Penn State Coach Bill O'Brien meets with trustees on NCAA sanctions, according to report

LEMONT FURNACE - Penn State football coach Bill O?Brien met with the university?s board of trustees today in a session that seemed to be an update on the NCAA sanctions against the university's football program.

The closed-door session, first reported by the Centre Daily Times of State College, also appeared to leave the door to a possible pitch by Penn State to the NCAA for a modification of the penalties that include bowl bans and scholarship reductions.

A link to the CDT?s report is here.

The NCAA imposed the sanctions against Penn State last summer, after the Freeh Report commissioned by trustees found that an ingrained ?reverence? for the football program likely contributed to the Jerry Sandusky child sex abuse scandal.

Penn State has received excellent marks from outside observers for compliance with all NCAA requirements through the first year of the sanctions program.

But the sanctions have received major pushback from a number of other sources, including separate lawsuits seeking to void the punishments by Gov. Tom Corbett and late head coach Joe Paterno?s survivors.

The Corbett suit was dismissed earlier this spring. The Paterno suit, which also includes five trustees members and several former players, is still pending in Centre County Court.

The trustees will hold their mid-summer meeting here this afternoon, but it is unlikely that the O?Brien discussion will come up in the public session.
