraq, winding down the war in Afghanistan, responses to natural disasters in Haiti and Japan and repeal of the military's ban on openly gay service members.

Earlier, McDonough worked as a foreign policy specialist in Congress, including as a senior foreign policy adviser to former Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle, D-S.D., before moving to Obama's Senate office.

McDonough's new role was previously filled by Rahm Emanuel, William Daly and Pete Rouse, as interim chief of staff, before Lew.

McDonough grew up in Minnesota as one of 11 children. Two of his brothers are priests. He is a graduate of St. John's University in Minnesota, where he played football, and he received a master's degree from Georgetown University.

(AP) ? Brandt Snedeker says the records set by Tiger Woods should have an asterisk because they're not easily matched by normal players.

That presumably would include his record at Torrey Pines.

"I think he's won here more times than I've won on tour," Snedeker said.

Nearly twice as much, to be exact.

Snedeker has four wins on the PGA Tour, including the Farmers Insurance Open last year. Woods has seven wins at Torrey Pines, five of those in a four-year stretch that included the U.S. Open.

But the fast talker from Tennessee is slowly making inroads. Snedeker still owns a share of the North Course record with a 61 his rookie season. He won the tournament last year by coming from seven shots behind on the final day and beating Kyle Stanley in a playoff. And he resumed his love affair on Thursday with a flawless round of 7-under 65 on the North Course for a share of the first-round lead with K.J. Choi.

The early edge goes to Choi, who ran off five birdies in a six-hole stretch at the turn, and then finished with three birdies on the last four holes. That gave him a 65 on the South Course, which plays 614 yards longer, hosted the U.S. Open and was more than 1? shots more difficult than the North in the opening round.

Woods has played like he owns this public course. Snedeker is still paying rent.

"I never really panic around here," Snedeker said. "I always know I'm one round away from playing really well. So it kind of all blends into a being a great fit for me."

Woods, meanwhile, looked like he would join the leaders when he two-putted for birdie on the 13th hole on the South. That put him one shot out of the lead, and he had a good look for birdie on the 14th. He missed that, and then made two bogeys on the next three holes and had to scramble for par on the par-5 18th for his 68.

It could have been better. Then again, Woods probably would have taken it after a three-putt double bogey early in his round put him at 1 over. He answered by playing the next five holes in 5-under par, one of those for eagle when he holed out from a greenside bunker on the par-5 sixth.

The birdie after the double bogey was the biggest.

"It was more important to get that birdie right out of the way, and get back to even par with the par 5 to play," Woods said. "I knew I had two par 5s on the front side, so I could get it down to par, and then maybe get two or three on the back. I thought that would be a good score. And lo and behold, I get it rolling ? get to 6 (under) and a chance to go to 7, so it can change quickly. But we had the perfect conditions for it. We couldn't ask for better conditions to score than we had today."

That much was clear by the leaderboard.

More than one-third of the field ? 56 players ? shot in the 60s. The eight players at 66 included Charles Howell, who tied for third in the Sony Open and lost in a playoff last week in the Humana Challenge, and Mike Weir of Canada, who took a big step toward showing his form is returning. Weir has not made a cut since 2011.

Tag Ridings made a hole-in-one on the third hole on the South Course and was in the group at 67 that also included Bo Van Pelt.

The biggest mystery was Choi. He is not a regular at Torrey Pines, skipped last year and was planning to miss it again. That was until he heard from his host family in San Diego that the South Korean community wanted to see him play. Choi put on quite a show. He finally got some height and spin into shots while warming up on the range, and he converted that into the best round on the South.

He ran off five birdies in a six-hole stretch on the back nine ? he started on No. 10 ? and no shot was more pleasing than a wedge into a light crosswind on the 15th hole that settled inches from the cup.

"Best shot ever on the South Course ? ever," he said, grinning.

This tournament is murky in any weather until the weekend. Of those 56 players who broke 70, only 19 of them played the South Course. Of the PGA Tour events on multiple courses, few of them have a greater contrast, although the score differential has been much greater than 1? strokes in recent years.

"The real one is tomorrow," Howell said after his 66 on the North.

Howell lost in a playoff last week in the Humana Challenge, and he started his season with a tie for third at the Sony Open. Whatever disappointment he felt in the California desert, he was able to shake off quickly. And he wasn't alone.

Scott Stallings lost a five-shot lead in the Humana Challenge and bogeyed the par-5 closing hole to miss the playoff. He bounced back with a 66.

Phil Mickelson had quite the taxing day. His 72 felt even higher considering he was playing with Snedeker, who was firing at flags and holing his putts. A three-time winner at Torrey Pines, Mickelson's week began with comments about the amount of taxes he is paying in California, followed by two rounds of apologies for not keeping his opinions to himself.

That wasn't a problem for him Thursday.

"I've been playing better than this, and there's no excuses," Mickelson said. "I've got to get my head a little bit more focused on the shots, and I haven't been as focused starting out. Hopefully, I'll be able to turn that around tomorrow and start a little bit more effectively in the future."

Dressed to Kill...or to Be Really Organized | DIY and home ...

We have officially stepped up our organizational/storage game. Last weekend, we were traveling to Jersey City for a friend?s birthday and we couldn?t resist a ?quick? pit stop at good old IKEA in Elizabeth, NJ (the closest IKEA to us). As I mentioned in my last post, (which you can read here), we devised a plan for moving our dressers around + purchasing a new one to create more storage space. Here?s a quick re-cap:

We had 1 dresser in our office dedicated to a lot of Andrew?s clothes.
    Office IKEA Malm Dresser

We had another dresser in our bedroom, which was for my clothes:
    Bedroom IKEA Malm Dresser

The idea was to move the dresser in the bedroom, into the office, and place the 2 IKEA Malm dressers on one of the larger walls in our office, pictured here with the keyboard, pre-move:
    Office wall

We purchased 1 new, 4-drawer IKEA Malm dresser for the bedroom. So I have gained 1 drawer and Andrew has technically gained 3! Wall space in our bedroom is limited, so we figured if we can?t go out, go up! The 4-drawer IKEA Malm dresser was just the right height to fit right under our wall-mounted TV, so we didn?t have to move that at all (whew)! Here?s what the bedroom dresser setup looks like now:

    IKEA Malm 4-Drawer Dresser

Is it me, or does the room somehow look bigger?? You probably can?t really tell from this picture, but for some reason, this dresser makes things feel a bit roomier. Maybe because it?s taller than the previous it?s drawing my eyes up, creating the illusion of more space? Or maybe I?m just lost in space, who knows?either way, I love it! My things are at a better level and, of course, I gained an extra drawer. Now I can stop over-stuffing drawers and lay my clothes neatly?at least until I go on another shopping spree.

As for the office, the new setup looks like this, ?music nook? and dressers on the inside wall, respectively:

Office music nookOffice with IKEA Malm dressers

This I really love! We have definitely lost some floor space in this scenario, but this just makes more sense to me. I think this wall was meant to have these dressers spanning the greater part of it. In addition to gaining 3 more drawers in this room, we have also gained some more surfaces. I can?t wait to spice this space up with a little more decor. We?ve got some great plans for the surface of the dressers, as well as the wall space above them. As of right now, we?re thinking of definitely adding a table runner across the width of the dressers. Then maybe some new framed artwork and some other decorative finds. For the wall, we?re definitely thinking of finding a cheap/old mirror to gussy up and eventually hang above, maybe with some other accents around?? We?re not quite sure yet, but we?re pretty excited about this new take on the office.

Stick with us as we make more DIY and design decisions in our Fresh Nest! Andrew?s got a great post coming up about a project he tackled recently. In the meantime, follow me on Pinterest to see what?s inspiring me lately AND ?Like? us on Facebook to see some ?behind the scenes? photos from our life.

    Researchers A-C-T On DNA Storage

    60-Second Science

Using a technique with multiple accuracy checks, researchers have stored large amounts of digital information on tiny volumes of synthetic DNA. Sophie Bushwick reports.

    More 60-Second Science

Scientists have used synthetic DNA to store digital files?including a photo, Shakespeare's sonnets and an audio recording of Martin Luther King. The work is published in the journal Nature. [Nick Goldman et al, Towards practical, high-capacity, low-maintenance information storage in synthesized DNA]

Unlike many forms of information storage, DNA is extremely long-lasting and does not require constant electrical power. Plus, it's tiny?a small cup of DNA can store one hundred million hours of high-quality video.

But until now, this storage method has faced too many obstacles: DNA synthesis is expensive and only works for short strings, and the decoding process creates lots of errors.

To avoid these problems, British researchers broke a long string of information into many overlapping short sequences, each tagged with its position in the overall sequence. American collaborators then synthesized short pieces of DNA to match the strings, and shipped the material overseas. Finally, researchers reconstructed the digital files with complete accuracy.

DNA storage is still very expensive. But the scientists predict advancing technology will lower prices and make their method cost-effective within a decade.

Facebook's Plan To Kill The Tracking Cookie - Business Insider

Facebook product manager David Baser gave a nice, detailed interview to AdExchanger in which he revealed that Facebook has a plan that, if successful, will make the infamous tracking cookie look like a second class relic of history.

Cookies are the little bits of code that advertisers drop onto web users' browsers in order to follow them around the web and target them with relevant ads. They don't identify users specifically, but they do identify your interests based on the sites you look at.

Facebook, however, is working on something much more targeted. Baser calls it "Optimized CPM." (Cost per thousand, or "mille," is a standard ad-pricing measurement.)

OCPM is so simple (in principle), it's brilliant. Facebook knows that users who log in mostly forget to log out, and thus they can be tracked around the web all day, especially if they interact with those "like" buttons that many non-Facebook web pages have installed (like the one on top of this page).

The difference between cookies and Facebook user IDs, Baser says, is that cookies are anonymous and don't really know who you are, whereas your Facebook user ID is actually you. Also, your Facebook ID follows you easily from your phone to your laptop and back. Cookies can't do that.

In plain English, it means that private, untracked web browsing will become a thing of the past for anyone who forgets to log out of Facebook.

By targeting ads at the user IDs, Facebook can find out which users are more likely to buy things than others. Those users can then be grouped together and targeted with ads. Those audiences have much greater conversion rates -- ie sales generated -- than with cookie targeting, Baser believes. This is called "Conversion Measurement," and when it's linked to OCPM, advertisers will come to regard the cookie as the poor cousin of web advertising, Baser hints.

It's important to note that advertisers won't know that they're targeting "you" specifically with ads. Just that facebook's algorithms have grouped your account into a pool with similar behavior that can be targeted. The system will be anonymous, in other words, even though it's based on your actual Facebook identity.

Here are the highlights from the Baser Q&A:

"The key difference is that other conversion measurement systems rely on dropping cookies on the users when they see or click on the ad. We understand who the user is regardless of whether they?re logged into Facebook on the app or on the mobile phone."

"Once we have this system based on user IDs and not based on cookies, we can use it to have consistent attribution across web, mobile and even multi-browser on the desktop."

"Right now our primary focus is on two things. One is getting the measurement system adopted as widely as possible, and two is providing high quality optimization based on measurement."
