Minister of Education, Priya Manickchand, has urged the 137 graduates of the recent 20th Graduation exercise of the Roadside Baptist Skills Training Centre (RBSTC) of Number 68 Village, Corentyne, to use their newly-acquired skills to contribute better to society.
?Your lives will be better due to the work you have done here,? she said. Manickchand also bemoaned the?fact that many children are dropping out of school. She saw the school as ?a system which does not adequately support children whose parents cannot work to keep them in school.

?We have those problems to address and that is why we need to find solutions together?the government organizations and faith- based organizations, political parties and most importantly, the people of Guyana.
Head of the Adult Education Association (AEA) in Guyana congratulated them for the ?firm and positive stand that you have taken to improve yourselves and implore you to move forward in whatever area of specialization you desire.?
Seventy-seven persons successfully completed training in Information Technology; six in Computer Literacy; 11 in Catering, Cake Decoration & Garment Construction; 43 in Gender Based Violence (GBV) & HIV/AIDS prevention; 12 have been successful at the 2012 CXC English & Mathematics examination; 12 among the teenaged IT graduands are also trained in GBV and HIV/AIDS prevention.
Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of RBSTC, Mrs. Yetrawattie Katryan, praised the organization for delivering more than 3,600 persons to the workforce and towards empowerment in Guyana over the past 18 years of the Centre?s existence, ?trained in various income generating, entrepreneurial and other essential skills to prepare them for an improved quality of life?.
She touted the organization?s rigid after-school classes as well as its Income Generating Skill Training ? Cake Decoration, Catering and Garment Construction classes for single parents and those who are vulnerable in society. Additionally, there is the remedial programme for school drop- outs, library service, counseling, literacy classes for adults and children, etc.
RBSTC also collaborates with the Board of Industrial Training, resulting in 26 single female parents with school aged children having an income generating skill ? Garment Construction, Catering and Cosmetology.
The Gender-based Violence and HIV/AIDS Prevention ? GBV & HIV/AIDS Prevention, programmes receive over US$6M funding over a period of ten months, she stated, from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and Community Support and Development Services ? CSDS.
?The seniors? programme launched in 1994 is still very active.?? Monthly ongoing group meetings are held on the third Tuesday of every month. The seniors enjoy a hot, nutritious meal prepared and served with the help of the seniors themselves, benefit from take home packages with basically hygiene items,?educational, interactive sessions?and fun enrichment activities,? she added.
Also, a service is provided for abused/disadvantaged women and children, perpetrators and family members. Clients are at times taken to the hospital. The East Berbice Life Savers Club and The Berbice Male Action Network, two arms of Roadside made up of trained personnel, are of great assistance in the areas of awareness and interventions in cases of? Domestic Violence,? Suicide Prevention, HIV/AIDS, Substance and other forms of abuse.
Also giving good words to the graduates were Region Six Chairman, Mr. David Armogan; Deputy Chief of Mission of the U.S. Embassy, Mr. Thomas Pierce; Ms. Patricia Sherrattan Bisnauth, wife of former? Minister of Education(late) Dr Dale Bisnauth who opened the centre 18 years ago in Berbice,; Region Six Education Officer, Ms. Shafiran Bhajan; Population, Health & Nutrition Officer- USAID/Guyana Unit, Dr. Oleksander? Cherkas;? Chief Probation Officer ? Ministry of Human & Social Services, Mr. Gavin Munroe ; and Head of the Research Unit ? Ministry of Home Affairs, Mr. Clement Henry.
