5 car bombs kill 26 in Shiite areas across Iraq

BAGHDAD (AP) ? Five car bombs exploded Monday in public areas in predominantly Shiite cities and districts in central and southern Iraq, killing 26 civilians and wounding dozens, officials said.

The blasts come amid a week-long spike in sectarian violence following clashes at a Sunni protest camp in the north of the country. No one has claimed responsibility, but coordinated bombings in civilian areas are a favorite strategy used by al-Qaida in Iraq.

Two parked car bombs went off simultaneously Monday morning in the city of Amarah near a gathering of construction workers and a market, killing 13 civilians and wounding 42, according to police.

Another police officer said a parked car bomb exploded near a restaurant in the city of Diwaniyah, killing eight civilians and wounding 25 others.

Amarah, some 320 kilometers (200 miles) southeast of Baghdad and Diwaniyah, 30 kilometers (80 miles) south of the capital, are heavily Shiite and normally comparatively peaceful.

Hours later, another parked car bomb went off in the revered Shiite city of Karbala, killing two civilians and wounding 12 others, police said. Two early Islamic figures revered by Shiites are buried in the city, about 90 kilometers (55 miles) south of Baghdad.

A parked car bomb ripped through a Shiite neighborhood in the otherwise predominantly Sunni town of Mahmoudiya, about 20 miles (30 kilometers) south of Baghdad, killing three and wounding 16, another police said.

Four medical officials confirmed the casualty figures. All officials spoke on condition of anonymity as they were not authorized to release information.

Sectarian violence has spiked since Tuesday, when security forces tried to make arrests at a Sunni Muslim protest camp in the northern city of Hawija. The move set off a clash that killed 23 people, including three soldiers.

The Hawija incident and a spate of follow-up battles between gunmen and security forces as well as other attacks, including Monday's, have left around 200 dead in the last week.

Will green tea help you lose weight?

Apr. 29, 2013 ? Evidence has shown that green tea extract may be an effective herbal remedy useful for weight control and helping to regulate glucose in type 2 diabetes. In order to ascertain whether green tea truly has this potential, Jae-Hyung Park and his colleagues from the Keimyung University School of Medicine in the Republic of Korea conducted a study, now published in the Springer journal Naunyn-Schmedeberg's Archives of Pharmacology.

The active constituents of green tea, which have been shown to inhibit intestinal glucose and lipid uptake, are a certain type of flavonoid called gallated catechins. The authors had previously suggested that the amount of gallated catechins necessary to reduce blood glucose concentrations can be achieved from a daily dose of green tea. However, the amount of green tea needed to decrease lipid uptake from the gut is higher and has been shown to have adverse effects in humans. Once in the bloodstream, gallated catechins can actually increase insulin resistance, which is a negative consequence especially in obese and diabetic patients.

For their study, the researchers tested the effects of green tea extract on body weight and glucose intolerance in both diabetic mice and normal mice fed a high-fat diet. To prevent a high dose of gallated catechins from reaching the bloodstream, the authors also used a non-toxic resin, polyethylene glycol, to bind the gallated catechins in the gut to prevent their absorption. They then looked at the effects on the mice of eating green tea extract alone, and eating green tea extract plus polyethylene glycol. They compared these against the effects of two other therapeutic drugs routinely prescribed for type 2 diabetes.

Results showed that green tea extract in isolation did not give any improvements in body weight and glucose intolerance. However, when green tea extract was given with polyethylene glycol, there was a significant reduction in body weight gain, insulin resistance and glucose intolerance in both normal mice on a high fat diet and diabetic mice. The polyethylene glycol had the effect of prolonging the amount of time the gallated catechins remained in the intestines, thereby limiting glucose absorption for a longer period.

Interestingly, the effects of the green tea extract in both the intestines and in the circulation were measurable at doses which could be achieved by drinking green tea on a daily basis. In addition, the effects of green tea extract were comparable to those found when taking two of the drugs which are currently recommended for non-insulin dependent diabetes.

The authors conclude that "dietary green tea extract and polyethylene glycol alleviated body weight gain and insulin resistance in diabetic and high-fat mice, thus ameliorating glucose intolerance. Therefore the green tea extract and polyethylene glycol complex may be a preventative and therapeutic tool for obesity and obesity-related type 2 diabetes without too much concern about side effects."

Bookkeeping Nightmares? Check Out These Helpful Software ...

Bookkeeping tends to be one the more dreaded functions a business owner faces, though also a necessary evil. Keeping track of your finances is critically important for so many reasons.

Luckily for those who are not accounting savvy, there exists some incredibly helpful accounting and invoicing software to help you get through the bookkeeping process with relatively minimal pain. Here, we?ll recommend a few options that are top of the market and most intuitive for small to medium sized business use.

QuickBooks. QuickBooks is what many would consider to be the premier software for handling your accounting needs. Pay your bills, invoice your customers, manage and reconcile payroll, accept credit card payments, and run highly in-depth reports on the financial health of your business all from one clean interface.

Be sure to look for a version of QuickBooks that is relevant to your business, as there are numerous that exist. For example, QuickBooks has software specifically for manufacturing and for restaurants. There may be one that is available which pertains specifically to your own line of work.

QuickBooks also happens to be compatible with a lot of other software that you may use on a day to day basis, including CRM systems like Salesforce, payroll systems like ADP, and a host of other more industry-specific software.

Sage 50. Sage 50 is known to have a better inventory management setup than that of QuickBooks, as well as more robust reporting. Otherwise, most features are the same when it comes to cover things like bill pay, invoicing, and the basics of business accounting.

Like QuickBooks, Sage also has industry-specific software, including solutions for construction, distribution, manufacturing, and nonprofit industries. Sage 50 is best for companies under 50 employees, and has a free 30-day trial available. They also offer live chat for real-time customer service, which is a rare find and particularly useful during the setup process.

U.S. lawmakers press Obama to take action on Syria

By Jason Lange

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Republican senators on Sunday pressed U.S. President Barack Obama to intervene in Syria's civil war, saying America could attack Syrian air bases with missiles but should not send in ground troops.

Pressure is mounting on the White House to do more to help Syrian rebels fighting against the government of President Bashar al-Assad, which the Obama administration last week said had probably used chemical arms in the conflict.

Neutralizing the government forces' air advantage over the rebels "could turn the tide of battle pretty quickly," Republican Senator Lindsey Graham told CBS's "Face the Nation."

"One way you can stop the Syrian air force from flying is to bomb the Syrian air bases with cruise missiles," the South Carolina senator said.

Graham said international action was needed to bring the conflict to a close but "You don't need boots on the ground from the U.S. point of view."

More than 70,000 people have died in Syria's two-year-old civil war. So far, the United States has limited its involvement to providing non-lethal aid to rebels.

Obama said on Friday the use of chemical weapons in Syria would be a "game changer" for the United States, but made clear he was in no rush to intervene on the basis of evidence he said was still preliminary.

The U.S. fears anti-Assad Islamist rebels affiliated to al Qaeda could seize the chemical weapons, and Washington and its allies have discussed scenarios where tens of thousands of ground troops go into Syria if Assad's government falls.

INTERNATIONAL FORCE

Senator John McCain, the Republican presidential candidate in 2008, said the United States should step up its support for Syrian rebels even if it turns out that Assad's forces have not used poison gas in the conflict.

"We could use Patriot (missile) batteries and cruise missiles," the Arizona lawmaker, an influential voice on military issues in the U.S. Senate, told NBC's Meet The Press.

McCain said an "international force" should also be readied to go into Syria to secure stocks of chemical weapons.

"There are number of caches of these chemical weapons. They cannot fall into the hands of the jihadists," he said.

At the same time, McCain said it would be a mistake for American ground troops to enter Syria because that "would turn the people against us."

After fighting wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, sending U.S. troops into another conflict would be politically unpalatable in America.

The Pentagon is also wary of U.S. involvement in Syria. The president's top uniformed military adviser, General Martin Dempsey, said last month he could not see a U.S. military option with an "understandable outcome" there.

Syria in July acknowledged for the first time that it possessed chemical and biological weapons, saying they could be used if the country faced foreign intervention. However, Syria has denied any use of chemical arms in the civil war and has said it would not use them against its own citizens.

In abortion debate, both sides point to Philadelphia trial

(Editor's Note: Please be advised that this story contains graphic material that may upset some readers)

By Dave Warner

PHILADELPHIA (Reuters) - The Philadelphia abortion clinic that prosecutors called a "house of horrors" is now being cited as powerful evidence by both abortion and anti-abortion rights groups.

Advocates on both sides of the issue spoke out as the murder trial of Dr Kermit Gosnell, accused of killing a patient and four infants during late-term abortions at his clinic, headed for closing arguments on Monday in Common Pleas Court in Philadelphia.

Gosnell, 72, who ran the now-shuttered Women's Medical Society Clinic in urban West Philadelphia, could face the death penalty if convicted. The case focuses on whether or not the infants were born alive and then killed.

"Abortion is not safe, it never has been, and what happened in Kermit's clinic is not that unusual," said Joe Scheidler, national director of the Pro-Life Action League.

Rev. Frank Pavone, director of the anti-abortion group Priests for Life, said the often gory trial testimony "will change the conversation ... It'll help people engage and make them realize they're not just talking about a theoretical idea."

Abortion-rights activists said Gosnell is an outlier among predominantly safe and legal abortion providers.

"Gosnell ran a criminal enterprise, not a healthcare facility, and should be punished to the fullest extent of the law," said Eric Ferrero, a spokesman for the Planned Parenthood Federation of America.

Shoddy practices revealed in the Gosnell case are proof that safe abortions should be easily accessible to women of all income levels, said Ilyse Hogue, the president of NARAL Pro-Choice America.

"This is a peek into the back-alley days, the pre-Roe v. Wade days. It's what too many women experienced when we didn't provide access to safe and clean abortion services," Hogue said, referring to the landmark Supreme Court ruling in 1973 that struck down state laws restricting abortion.

The charges against Gosnell and nine of his employees have added fresh fuel to the debate in the United States about late-term abortions.

It is legal in Pennsylvania to abort a fetus up to 24 weeks of pregnancy. It becomes murder if the infant is fully expelled from the mother alive and then killed, according to a lawyer familiar with Pennsylvania law, who declined to be named given the volatility of the case.

Gosnell is charged with first-degree murder for delivering live babies during late-term abortions and then deliberately severing their spinal cords, prosecutors said. He is also charged with third-degree murder in the death of Karnamaya Mongar, 41, of Virginia, who died after the procedure from a drug overdose, prosecutors said.

The doctor has pleaded not guilty to all charges, contending there is no evidence the babies were alive when they were expelled and that Mongar failed to disclose her full medical history, which may have triggered drug complications.

Testimony in the six-week trial before a seven-woman, five-man jury has depicted a filthy, squalid clinic serving mostly low-income women in the largely black community.

Early in the trial, anti-abortion rights groups criticized the national media for largely ignoring the case.

Day Gardner, the head of the National Black Pro-life Union in Washington, tied the media's initial avoidance of the trial to what she said was deeply ingrained racism in American society, noting that many of Gosnell's patients were poor black women and the doctor himself is black.

The national spotlight would have shown brighter if the victim had been "a blonde, blue-eyed child ... It's very obvious that passion across America is not quite the same when it comes to black children," Gardner said.

Gosnell, who has been in jail since his January 2011 arrest, is being tried along with Eileen O'Neill, a medical graduate student accused of billing patients and insurance companies as if she had been a licensed doctor. Eight other defendants have pleaded guilty to a variety of charges and are awaiting sentencing.

McDonald's all-day breakfast? Many people would be lovin' it, but ...(+video)

McDonald's all-day breakfast: The possibility is in the news after CEO opens the door to fresh ideas in an interview. But he doesn't commit to widespread roll-out of all-day breakfast.

By Mark Trumbull,?Staff writer / April 27, 2013

A McDonald's restaurant in Del Mar, California. McDonald?s CEO Don Thompson says he'd consider all-day breakfast service.

Could be.

The question is getting some big buzz because McDonald?s CEO Don Thompson said he?s entertaining the idea.

And, well, when this mega restaurant chain is involved, it?s also because there are a lot of people out there who might like to order a McMuffin or a Sausage Burrito at noon or at dinner time.

But for those who might be salivating at the thought, don't hold your breath.

Mr. Thompson, the company?s chief executive officer, didn?t bring the topic up on his own. It came up when he was asked during a CNBC interview Friday:

?Yes we would consider it,? was his reply.

He followed up by saying the company needs to focus on making the most of its existing menu, that it offers all-day breakfast in some global markets, and that it?s looking into ?innovative? ways of expanding breakfast hours.

So all-day breakfast is on the company's radar. But it?s been that way for some years now.

Marketing blogger Joseph Yi, at RewardMe.com, recently explained why it might not be in McDonald?s best interest to make pancakes and other items available all day: ?The Law of Scarcity states that when a person perceives that something ... they want is in limited quantity [then] the value of the object will be greater than if it were to be abundant.?

Maybe McDonald's could sell more Egg McMuffins by offering them all day, Mr. Yi says. But in the process, it might lose some cachet as the go-to place in the realm of hot fast-food breakfasts. It would give customers less reason to visit a restaurant by 10:30 a.m. (or 11 a.m. in some places).

That doesn?t mean McDonald?s won?t make the all-day plunge. But it may explain why it hasn?t happened yet, and why Thompson didn?t answer the question with a simple ?yes? or ?I?m lovin? it.?

Thompson did say the company is trying to be faster on its feet regarding business opportunities.

The company reported a rise in earnings for the latest quarter, but weak revenue growth disappointed investors.

At the company?s innovation center near Chicago, Thompson said ?we socialize? ideas that are emerging from markets all around the world. Those include everything from menu options to delivery methods and how to use things like mobile apps and social media to connect with customers.

Globally, breakfast items are a big opportunity.

In a recent conference call with investment analysts, Thompson pledged to ?feature even more compelling new products in the United States especially in our four key growth categories of chicken, premium beef, breakfast and beverages.?

He cited breakfast item Egg White Delight, as well as premium McWraps and a Blue Berry Pomegranate Smoothie, as promising menu additions.

Thompson dropped another intriguing hint: He said offering home or workplace delivery is a "big, big opportunity."

Dickey: No terror tips should go unchecked

new today, they're focusing on the role their mother played. michael mccall today gave the strongest warn about her yet.

>> i think she played a very strong role in the radicalization process. i believe she is a person of interest, if not a subject. i do believe she comes into the united states that she will be detained for questioning. so i think there is a connection there.

>> joining mess is christopher dickey , the paris bureau chief and editor for theo -- i love this argue in which you describe the three key factors that lead to the development of -- the t.n.t. explain testosterone.

>> you know, most of the people who carry out terrorist acts are young men, who have lot a juice, a lot of testosterone, they are ambitious, anxious, they are full of all those characteristics that we associate maybe with a cliched sort of way, not necessarily biologically, but with the presence of a lot of tess toes torino. so we're usually talking about young men. it is second factor, you nay narrative.

>> i think narrative is the most important, rather than ideology or religion, because that demystifies it. what happens is they young men see themselves identifying with some greater cause, usually the cause of some oppressed people . it could be the catholics in northern ireland , it could be the tamals in sri lanka . in this case, they probably saw themselves identifying with the oppressed chechen people , the opressed iraqi people , the oppressed afghan people , even though they -- they see themselves almost like in knights in white armor . the key work of the ideology of al qaeda is a book called" knights under the prophet's banner" which is the whole idea of terrorism as chivalry. i think that's what you'll see almost universally with these guys.

>> what about the third factor? theater.

>> this is something that's always been a characteristic of terrorists, whether anarchists or islamists. it's become a huge problem in the last 30 years, when terrorists have seen they can carry out actions that will literally resonate around the world. they can do something obviously like 9/11, but even something like the boston marathon bombings, where three people are killed and scores injured, but it's not a huge disaster, yet it has resonance in every corner of the globe. that's the kind of theater they want. in fact, if you look at the history of al qaeda , you'll see that the leaders used to watch disaster movies all the time, because they loved that spectacle. in some ways 9/11 was an effort to replicate the hollywood's spectacle of destruction that they had seen in hollywood movies.

>>> there's a lot of talk, christopher, about boston being an intelligence failure . law enforcement was tipped off. but can anything really be stopped to stop all terrorist attacks , or is it just a matter of reduction?

>> well, it is a matter of reduction. i mean, you can keep pushing and keep pushing, you can use intelligence, which really is the most important thing and you have to be careful how to use it. you don't want to be too invasive, but you can't let a tip just sort of drift by the wayside and say these guys are not a priority. but the most important thing is resilience, is building up the nation's ability to weather the kind of storm we saw in boston . i think boston itself is a great example, the way people have come back quickly from that tragedy, and i think the way the american people have come back from the boston tragedy. that's where i defeat the terrorists. if you look at britain during the height of the i.r.a. bombing campaign, horrible things would happen in the center of london, and the british would just carry on. i think ultimately that's the way you defeat the terrorists, because they don't get the resonance that they want from the actions that they carry out.

>> christopher dickey , thank you

Controllers to return; flight delays sway Congress

(AP) ? Furloughed air traffic controllers will soon be heading back to work, ending a week of coast-to-coast flight delays that left thousands of travelers frustrated and furious.

Unable to ignore the travelers' anger, Congress overwhelmingly approved legislation Friday to allow the Federal Aviation Administration to withdraw the furloughs. The vote underscored a shift by Democrats who had insisted on erasing all of this year's $85 billion in across-the-board budget cuts, not just the most publicly painful ones, for fear of losing leverage to restore money for Head Start and other programs with less lobbying clout and popular support.

With President Barack Obama's promised signature, the measure will erase one of the most stinging and publicly visible consequences of the budget-wide cuts known as the sequester.

Friday's House approval was 361-41 and followed the previous evening's passage by the Senate, which didn't even bother with a roll call. Lawmakers then streamed toward the exits ? and airports ? for a weeklong spring recess.

White House spokesman Jay Carney said Obama would sign the bill, but Carney complained that the measure left the rest of the sequester intact.

"This is a Band-Aid solution. It does not solve the bigger problem," he said. Using the same Band-Aid comparison, Rep. Rick Larsen, D-Wash., said that "the sequester needs triple bypass surgery."

The FAA and Transportation Department did not respond to repeated questions about when the controllers' furloughs would end. Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, who helped craft the measure, was told by Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood Friday that the agency is "doing everything they can to get things back on track as quickly as possible," said Collins spokesman Kevin Kelley.

In the week since the furloughs began, news accounts have prominently featured nightmarish tales of delayed flights and stranded air passengers. Republicans have used the situation to accuse the Obama administration of purposely forcing the controllers to take unpaid days off to dial up public pressure on Congress to roll back the sequester.

"The president has an obligation to implement these cuts in a way that respects the American people, rather than using them for political leverage," House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, said in a written statement.

"Unfortunately for this administration, the term 'sequester' has become synonymous with fear," Rep. Richard Hudson, R-N.C., said during the debate.

Halting the furloughs was the latest example of lawmakers easing parts of the sequester that became too painful.

They previously used a separate, wide-ranging spending bill to provide more money for meat and poultry inspectors. Attorney General Eric Holder cited extra funds in that same bill as the reason the Justice Department would be able to avoid furloughs. Transportation Security Administration employees also have gotten relief.

The Obama administration and congressional Democrats ? backed by many fiscal experts ? say the sequester law gives agencies little maneuverability, requiring them to spread cuts evenly among most budget accounts. The Federal Aviation Administration was achieving about a third of its required $637 million in cuts by furloughing nearly all its workers ? including the 15,000 air traffic controllers ? one day every two weeks.

Obama and his Democratic allies want to roll back the entire sequester, with the White House proposing a substitute mix of spending cuts and tax increases that Republicans have rejected. The GOP has proposed replacing the across-the-board spending cuts with others, many of them aimed at programs Democrats defend.

That has left many Democrats reluctant to ease across-the-board cuts for individual programs that cause a public outcry because they worry that would relieve pressure on Republicans to undo the entire sequester.

"While there is a little bit of leverage and pressure, let's broaden it to the sequester as a whole," Rep. Tim Walz, D-Minn., told reporters before voting against the bill.

Said House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif.: "How can we sit there and say, 'Four million Meals on Wheels for seniors gone? But that's not important. Over 70,000 children off Head Start. But that's not important.' What is important is for Republicans to hold a hard line" on budget cuts.

Even so, the complaints about flying delays became too intense, and in the end only 29 Democrats and 12 Republicans voted against the measure Friday in the House. The FAA said there had been at least 863 flights delayed on Wednesday attributed to the furloughs, with hundreds of others daily since the furloughs began last Sunday.

The bill would let the FAA use up to $253 million from an airport improvement program and other accounts to halt the furloughs through the Sept. 30 end of the government's fiscal year. The money can be used for other FAA operations, too, including keeping open small airport towers around the country that the agency said it would shut to satisfy the spending cuts.

But Democrats were bitter Friday that cuts in many federal programs remain. Besides the Head Start pre-school program, they complained about ongoing cuts for health research, feeding programs for poor women, children and the elderly and jobless benefits for the long-term unemployed and about furloughs of civilian Pentagon workers.

"Let's get a big deal. Let's deal with all the adverse consequences of the sequester," said No. 2 House Democrat Steny Hoyer, whose Maryland district has many civil servants and who voted no.

Congressional approval was hailed by groups representing the airline industry and the union representing controllers.

"The winners here are the customers who will be spared from lengthy and needless delays," said Nicholas E. Calio, president of Airlines for America, representing major carriers.

The National Air Traffic Controllers Association said the week of problems showed that a "fully staffed air traffic control workforce is necessary for our national airspace system to operate at full capacity."

Miss. man arrested in ricin letters case

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) ? A Mississippi man whose home and business were searched as part of an investigation into poisoned letters sent to the president and others has been arrested in the case, according to the FBI.

Everett Dutschke, 41, was arrested about 12:50 a.m. Saturday at his Tupelo home by FBI special agents in connection with the letters, FBI spokeswoman Deborah Madden said. The letters, which tests showed were tainted with ricin, were sent last week to President Barack Obama, Sen. Roger Wicker of Mississippi and earlier to an 80-year-old Mississippi judge, Sadie Holland.

Madden said FBI special agents arrested Dutschke (pronounced DUHS'-kee) without incident. She said additional questions should be directed to the U.S. attorney's office. The office in Oxford did not immediately respond to messages Saturday.

Dutschke's attorney, Lori Nail Basham, said Saturday in a text message that "the authorities have confirmed Mr. Dutschke's arrest. We have no comment at this time." Basham also said via text that she didn't know what the charges against Dutschke were.

Basham said earlier this week that Dutschke was "cooperating fully" with investigators. Dutschke has insisted he had nothing to do with the letters.

Ryan Taylor, a spokesman for Wicker, said Saturday that "because the investigation is still ongoing, we're not able to comment."

Charges in the case were initially filed against an Elvis impersonator but then dropped. Attention then turned to Dutschke, who has ties to the former suspect, the judge and the senator. Earlier in the week, as investigators searched his primary residence in Tupelo, Dutschke had remarked to reporters, "I don't know how much more of this I can take."

Charges initially were filed last week against Paul Kevin Curtis, 45, the Elvis impersonator, but then dropped after authorities said they had discovered new information. Curtis' lawyers say he was framed.

Curtis' attorney, Christi McCoy, said Saturday: "We are relieved but also saddened. This crime is nothing short of diabolical. I have seen a lot of meanness in the past two decades, but this stops me in my tracks. "

Dutschke and Curtis were acquainted. Curtis said they had talked about possibly publishing a book on an alleged conspiracy to sell body parts on a black market. But he said they later had a feud.

Judge Holland is a common link between the two men who have been investigated, and both know Wicker.

Holland was the presiding judge in a case in which Curtis was accused of assaulting a Tupelo attorney in 2004. Holland sentenced him to six months in the county jail. He served only part of the sentence, according to his brother.

Holland's family has had political skirmishes with Dutschke. Her son, Steve Holland, a Democratic state representative, said he thinks his mother's only other encounter with Dutschke was at a rally in the town of Verona in 2007, when Dutschke ran as a Republican against Steve Holland

Holland said his mother confronted Dutschke after he made a derogatory speech about the Holland family. She demanded that he apologize, which Holland says he did.

On Saturday, Steve Holland said he can't say for certain that Dutschke is the person who sent the letter to his mother but added, "I feel confident the FBI knows what they are doing."

"We're ready for this long nightmare to be over," Holland told The Associated Press.

He said he's not sure why someone would target his mother. Holland said he believes Dutschke would have more reason to target him than his mother.

"Maybe he thinks the best way to get to me is to get to the love of my life, which is my mother," Holland said Saturday.

Review: Worst Kept Secret Fest II ? ColumbusUnderground.com

Last Saturday, musicians from all around Columbus scrambled as they poured their gear into the Dude Locker in preparation for one of Columbus? greatest DIY (and free) shows, The Worst Kept Secret Festival. A beautiful mash up of Columbus? local artists and underground rock scene, WKSF held its sophomore event with 16 bands and a handful of artists running from 4:20 pm to 1 am. They proudly and promptly delivered the music exactly at 4:20pm, just as they had promised. The show started off with a bang and never lost it?s momentum as punks and hipsters alike took their places in front of the stage with two-dollar beers in hand.

We sat down with the Coordinators of the event, Tim Sistrunk and Geoff Spall (with special appearance by Mike Folker, Owner of Secret Song records) to discuss the story behind Worst Kept Secret Fest.

Logan Miller: So to get things started, can you tell me a little about yourselves?

Tim Sistrunk: I?m Tim Sistrunk, and I co-founded the event with Geoff Spall. Around August last year we started organizing for Worst Kept Secret Fest and things fell into place by October 5th. I work for a small company in Columbus, and I don?t play any music or make any art, but I am a music enthusiast. I love this scene and the community, so everything we?ve been doing is in the name of the music and art community.

Geoff Spall: I?m Geoff Spall and I?m a college grad that plays in several bands. I co-founded WKSF with Tim last August so we could start a festival that illuminates the underground scene. We wanted to throw a free show, so this was our idea.

LM: For the people who have no idea, what is Worst Kept Secret Fest all about?

GS: For me, Worst Kept Secret Fest is about uniting bands and artists to share an audience. It?s an easier audience with free admission, and it?s mainly about being a DIY collaboration with integrity. We just want to be able to share music with as many people as possible, so we want this to be the biggest show that these bands have played. The bands we usually book are the ones who are up and coming in the underground scene. This is all about promoting a new generation of bands and artists.

TS: Crowd-sourcing and share-sourcing are things we?re very into. We?ve pulled together resources from about 60 individual artists, band members and public community enthusiasts. We?re trying to promote a ?use it, share it? type of environment with integrity and a strong work ethic to help us maintain something different.

LM: Can you share a bit about your experience coordinating such an awesome event?

TS: For me it?s been a good way to get to a lot of new people to get to know the scene. Before Worst Kept Secret Fest I last October, felt like a bystander and now I feel like an intricate part of this machine. It?s thrilling! It?s also stressful and there?s a little anxiety riding sometimes, but it?s amazing to see people come together like this.

GS: To me the most important part about this is practicing my own skills and helping other people have a platform to practice their skills. We want people to have a place where other open-minded people accept their work and help them thrive. That?s the kind of environment we want here.

Mike Folker: I?m going to chime in on this too. One of the issues with the Columbus scene is that it?s a clique scene. People in those cliques get really excited, and they do really well inside their own clique, but they?re not really comfortable outside out it. The nice thing about a show like this is that we?re reaching out to different groups and saying ?Hey! Do you wanna grow your fan base? Do you wanna get beyond the 60 people who are coming out to see you every week?? We want to make the scene more like the way Columbus was in the 80?s and 90?s when people were going out and seeing bands all the time. It?s very cool for us to do this show, but we think more events like this are going to grow the sphere of the scene.

You can see sponsors and the set list for WKSF II at www.facebook.com/WKSFest and be sure to check out WKSF III on July 20th at the Dude Locker.

Politics, Priorities, Psychology and Hope WITHIN The Black ...

Dear THE BLACK (Progressive) Agenda Is Safe - Right Through These Doors

Dr Boyce Says: (5:25 mark)

  1. Fight For Our Right To Have .......................A Good Education?
  2. Fight For Our Right To Have........................A Job?
  3. Fight For Our Right To ...............................Get Out Of Prison?

Sir - I do not consider you "ignorant and manipulative" like most of the "Embedded Black Fox Confidence Men" - but you are no less complicit.

WHY ARE YOU SURPRISED that the "Embedded Confidence Men" told "The Blacks" that THEIR VOTES ARE GOING TO BE STOLEN - during the run up to the "Presidential Election Of 2012" - only to go back into "Obama Promotion Mode" today?

WHERE WERE YOU?????..........................Telling The Masses Of Negroes That THE BLACK ATTORNEY GENERAL WOULD NEVER ALLOW Their Vote To Be Stolen? ?AND IF They Were Fearful That A POLICE MAN, STANDING IN FRONT OF THE POLLING PLACE Then They Probably Beat The Hell Out Of Some Member Of The Black Community - AND THE BLACK COMMUNITY DOESN'T NEED THEIR VOTE - Only THE DEMOCRATS AND PROGRESSIVE FUNDAMENTALISTS DO?

  1. How Do You VOTE FOR YOUR SALVATION And Get A GOOD EDUCATION - Unless There Is A Dependency On SOME EXTERNAL FORCE OUTSIDE OF YOUR COMMUNITY?
  2. How Do You VOTE FOR THE PRESIDENT OF THE NATION With The Hopes For A JOB That Is Near Your Community - Unless SOME ECONOMIC PRINCIPLE Of "Value Add" / "Supply And Demand" Is Molested? ?Does VOTING INCREASE THE MARKET VALUE That You Have To Offer Someone To EXCHANGE YOUR COMPETENCIES In Exchange For A SALARY - OR, Dr Watkins Are You Telling Us That THE NATION Should VALUE THE LABORER - By Spiking His SALARY Using $17 TRILLION DEBT MONEY? ?
  3. Of Those "Mass Incarcerated" That You Speak Of - Arrested By OUT OF DATE LAWS - How Many Of The FAVORABLE LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICIALS That The Black Community Has VOTED FOR With Pride - KEEP ARRESTING NEGROES Under These Same Statutes? ?IF OBAMA Can IGNORE THE "DEFENSE OF MARRIAGE ACT" BECAUSE HE SAYS THAT IT IS UNCONSTITUTIONAL - HOW MANY NEGROES HAVE TOLD THE LOCAL DA, POLICE CHIEF, Judge OR SHERIFF That The Voted For To NOT "MASS INCARCERATE ANY MORE YOUNG NEGROES" - Lest They Feel The WRATH Of The CONGREGATION?

WHY DIDN'T YOU STOP THE "CONFIDENCE SCHEME" IN 2012 WHEN IT COUNTED?

WHAT DID DR BOYCE WATKINS EXPECT AS THE "OPERATIONALZATION OF THE BLACK AGENDA" THAT WAS FRAUDULENT IN THE FIRST PLACE?

December 2012 - Yes I remember. ? "The Black Progressive Thought Leadership" went to Washington DC and did a number upon the "Black Community Development Consciousness" that as MORE DESTRUCTIVE than the "White Republicans in January 2009" went to the same restaurant to plot to make Obama a ONE TERM PRESIDENT.

The Republicans succeeded in RILING UP "THE BLACKS" - keeping them on the defensive, to ensure that they FAILED at their "racist scheme".
In the mean time:

  • Africa was bombed by the US Government - but the Negro needed to be silent lest the Right Wing win
  • The American Negro - after 50 years of investments of his valuables in the scheme voiced by Bayard Rustin but expertly executed by Dr Ronald Daniels - STILL suffered from unemployment that was double that of his "Perfect 1.0 White Reference".
  • For the first time in American history - the US COMMANDER IN CHIEF was said to be a VICTIM OF RACISM - this despite the fact that he had full faith and confidence of the OFFICE -to impose any US Foreign Policy, Military, Or Economic Sanction upon ANY OTHER NATION - in the name of the United States - AND NOT GET ARRESTED for doing so

This so called "Black Leadership" convinced the "Americanized Negro" to fuse their BLACK COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT CONSCIOUSNESS into the Oval Office.

Dear Sir - that "Quality Black Education" that you have vacated the local institutions and now look toward the White House to provide to you......................................

HERE IS YOUR QUALITY BLACK EDUCATION - THE "PROTECTORS OF BLACKNESS ARE HAPPY AND APPEASED" ...................................NOW YOU GET IT INSTANTIATED WITHIN THE BLACK COMMUNITY!!!!

He Became A Scholar By LOOKING INTO THE FAVORABLE PRESIDENT'S EYES

THE ANSWER TO YOUR CHALLENGE - DR BOYCE

EITHER you use your inside contacts to schedule every single Black male represented in this latest report with an individual session to TOUCH OBAMA'S HEAD and thus become A-STUDENTS...........................

OR YOU WORK TO PUT A STOP TO THIS FOOLISHNESS - DISALLOWING the "BLACK COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT CONSCIOUSNESS" to be STOLEN INTO POLITICS - USING THE NEGRO BY TAKING HIS VALUABLES!!!!

LIMIT what "The Negro" EXPECTS to be addressed through VOTING and INSTEAD BE HONEST by telling him WHAT HE MUST DO MORE LOCALLY lest his pockets continue to get picked!!

Scientists provide 'new spin' on emerging quantum technologies

Apr. 23, 2013 ? An international team of scientists has shed new light on a fundamental area of physics which could have important implications for future electronic devices and the transfer of information at the quantum level.

The electrical currents currently used to power electronic devices are generated by a flow of charges. However, emerging quantum technologies such as spin-electronics, make use of both charge and another intrinsic property of electrons ? their spin ? to transfer and process signals and information.??

The experimental and theoretical work, carried out by researchers from York?s Department of Physics, the Institute of Nanoscience in Paris and the University of Missouri-Columbia, USA, could have important implications for spintronics and quantum information technologies.

The team looked at semiconductors? structures ? the base of current electronic devices and of many spintronic device proposals - and the problems created by internal fields known as spin-orbit fields. In general, these tend to act differently on each electronic spin, causing a phenomenon referred to as ?spin-decoherence?. This means that the electronic spins will behave in a way which cannot be completely controlled or predicted, which has important implications for device functionalities.

To address this problem, the scientists looked at semiconductor structures called ?quantum wells? where the spins can be excited in a collective, coherent way by using lasers and light scattering. ?????

They demonstrated that these collective spin excitations possess a macroscopic spin of quantum nature. In other words, the electrons and their spins act as a single entity making them less susceptible to spin orbit fields, so decoherence is highly suppressed.

The theoretical work was led by Dr Irene D?Amico from York?s Department of Physics, and Carsten Ullrich, an Associate Professor from Missouri-Columbia?s Department of Physics. The project began with their prediction about the effect of spin Coulomb drag on collective spin excitations, and developed into a much larger international project spanning over three years, which was funded in the UK by a Royal Society grant, with additional funding from the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC).

Dr D?Amico said: ?This work has developed into a strong international collaboration which has greatly improved our understanding at fundamental level of the role of many-body interactions on the behaviour of electron spins.

?By combining experimental and theoretical work, we were able to demonstrate that through many-body interactions, a macroscopic collection of spins can behave as a single entity with a single macroscopic quantum spin, making this much less susceptible to decoherence. In the future, it may be possible to use these excitations as signals to transport or elaborate information at the quantum level.?

After reporting their results in the journal Physical Review Letters last year, the team of scientists confirmed and extended the results by considering different materials and type of excitation. The second set of experiments, were recently reported in Physical Review B (Rapid Communication) and highlighted by the Journal as an ?Editor?s Suggestion?.

Dr Florent Perez, who led the experimental work with Florent Baboux, at the CNRS/Universit? Paris VI, says the results strongly suggest that the quantum nature of the macroscopic spin is universal to collective spin excitations in conductive systems.

He said: ?The collaboration with Irene D?Amico and Carsten Ullrich has been particularly powerful to disentangle the puzzle of our data. In our first joint work we constructed an interpretation of the phenomenon which was confirmed in a second investigation carried out on a different system. This paved the way for a universality of the effect.?

Relying on technology: Financial planning is an art, not a science

April 23rd, 2013?

Article by John Olsen

Article added by John Olsen on April 22, 2013

The biggest problem with the incredibly powerful tools we employ, in my judgment, is that they have allowed us to form an intimate relationship with our client?s data, when what we need to do is form an intimate relationship with our clients.
Financial planning is an art, not a science, but you sure couldn?t tell that from the tools we use. Since the dawn of the computer age, planners have been employing increasingly more sophisticated instruments to ply our craft. As computers become more powerful and complex, so has the software ? to the point where today?s planner has easy access to a staggering assortment of incredibly powerful financial planning programs. Practitioners, both veterans and neophytes, can summon forth ?efficient? portfolios using mean-variance? optimization, do ?Monte Carlo simulations,? and conjure ?what if? scenarios with the click of a mouse button.
Computer technology has become the driving force in the practice of financial planning, to the point where many of us, perhaps even all of us, have been seduced by the dark side of that force. We?ve come to accept, almost as an article of faith, that the results of all this technological wizardry ? the numbers spewed out by our software ? are both relevant and correct. We do this because we?re either unable or unwilling to check those results.
In part, this is the fault of program developers who have, by design or otherwise, built software which is opaque (?black boxes? that don?t permit users to examine the assumptions and choices that drive their engines). But mostly, it?s our own fault. Even when we can look under the hood, we usually don?t. And why is this? Are we too stupid to do so? I don?t think so. Most financial planners are more than? ordinarily bright. Are we too lazy? Well, that?s true to some extent, but I believe that the main reason why we don?t scrutinize how our? software tools do what they do is that, like our clients, we?re simply awed by the darned things. They?re so incredibly strong, they handle so much detail and produce results with such precision that we?re predisposed to believe that those results must be right.
And it?s that precision, I think, which has lulled us into such acceptance. Working with numbers as we do, we planners believe on a gut level that precision is preferable to imprecision, that 7.45 percent is a better number than ?roughly seven and a half? percent.? The problem with that notion is that we?re confusing precision with accuracy. A number can be both precise and dead? wrong. Moreover, precise is not necessarily good. If ?truth conditions? are not known to a high degree of confidence, and if we can do no more than estimate a value, then doing so to three decimal places isn?t good; it?s bad, because it?s misleading.? It implies that we know more than we do.? Where this mistaken confidence becomes downright dangerous is when we accept, at face value, the numbers disgorged from a financial? planning software program and do not (or cannot) view them in the light of how much confidence they deserve. If, for example, our planning software asks us to enter, for a non-qualified investment holding, a percentage return for income and another for growth,? and assumes that the former will be ordinary income realized each year and the latter will be capital gain realized only when the position is liquidated, then the projected future value of that investment will be hugely wrong, even if our estimates for both types of return turn out to be dead right. This is because that?s not how distributions occur or are taxed.
We can improve the reliability of our projection somewhat by ?fudging? our inputs, but not unless we are aware that the program will? otherwise assume that all capital gains in that investment will be tax-deferred until liquidation. z`
We have to know what the program is doing in order to reduce the impact of? what it?s doing wrong.
But even if our software were to model everything with complete accuracy (as if that were possible), and even if all our guesses? were right, we?d still ? most of us, anyway ? have a problem. We?re still seduced by the dark side of that technological force. Because financial planning, for the most part, isn?t about the numbers ? however ?accurate? they might be.
Financial planning, in my opinion, is 90 percent emotional. Only about 10 percent is about the numbers. When we model future cash flows, we?re dealing with whether our clients will be able to live the lives they want to live. A hypothetical probate in an estate plan isn?t so much about transfer costs as it is about the legacy our clients will leave to those they love. And neither is simply a matter of numbers.
The biggest problem with the incredibly powerful tools we employ, in my judgment, is that they have allowed us to form an intimate relationship with our client?s data, when what we need to do is form an intimate relationship with our clients.
